The Stork's Nest Program Benefits At-Risk Mothers And Their Babies, Swarna Viegas, Connie Betterley
The Stork's Nest Program Benefits At-Risk Mothers And Their Babies, Swarna Viegas, Connie Betterley
Journal of Extension
This article describes the impact of a collaborative intervention designed to promote prenatal and infant health. Classes on nutrition and other topics were held once a week for high-risk pregnant women and new mothers. Using a pre-test-post-test evaluation design, quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to assess program impact. Findings revealed statistically significant pre-test-post-test mean score differences in knowledge relating to prenatal and infant nutrition. Participants reported that as a result of the program, they started to eat healthy foods, compare food labels, reduced or stopped smoking, and decreased consumption of alcohol.
Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee
Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee
Theses
This thesis is an exploration of possibilities of the translation of Chinese characters into furniture. It is not just the two dimensional image of the character that I wish to interpret into three dimensions, but I intend that the functions and uses of the furniture are to be the meaning of the word. The final pieces are intended to be recognized as to their meaning by anyone literate in Chinese character forms. Furniture that has both form and meaning will create new possibilities for furniture's role in the environment by having this extra dimension.
Chromatographic Methods Development For The Charcterization Of Phytopharaceutical Materials, Melanie Levesque
Chromatographic Methods Development For The Charcterization Of Phytopharaceutical Materials, Melanie Levesque
Theses
The increased popularity of alternative medicine treatments has prompted resurgence in the use of traditional herbal remedies. Among this vast number of herbs, ginseng is purchased by a considerable number of consumers; especially three species: Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolium, and Eleutherococcus senticosus. Many of the physiological effects claimed by ginseng manufacturers tend to mimic those of central nervous system stimulants. This led to the purpose of this research, which was to develop an HPLC chromatographic method in order to determine if any specific CNS stimulants are within ginseng supplements. Specifically we found a series of CNS stimulants, methylxanthines (caffeine, theophylline, …

A Homage To Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 "Emperor", Young-Ji Shin
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore my personal experience with the reciprocal relationships of the various fields of art. The media of art includes the fine arts, crafts, visual arts, theater, film, music, dance and literature - all genres commonly considered "the arts." These different fields are not isolated in and of themselves but rather have mutual connections amongst them. This thesis elucidates my concept of art as one. A vague fondness for the arts drew me to the Seoul Arts High School in 1987. I had a broad interest in art in general, and did not limit …
The Simulation, Modeling And Analysis Of Wireless Local Area Networks Supporting The Ieee 802.11 Standard, Jaikwan Joo
The Simulation, Modeling And Analysis Of Wireless Local Area Networks Supporting The Ieee 802.11 Standard, Jaikwan Joo
Theses and Dissertations
Research to improve the performance of the IEEE 802.11 has been ongoing since 1990. The focus of this research has investigated the use of the MAC and Physical layers for improving throughput. An adaptive MAC protocol, CATER (Code Adapts To Enhance Reliability) is based on the proposed MAC standard for wireless local area networks (WLAN)-802. 11. IEEE 802.11 uses a fixed Pseudo-Noise (PN) code for spreading the information signal, implying a fixed process gain at the receiver. When the channel degrades, IEEE 802.11 offers only retransmissions at the MAC layer to contend with the corrupted medium. However, CATER allows communicating …

What Is Extension's Itinerary For Information Superhighway Travel?, Joseph L. Donaldson
What Is Extension's Itinerary For Information Superhighway Travel?, Joseph L. Donaldson
Journal of Extension
In this commentary, the author uses a hint of satire and his potential educational needs as a small, diversified farmer to pose important questions about Extension's itinerary for information superhighway travel. Without a plan for the use of information technology, Extension only contributes to the widening chasm between the rich and poor. Extension educators must lead the social consciousness debate on the role of information technology in our lives and find significant ways to enfranchise the poorest communities.

Mars And Venus In Extension Classes: Overcoming The Challenge Of Gender Differences In Parenting Education, Marilou Rochford
Journal of Extension
Extension educators responsible for strengthening families through parenting education. To be effective, they must work to bridge gender differences to include and encourage fathers' participation. Adapting examples from John Gray's popular text, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, the author offers practical applications for female educators working to build fatherhood groups and deliver parenting education across gender lines.
Methodology And Theory Building In Mis Research, Nancy Lightner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Methodology And Theory Building In Mis Research, Nancy Lightner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper reports on the stage of maturity of MIS research according to the McGrath (1979) model, as evidenced by the theory building occurring in two top MIS research journals. While MIS as a discipline continues to grow, its development depends on establishing a cumulative tradition of good research (Keen 1980). Of the published papers surveyed that are relevant to theory building, 81% of them relate to theory development, while 18% address theory testing. Of the papers involving data collection, more than half use field studies as the methodology. In order to advance MIS as a mature field, it is …

An Analysis Of Drafting Competencies In Iowa's High Schools, Rodrick A. Thompson
An Analysis Of Drafting Competencies In Iowa's High Schools, Rodrick A. Thompson
Graduate Research Papers
Teachers in Iowa high schools are expected to have students achieve the competencies identified by the State of Iowa Department of Education. The competencies for Iowa high school engineering-related classes were published in 1991. They were compiled as a result of Senate File 449. Industry leaders, as well as teachers, throughout the state of Iowa who were actively utilizing drafting skills in 1991 helped create the outcome competencies. Since that time, these competencies have not been reviewed or revised and may need updating. The demands of industry change so frequently it is possible these are no longer the appropriate competencies. …

Reconsidering The Hiv/Aids Prevention Needs Of Latino Women In The United States, Marcela Raffaelli, Mariana Suarez-Al-Adam
Reconsidering The Hiv/Aids Prevention Needs Of Latino Women In The United States, Marcela Raffaelli, Mariana Suarez-Al-Adam
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The HIV/AIDS epidemic represents an ever-increasing threat to Latino populations in the United States, with women being most affected by this deadly disease. In this chapter, we explore the challenges Latino women face as they attempt to reduce their risk of sexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Our main interest lies in examining how the economic, cultural, and social realities of women's lives contribute to their risk of HIV infection and constrain their ability to reduce that risk. Because there is neither a cure for AIDS nor a vaccination to block HIV transmission, prevention of infection is …

The Effect Of Suspended Particles On The Corrosion Resistance Of Electrodeposited Zinc Powders, Qing-Wen Li, Qing Yang, Xi Xia
The Effect Of Suspended Particles On The Corrosion Resistance Of Electrodeposited Zinc Powders, Qing-Wen Li, Qing Yang, Xi Xia
Journal of Electrochemistry
Zinc powders were electrodeposited from ZnCl2 baths with containing suspension of unsoluble particles such as graphite, PbO2, SnO2, TiO2, SiO2 etc.. The structure, morphology and corrosion behavior of zinc powder were analyzed. SEM results showed that the dendritic growth of zinc can be inhibited by applying the suspension method. Suspension of PbO2, SnO2, TiO2, SiO2 and In2O3 could greatly improve the corrosion protection of zinc powder in 5 mol/L KOH. In addition, fractal theory is employed to further explain the results
Electrochemical Investigation Of Effect Of Br- On Redox Behavior Of (Tpp)Co, Chuan-Wei Yan, Hai-Chao Lin, Xiang-Qin Lin
Electrochemical Investigation Of Effect Of Br- On Redox Behavior Of (Tpp)Co, Chuan-Wei Yan, Hai-Chao Lin, Xiang-Qin Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
The effect of Br- anion on electrochemical behavior of (TPP)Co was investigated in 1,2 dichloroethane solution by microelectrode and thin layer cyclic voltammetry technique. It was found that the axially coordination of one Br- anion to (TPP)Co(Ⅲ)(Br-)2 shifts the potential of porphyrin system to more positive value. The reduction peak of 0.12 V (vs.SCE) is attributed to the reduction of (TPP)Co(Ⅲ)(Br-). It is also postulated that the reduction of (TPP)Co(Ⅲ)(Br-)2 occurred at a more negative potential where the reduction of the Co(Ⅱ)/Co(Ⅰ) process happened.
