Hu-Tucker Alogorithm For Building Optimal Alphabetic Binary Search Trees, Sashka Davis Jan 1998

Hu-Tucker Alogorithm For Building Optimal Alphabetic Binary Search Trees, Sashka Davis

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to study the behavior of the Hu- Tucker algorithm for building Optimal Alphabetic Binary Search Trees (OABST), to design an efficient implementation, and to evaluate the performance of the algorithm, and the implementation. The three phases of the algorithm are described and their time complexities evaluated. Two separate implementations for the most expensive phase, Combination, are presented achieving 0(n2) and O(nlogn) time and 0(n) space complexity. The break even point between them is experimentally established and the complexities of the implementations are compared against their theoretical time complexities. The electronic version of "The Complete …

Fencing Cyberspace: Drawing Borders In A Virtual World, Maureen A. O'Rourke Jan 1998

Fencing Cyberspace: Drawing Borders In A Virtual World, Maureen A. O'Rourke

Faculty Scholarship

In the last few years, the Internet has increasingly become a source of information even for the historically computer illiterate. The growing popularity of the Internet has been driven in large part by the World Wide Web (web). The web is a system that facilitates use of the Internet by helping users sort through the great mass of information available on it. The web uses software that allows one document to link to and access another, and so on, despite the fact that the documents may reside on different machines in physically remote locations. The dispersion of data that is …

Defending The Middle Way: Intermediate Scrutiny As Judicial Minimalism, Jay D. Wexler Jan 1998

Defending The Middle Way: Intermediate Scrutiny As Judicial Minimalism, Jay D. Wexler

Faculty Scholarship

In the last few years, Court-watchers have been particularly busy critiquing the constitutional decisions of the splintered Rehnquist Court. Two of the recurring critiques have posited that the Justices are overly activist and that their opinions are needlessly confusing. American Lawyer's Stuart Taylor, for example, has decried both the "jurisprudential mess" of the Court's recent redistricting decisions' as well as the disturbing activism that Taylor believes marks each of the Equal Protection decisions of the 1995-96 Terman activism that has led him to wonder "whether there is any life at all left in the idea of judicial restraint."' Eva Rodriguez …

Experimental Study Of Performance Of Minimum Spanning Tree Algorithms, Alec Berenbaum Jan 1998

Experimental Study Of Performance Of Minimum Spanning Tree Algorithms, Alec Berenbaum

Theses

Throughout the study of various theories of algorithms much work has been done in the area of traversal and solving optimization problems on graphs. Some of this work includes studies of finding the Minimal-Cost Spanning Trees (MST) in directed and undirected connected graphs. Several algorithms have been developed for such task. These algorithms tend to differ in performance based on various factors, such as graph density, size of problem spaces, range of weights that can be assigned to the edges of the graphs, edge weight distributions, etc. The data structures used by an algorithm can have a significant impact on …

Development Of A Test Method To Determine The Relative Barrier Performance Of Polymeric Films To Flavor Loss Of Methyl Salicylate, Russell Wright Jan 1998

Development Of A Test Method To Determine The Relative Barrier Performance Of Polymeric Films To Flavor Loss Of Methyl Salicylate, Russell Wright

Theses

The increased use of polymer films to package a wide range of flavor compounds in various products creates a problem in trying to recommend appropriate materials. There is a need to identify tools that enable the engineer to simplify the selection process through ranking the relative adsorption of such compounds with different polymer films. The study of one such compound, Methyl Salicylate, was conducted for polymer films representing commodity and engineering barrier films. The films tested were Polypropylene, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Polyethylene Napthalate, Aclar, and Liquid Crystal Polymer. The testing was conducted with a Thermogravimetric Analyzer to determine the relative amount …

A Graphical Petri Nets Simulator, Shye-Chyun Huang Jan 1998

A Graphical Petri Nets Simulator, Shye-Chyun Huang

Theses

This thesis is an application software system (Graphical Petri Net simulator GPNS) providing a window-oriented, menu-driven and graphical interface simulator for Petri nets. This simulator is based on Place/Transition nets (PT-nets). It allows users to design and simulate PT-net under an interactive graphical environment. GPNS also provides a utility, Auxiliary Application Program (AAP), to make it more useful. When applying the AAP with the GPNS, each function in the AAP can be attached to a corresponding transition in the Petri net. Whenever an enabled transition in the Petri Net is fired will cause the corresponding function in the AAP to …

A National Bill Of Patients' Rights, George J. Annas Jan 1998

A National Bill Of Patients' Rights, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

In one of the most enthusiastically received proposals in his January State of the Union address, President Bill Clinton called on Congress to enact a national bill of rights in health care. The President said, “You have the right to know all your medical options, not just the cheapest. You have the right to choose the doctor you want for the care you need. You have the right to emergency room care, wherever and whenever you need it. You have the right to keep your medical records confidential.”

On Commodifying Intangibles, Wendy J. Gordon, Sam Postbrief Jan 1998

On Commodifying Intangibles, Wendy J. Gordon, Sam Postbrief

Faculty Scholarship

It was made clear long ago that property and value are different things. Value exists. It is a fact. It can arise from law, and much of law aims at creating more value in the world. But value can also arise in spite of law (consider, for example, the fortunes that bootleggers made during the Roaring Twenties), or in law's interstices. When a particular value arises despite a lack of explicit legal protection, its possessors often ask courts or legislatures to give them a legal entitlement to preserve and further exploit that value. Typically the holders demand (1) a liberty …

Autopoiesis And The "Relative Autonomy" Of Law, Hugh Baxter Jan 1998

Autopoiesis And The "Relative Autonomy" Of Law, Hugh Baxter

Faculty Scholarship

Recent accounts of the relation between law and other social spheres have emphasized law's "relative autonomy." The intuition behind the "relative autonomy" formula is that law is neither wholly independent of, nor entirely reducible to, political, economic and other social processes. Sensible as this intuition is, however, the idea of "relative autonomy" by itself remains purely negative. It excludes two unpalatable extremes – pure formalism and pure instrumentalism – but it does not by itself characterize, in positive theoretical terms, the relation between law and other social discourses or practices.

This Article examines an attempt in recent German social thought …

Short Changing Short-Term Risk: A Study Of Superfund Remedy Selection, John S. Applegate, Steven M. Wesloh Jan 1998

Short Changing Short-Term Risk: A Study Of Superfund Remedy Selection, John S. Applegate, Steven M. Wesloh

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Unlike most environmental statutes, CERCLA requires a lengthy period of labor-intensive activity to achieve its clean-up goals. This aspect of the Superfund program does not receive sufficient attention in policy and legal analyses of CERCLA, nor during site-specific remedy selection decision-making. The risks of the remediation period-to workers, to site neighbors, and to the natural environment-are substantial, as this Article illustrates. However, the confusing and sometimes dismissive treatment of remediation risk in the EPA 's detailed guidance for Superfund decision-makers invites the neglect of the short-term effectiveness criterion in the remedy selection process. A study of remedy selection documents in …

Gravity Drainage Prior To Cake Filtration, Scott A. Wells, Gregory K. Savage Jan 1998

Gravity Drainage Prior To Cake Filtration, Scott A. Wells, Gregory K. Savage

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

During the initial stages of a Buchner funnel or specific resistance test, gravity drainage occurs prior to application of the pressure differential. Some allow time for a small cake to form by gravity drainage. Filtrate data from the gravity drainage period can be used to determine constitutive properties of the cake under a hydrostatic pressure gradient. The constitutive properties that define the structure of the cake include the permeability and porosity as functions of the applied stress. Equations governing the drainage rate during a gravity filtration experiment assuming a constant and a non-constant average cake permeability and cake porosity were …

Behavioral Economics Analysis Of Redistributive Legal Rules, Christine Jolls Jan 1998

Behavioral Economics Analysis Of Redistributive Legal Rules, Christine Jolls

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Essay offers a behavioral economic analysis of redistributive legal rules. Redistributive legal rules are rules chosen for their effects in shifting wealth from high-income to low-income individuals(progressive redistribution). The desirability of such rules has been the subject of intense debate within the legal community. Many law and economics scholars have urged that legal rules be chosen solely with an eye towards Kaldor-Hicks efficiency (which I will call simply "efficiency" for the remainder of this Essay); these scholars often urge that distributional considerations be addressed (if they are to be addressed at all) exclusively through the tax and welfare systems. …

The Feasibility Of Atm Operations Over High Frequency Radio And The Viability Of The Atm/Hf Architecture, Paul Giovanni Jan 1998

The Feasibility Of Atm Operations Over High Frequency Radio And The Viability Of The Atm/Hf Architecture, Paul Giovanni

Theses

High Frequency (HF) radio is still a vital part of communications networks because its low cost and long distance capabilities, and still plays important roles as primary, supplemental, or redundant backup systems. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is increasingly becoming an important part of communications, especially with LAN Emulation (LANE) specifications. Add to this the importance and increasing interest and dependency upon wireless networking, and it becomes inevitable that research into mobile ATM networking over HF radio would be considered. To test the feasibility of ATM networking over HF radio it was decided that a simulation would be developed to collect …
