Determining Capture Zones For Three-Dimensional, Heterogeneous, Anisotropic Aquifers By Monte Carlo Analysis, Jon Paul Jones
Determining Capture Zones For Three-Dimensional, Heterogeneous, Anisotropic Aquifers By Monte Carlo Analysis, Jon Paul Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Most methods of delineating capture zones for pump-and-treat remedial design and wellhead protection assume a two-dimensional, homogeneous aquifer. Aquifers, however, are three-dimensional and heterogeneous, thereby introducing uncertainty in capture zone analysis. This study used a Monte Carlo analysis of three sets of statistical parameters defining aquifer heterogeneity. Each set had a different variance for the mean natural log hydraulic conductivity, which varied among the sets by a factor of four. The ensemble means of the capture zones for each set were estimated from 10 randomly generated fields with 12 layers each which were superimposed on each other for a total …

Ion Bernstein Waves Driven By Two Transverse Flow Layers, Mark Anthony Reynolds, G. Ganguli
Ion Bernstein Waves Driven By Two Transverse Flow Layers, Mark Anthony Reynolds, G. Ganguli
Publications
The interaction between two narrow layers of E3B flow is investigated, along with their stability properties. The mode frequencies, growth rates, and eigenfunctions are calculated. It is found that the instability due to a single layer is robust to the inclusion of a second layer. Specifically, when the separation between the layers is on the order of the ion-cyclotron radius, there is strong coupling between the two layers and the second layer is destabilizing. In addition, when the flow velocities are in opposite directions a wide variety of modes is possible, including near-zero-frequency modes, resulting in broadband structure in both …

Looking At Children Looking At Art : Teacher Response To Aesthetic Journals In Art, Julie A. Alden
Looking At Children Looking At Art : Teacher Response To Aesthetic Journals In Art, Julie A. Alden
Graduate Research Papers
Although recent trends in art education emphasize a discipline based approach to instruction, the elementary art experience often focuses on the process components of art production, overlooking other significant areas of study (Adams, 1992; Garoian, 1988; Hickman, 1994 ). One way in which educators can help make art experiences more meaningful to students is to use response journals for viewing artwork. Educators have established the use of response journals as a worthy practice by providing students with opportunities to develop greater understanding of content material and by providing teachers with valuable insight into students thinking through shared dialogue (Hall, Crawford …
20th Century Rhetorical Influences On United States-Mexico Relations, A. Gene Wendorf
20th Century Rhetorical Influences On United States-Mexico Relations, A. Gene Wendorf
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The thesis documents the important influences that have shaped Mexican-American relations in the late 19th century and in the 20th century. These influences uncover areas that go over and beyond the conventional schools of diplomacy. They include a whole myriad of forces. The thread of our relations is found to be based largely on self determination made by each Presidential administration.
It is demonstrated that many Presidents have acted as their own statesmen in regard to Mexico. In searching for influences the researcher finds culture, language, technology, politics, economics, history, geography and religion as relevant. The nature of United States …
Designing And Implementing Successful Staff Development, Peggy A. Sheetz
Designing And Implementing Successful Staff Development, Peggy A. Sheetz
Graduate Research Papers
What staff development factors are vital to ensure successful staff training for the integration of technology into the curriculum? What variability factors must be taken into account when planning and implementing staff development?
In theory, staff development should not take very long, and educators should be able to ascertain the meaning and directions that are given related to technology quite easily. However, the staff development that is thought out and executed well is the staff development opportunity that is effective. Effective staff development requires five factors: time, access, collaboration, training and implementation. Without these factors being considered, success will be …
The Integration Of The Superhighway Into The Classroom : The Advantages And Disadvantages And Precautions That Need To Be Taken When Allowing The Internet Into The Classroom, Shawn Louise Maly
Graduate Research Papers
Today few educators go without using some kinds of computer technology. Every year the number of schools connected to the Internet grows, as does the number of teachers with their own e-mail accounts. Now we seem to be heading into the areas of virtual instruction and virtual classrooms. The growth of computers is going to continue; it is inevitable. As we continue moving forward in education and technology, what are the advantages, disadvantages and precautions that need to be taken to integrate the Superhighway into the everyday classroom?

A Test Of Additional Effort Expenditure In The "Walk Year" For Major League Baseball Players, Benjamin D. Grad
A Test Of Additional Effort Expenditure In The "Walk Year" For Major League Baseball Players, Benjamin D. Grad
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
Whether they "overperform" or underperform, it is clear that there is incentive for players to do well in their walk year. This same incentive is not present for players either already tied up in long-term contracts or those without enough major league service time to qualify for free-agent status. This paper seeks to test whether the assertion that players perform better and expend more effort in their "walk year" is empirically observable.

Epideictic Rhetoric And The Formation Of Collective Identity: Nineteenth-Century Mormon Women In Praise Of Polygamy, Robbyn Thompson Scribner
Epideictic Rhetoric And The Formation Of Collective Identity: Nineteenth-Century Mormon Women In Praise Of Polygamy, Robbyn Thompson Scribner
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I will proceed as follows: my first chapter will be a general overview of epideictic rhetoric, focusing on the limitations of how it has traditionally been viewed and understood by theorists. At the end of that chapter I will establish a working definition of epideictic which extends traditional views about how epideictic can function in certain types of writings, focusing on the important role of the speaker in epideictic rhetoric and how it can work in enabling a community to create a collective identity. In the remainder of the thesis, I will analyze two texts in which …
The Impact Of "Fair Use" In The Higher Education Community: A Necessary Exception?, Oren R. Griffin, Stephana I. Colbert
The Impact Of "Fair Use" In The Higher Education Community: A Necessary Exception?, Oren R. Griffin, Stephana I. Colbert
Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works
Despite legislative efforts to define it, the concept of Fair Use has been the subject of aggressive debate among publishers, authors, librarians, and users of copyrighted information ("academics") at academic institutions. With the advent of the Internet and the prospect of multimedia projects, the debate has intensified and expanded into the international community.
This Article focuses primarily on the challenges that face academic administrators and college and university attorneys seeking to advise their academic clients of the parameters of the Fair Use Doctrine-encouraging both sharing and dissemination of scholarly information, and compliance with the law, while limiting institutional liability. This …
Messages Of Individualism In French, Spanish, And American Television Advertising, Ronald E. Taylor, Joyce M. Wolburg
Messages Of Individualism In French, Spanish, And American Television Advertising, Ronald E. Taylor, Joyce M. Wolburg
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Individualism is a central value in French, Spanish, and American cultures. However, what it means to be an individual and how this is expressed varies among cultures. This study explores the ways that television advertising reflects individualism in French, Spanish, and American cultures and uses a qualitative approach that allows coding categories to emerge from the three countries' samples rather than imposing previously defined categories from a single culture. The study identifies six main advertising message strategies across the three cultures: the Efficient Individual, the Sensual Individual, the Attractive/Healthy Individual, the Esteemed Individual, the Performant(e) Individual, and the Intellectual Individual. …

A Company's Organs And Its Officers As Its Agents In Company Contracts / Shanti Thuraisingam, Thuraisingham Shanty
Pre-2000 Student Works
This dissertation proposes to examine the organs of the Company and its officers as its agents in company contracts. It will also examine the law in England and Australia pertaining to the said subject and recommend whether Malaysia should be prompted to adopt the statutory reforms of these countries. It is generally said that the human agency through which the capacity of the company can operate or manage and conduct itself lies either in the shareholders acting together in general meeting or the board of directors, the two principal organs of the company. Both these organs have an organic quality …

Confronting First Nations Cultural Genocide: Showcasing Perspective Of Cree Elders For Identity And Leadership Renewal, Phyllis S.A. Cardinal Edd
Confronting First Nations Cultural Genocide: Showcasing Perspective Of Cree Elders For Identity And Leadership Renewal, Phyllis S.A. Cardinal Edd
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gain insight on the effects of cultural genocide through the lens of selected Cree elders in Alberta, Canada. The study enlisted the elders' perspective on the legacy of cultural genocide, and its residue. This process enabled the elders to offer views about Cree identity, and suggest a leadership perspective for continued cultural renewal. The study applied a Lockean theory to the attack on Natural Law to explain the genocide. The study also explained the way Locke's ideas may have contributed to the earlier federal policies that have subordinated the Cree, and to the …

Transborder Economic Development: A Collaborative Partnership In The San Diego-Tijuana Region, Piedad Garcia Edd
Dissertations
The study seeks to understand and develop insights into the San Diego-Tijuana transborder economic collaborative partnership, by examining the Binational Planning and Coordination Committee (BPCC). This entity was established in 1993 via a Letter of Agreement between the City of San Diego and the municipality of Tijuana. Pursuant to the Letter of Agreement the BPCC is examined against the backdrop of the global economy, the emergence of region-states, U.S.-Mexico relations and transborder relations in the San Diego-Tijuana region. A qualitative single case-study methodology is applied to explain the role, function, structure, decision making processes and collaborative leadership relationships of the …

Storytelling In Project Heart To Heart: A Means To Bridge Generational Gap In Post-1965 Filipino Immigrant Families, Juanita Toledo Santos Nacu Edd
Dissertations
As we share our experiences with others, we also explore its meaning to ourselves and to whomever it is being shared with. This is how stories are told. Most families usually develop a body of stories that is passed on from one generation to the next generation. These stories are used to preserve the family member's identity, history, and values. The stories touch not only our past experiences, but also influences our present and links it to the future. This study explored the Filipino American families' experiences of storytelling as a means of bridging together past, present, and future experiences …
Voices Against Discrimination And Exclusion: Latino School Leaders' Narratives For Change, Jaime J. Romo Edd
Voices Against Discrimination And Exclusion: Latino School Leaders' Narratives For Change, Jaime J. Romo Edd
Dissertations
Many scholars, practitioners, and policy makers know very little about individual Latino administrators' cultural and professional experiences, responses to discrimination, and patterns or institutional conditions which relate to K-12 ethnic minority administrators' success. Moreover, many are also unaware that as ethnic diversity increases, the relative proportion of minority administrators, many of whom could be role models, shrinks. Once we can recognize this as seeds for inequity in society, we might be able to consider the ways in which our educational institution reinforces or counters societal inequities. By specifically exploring Latino administrators' experiences, because of the large Latino California presence, we …
