Multiple Streams Synchronization In Collaborative Multimedia Systems, Emilia Stoica Jul 1998

Multiple Streams Synchronization In Collaborative Multimedia Systems, Emilia Stoica

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

With the recent increase of the communication bandwidth and processor power, new types of applications have emerged. Among them, there are multimedia application, in which users are able to control, combine, and manipulate different types of media, such as text, sound, video, computer graphics, and animation. A key requirement in any multimedia application is to synchronize the delivery of various media streams to the user. To achieve this, the sender has to provide the temporal relations between the streams as they are captured. Since the receiver uses this information in streams presentation, its accuracy is very important.

Our main contribution …

Two Views Of Physical Attractiveness: Informational Influences On Women's Body Images, Jennifer Lee Muth Jul 1998

Two Views Of Physical Attractiveness: Informational Influences On Women's Body Images, Jennifer Lee Muth

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present experiment examined the impact of presenting information about the Advantages of Attractiveness or the Limitations of Attractiveness on women's body image experiences. One hundred and thirty-eight college students completed a pretest packet containing measures that assess state and trait body-image evaluation and appearance-related psychological investment. One week later they listened to audiotapes containing research-supported information about either the Advantages of Attractiveness or the Limitations of Attractiveness. Afterward, participants completed the measures of mood, state body image, and quality of life, manipulation check questions, and a post experimental inquiry. As expected, highly invested participants had a poorer body image …

Shoreline Change Modeling As A Tool In Coastal Environmental Management, Jorge Espinoza Amaguana Jul 1998

Shoreline Change Modeling As A Tool In Coastal Environmental Management, Jorge Espinoza Amaguana

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The one-line numerical model GENESIS has been calibrated to evaluate its performance as a tool in providing insights into the physical components to manage the coastal environment. To calibrate the model, physical environmental data, literature research, and computer modeling methodologies were utilized in addressing the objectives of this thesis. The model was applied at three beaches of the Virginia Beach City with different man-made structures by using the actual field wave data for wave year J 997. Waves are the main environmental component affecting the coastal system; however, additional environmental data and the best engineering decision were used as model …

The Relationship Of Antifat Attitudes To Other Prejudicial Attitudes: Construct Validation Of The Antifat Attitudes Test, Mark S. Perez-Lopez Jul 1998

The Relationship Of Antifat Attitudes To Other Prejudicial Attitudes: Construct Validation Of The Antifat Attitudes Test, Mark S. Perez-Lopez

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

There are many negative effects of obesity in our society. As a result, a new measure of antifat attitudes was developed. This study examined the construct, discriminant, and convergent validity of the Antifat Attitudes Test by relating antifat attitudes to racism, sexism, and homophobia.

Participants included 179 college undergraduate students. Multiple regression analyses revealed significant contributions of sex-role egalitarianism, racism, masculine ideology, body mass, and social desirability in the prediction of antifat attitudes. Several one-way analyses of variance revealed that men expressed stronger antifat attitudes than women and African-Americans were more accepting of fat individuals than were Whites. Additionally, androgynous …

Négligence, Victimes Indirectes Et Préjudice Moral En Common Law: Les Limites A La Réparation Se Justifient-Elles?, Louise Belanger-Hardy

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Common law courts have traditionally been reluctant to award damages for emotional harm. This is particularly true in cases of secondary victims of negligence. Preoccupied by the fear of fraudulent claims or the danger of opening the floodgates, courts strive to limit the scope of liability in these circumstances. But how legitimate is the reasoning that has served to support such a restrictive analysis of the decision to award damages for emotional harm? The author explores the limitations of the Canadian courts' current approach and analyzes the basis of their concern. She concludes that not only do the beliefs espoused …

A Generation Of Human Rights: Looking Back To The Future, Rosalie Silberman Abella Jul 1998

A Generation Of Human Rights: Looking Back To The Future, Rosalie Silberman Abella

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The author traces the development of human rights in North America since the Second World War, and examines the socio-political environment in which these developments took place. In examining what appears to be an existing backlash against the earlier vigorous pursuit of rights for disadvantaged groups, the author distinguishes between civil liberties and human rights, and focuses on how a preoccupation with civil liberties is impeding the ability to promote human rights. She concludes by discussing the evolution of human rights for women this generation, and observes that while there have been significant gains, especially numerically, there has also been …

Quantum Theory Of The Linewidth Of A Laser With A Saturable Absorber: Phase Diffusion, Michael Sokol Jul 1998

Quantum Theory Of The Linewidth Of A Laser With A Saturable Absorber: Phase Diffusion, Michael Sokol

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A quantum theory of the spectral width of a laser with a saturable absorber is presented. We perform a density matrix calculation yielding the off-diagonal element ρ n,n+1(t) which is proportional to the average value of the electric field associated with the laser field having a large photon number n. The general linewidth theory is applied to any general laser which has saturable absorber features for a portion of the building of the laser field. We have found that the saturable absorber action contribution to the linewidth of such a laser can be substantial. © 1998 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation …

Proton Nmr Spectroscopy As A Probe Of Dinuclear Copper(Ii) Active Sites In Metalloproteins. Characterization Of The Hyperactive Copper(Ii)-Substituted Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica, Richard C. Holz, Brian Bennett, Guanjing Chen, Li-June Ming Jul 1998

Holz, Brian Bennett, Guanjing Chen, Li-June Ming

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Proton NMR spectra of the hyperactive Cu(II)-substituted aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP) were recorded in both H2O and D2O buffered solution at pH 6.7. Several remarkably sharp, well resolved hyperfine shifted 1H NMR signals were observed in the 70 to −20 ppm chemical shift range. That hyperfine shifted signals were observed is due to spin-coupling of the two Cu(II) ions. Comparison of the spectra recorded in H2O and D2O buffered solutions indicated that the signals at 44.6, 43.3, and 17.7 ppm were solvent exchangeable. The two most strongly downfield shifted signals …

The Rhetoric And Reality Of Water Quality Protection In China, W. Scott Railton Jul 1998

The Rhetoric And Reality Of Water Quality Protection In China, W. Scott Railton

Washington International Law Journal

With the majority of its freshwater sources polluted, and the pursuant incurrence of significant economic losses, and substantial health risks, China has reached a critical stage in its water resource management. Past efforts to legislate for water quality protection, although promising in content, have been less than effective. Four modes of enforcement—administrative controls, economic incentives, legal responsibility, and campaigns—have achieved only moderate success. This Comment examines the statutory and regulatory framework for water pollution control in China and suggests that if China's water pollution controls are ever to be more than mere rhetoric, China must focus on eliminating conflicts of …

Measurement Of Hospital Performance: Environmental And Organizational Factors Associated With Cost, Debra Kay Dierksmeier Anderson Jul 1998

Measurement Of Hospital Performance: Environmental And Organizational Factors Associated With Cost, Debra Kay Dierksmeier Anderson

Health Services Research Dissertations

As U.S. health care expenditures top the $1 trillion mark, there is increased interest in measuring the performance of health care providers. For bottom line oriented payors such as government and business, the focus is on measuring cost. As hospitals account for over one-third of health care expenses, hospital cost per admission is a common measure of performance.

Many environmental and organizational factors come into play in determining hospital cost per admission. This research examines several of these factors, using Raymond Zammuto's model of organizational effectiveness assessment. Using Zammuto's framework, this research looks at the relationship of social, physical, and …

The Political Personality Of U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Aubrey Immelman Jul 1998

The Political Personality Of U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of an indirect psychodiagnostic assessment of the political personality of U.S. vice president Al Gore, Democratic nominee in the 2000 presidential election, from the conceptual perspective of Theodore Millon.

Information concerning Al Gore was collected from published biographical and autobiographical accounts and political reports in the print media, and synthesized into personality profiles using the second edition of the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM-IV.

The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of interpretive guidelines …

Autopoiesis And The "Relative Autonomy" Of Law, Hugh Baxter Jul 1998

Autopoiesis And The "Relative Autonomy" Of Law, Hugh Baxter

Cardozo Law Review

Recent accounts of the relation between law and other social spheres have emphasized law's "relative autonomy." The intuition behind the "relative autonomy" formula is that law is neither wholly independent of, nor entirely reducible to, political, economic and other social processes. Sensible as this intuition is, however, the idea of "relative autonomy" by itself remains purely negative. It excludes two unpalatable extremes-pure formalism and pure instrumentalism-but it does not by itself characterize, in positive theoretical terms, the relation between law and other social discourses or practices.

This Article examines an attempt in recent German social thought to specify theoretically the …

Digital Image Retrieval Using Shape-Based Queries, James Carswell Jul 1998

Digital Image Retrieval Using Shape-Based Queries, James Carswell

Conference papers

In this paper we present the development of a spatial data management system utilizing sketch-based queries for the content-based retrieval of digital images from topographic databases. We discuss our overall strategy and associated algorithmic and implementational aspects, and present the associated database design issues. The query tools devised in this research are employing user-provided sketches of the shape and spatial configuration of the object(s) which should appear in the images to be retrieved. Our strategy is scale-independent. It is inspired by least-squares matching (lsm), and represents an extension of lsm to function with a variety of raster representations. The results …

Financial Globalization: Can National Currencies Survive?, James Tobin Jul 1998

Financial Globalization: Can National Currencies Survive?, James Tobin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Fixed exchange rate, pegs to hard currencies that can be adjusted, are fragile, the more so the more mobile are capital funds across currencies and national markets. Once market participants doubt, for whatever reason, the ability of a developing or emerging economy’s central bank to meet its commitment to redeem it currency in hard currency at the promised rate, they will race to claim the country’s external reserves. Vulnerability to crises becomes greater as financial markets become less regulated and more internationally open. To escape currency crises, a country may lock its money to that of a reserve-currency country, as …
