Modelling And Monitoring Of Phosphorus Transport And Speciation In Soil, Darren Michael William Peat Jan 1998

Modelling And Monitoring Of Phosphorus Transport And Speciation In Soil, Darren Michael William Peat

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Flow through soil into groundwater has been classically conceptualised as taking place through a set of aligned capillary tubes. In solute transport models these approximations are also present. Pore-Cor (a network model) has been used to model the void structure of soil by using water retention and mercury porosimetry curves. The model successfully predicts trends in saturated hydraulic conductivity. The effect of the assumptions used in the Pore-Cor geometry have been investigated by comparing of two dimensional slices of the simulated networks with two dimensional image analysis data. The geometric limitations of the model cause packing inefficiencies which prevent the …

Particle-Water Interactions Of Hydrophobic Organic Micropollutants In Marine Systems, M. Carl Rawling Jan 1998

Particle-Water Interactions Of Hydrophobic Organic Micropollutants In Marine Systems, M. Carl Rawling

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

An understanding of the reactivity of hydrophobic organic micropollutants (HOMs) is of paramount importance to water quality managers because of their toxicity, persistence, and liability to bioaccumulate. In this study, the role played by the main estuarine variables (organic matter, suspended particulate matter [SPM], particle type and salinity) on HOM behaviour was investigated by employing samples from estuaries with different geochemical signatures (Chupa, Russia, and the Dart, Plym, Beaulieu and Carnon, U K ) . A laboratory-based technique was developed for the determination of the solubility and sorptive behaviour of HOMs using 14C-labelled, beta-emitting organic compounds (2,2\5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (2,2’5,5'-TCB), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate ester …

On-Line Sample Pretreatment Of Environmental Samples For Use With Atomic Spectrometry, James Robert Murphy Jan 1998

On-Line Sample Pretreatment Of Environmental Samples For Use With Atomic Spectrometry, James Robert Murphy

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The objective of this study was to develop novel techniques for on-line sample pre-treatment for use with atomic spectroscopy. Preconcentration of the analytes using either complexation of the analyte(s) on an analytical column or by in-situ (in atomiser) trapping on a pre-coated graphite tube has been used. The samples were manipulated using flow injection analysis and detection achieved in most cases by ETAAS. All aspects of the study are supported by reference to the literature. Using the above approach, a new method has been developed to determine mercury in environmental (sediment) and biological (tuna fish) samples. This approach successfully achieved …

The Specially Investigated President, Charles Tiefer Jan 1998

The Specially Investigated President, Charles Tiefer

All Faculty Scholarship

This article argues that the new legal status - the "specially investigated President" - conferred upon recent presidents reflects an unprecedented change in the criminal investigation process of the President. Although recent presidents have experienced formal criminal investigations, each have used creative and legitimate ways to escape indictment, trial, or impeachment. By investigating President Bush and President Clinton's ability to successfully avoid prosecution, this article presents an analytical framework to explain the issues surrounding the "specially investigated President," and offers suggestions on how to reform the process.

In his analysis, the author illustrates the tension between opposing viewpoints regarding the …

A Visual Design Method And Its Application To High Reliability Hypermedia Systems, Robert Malcolm Newman Jan 1998

A Visual Design Method And Its Application To High Reliability Hypermedia Systems, Robert Malcolm Newman

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This work addresses the problem of the production of hypermedia documentation for applications that require high reliability, particularly technical documentation in safety critical industries. One requirement of this application area is for the availability of a task-based organisation, which can guide and monitor such activities as maintenance and repair. In safety critical applications there must be some guarantee that such sequences are correctly presented. Conventional structuring and design methods for hypermedia systems do not allow such guarantees to be made. A formal design method that is based on a process algebra is proposed as a solution to this problem. Design …

An Investigation Of The Sculpture/Language Homology, Peter Reginald Pay Jan 1998

An Investigation Of The Sculpture/Language Homology, Peter Reginald Pay

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research is concerned with the implications of reading sculpture as a mode of communication that is indicative of an art/language homology. An investigation of the inter-relationship of the functions of ‘Language’ and 'Conventions of Visual Communication' is viewed against contemporary redefinitions of the role of sculpture, its character of presentation and mode of engagement with respondents. Theoretical investigation examines models of communication and identifies corresponding systems in an art that is exemplified by the sculpture of Tony Cragg. Cragg's significantly organised collections of commonplace objects, presenting the visual assertiveness of the 'ready-made' prompt a reconsideration of the object as …

Development And Validation Of Flow-Injection (Continuous-Flow) Elisa Techniques., Declan Gerard Spillane Jan 1998

Development And Validation Of Flow-Injection (Continuous-Flow) Elisa Techniques., Declan Gerard Spillane

Theses

A flow-through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed based on affinity chromatography using the determination of ferritin in serum as a model system. In this method, samples and standards are introduced to separate columns containing immobilised anti-ferritin antibody, and antigen bound by solid-phase antibody is subsequently detected using an anti-ferritin-alkaline phosphatase conjugate. To detect immobilised label, p-nitrophenyl phosphate is added and product is developed in the column at room temperature. Following elution of product from the column, the absorbance is measured and the columns are regenerated using a low pH elution. The final developed system requires approximately 1.5 h for the …
