Perjury! The Charges And The Defenses, Richard H. Underwood

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Perjury is the most hotly debated topic in America today. In this witty and instructive article, the author explains what constitutes the crime of perjury, provides examples of how defendants have sometimes avoided conviction, and discusses the impact of federal and state statutes on prosecutors, defendants, witnesses, the judiciary, the legislature, and society.

Genetic Admixture And Gallbladder Disease In Mexican Americans, Marilyn Tseng, Robert C. Williams, Kurt R. Maurer, Moses S. Schanfield, William C. Knowler, James E. Everhart Jul 1998

Genetic Admixture And Gallbladder Disease In Mexican Americans, Marilyn Tseng, Robert C. Williams, Kurt R. Maurer, Moses S. Schanfield, William C. Knowler, James E. Everhart

Kinesiology and Public Health

Gallbladder disease is a common source of morbidity in the Mexican American population. Genetic heritage has been proposed as a possible contributor, but evidence for this is limited. Because gallbladder disease has been associated with Native American heritage, genetic admixture may serve as a useful proxy for genetic susceptibility to the disease in epidemiologic studies. The objective of our study was to examine thepossibility that gallbladder disease is associated with greater Native American admixture in Mexican Americans. This study used data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and was based on 1,145 Mexican Americans who underwent gallbladder ultrasonography …

Replication Banding And Sister-Chromatid Exchange Of Chromosomes Of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Q. Zhang, W. R. Wolters, T. R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

A replication banding procedure using fluorouracil (FU) and bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was developed for use with cultured leukocytes of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Analyzable banding patterns were produced on chromosomes stained with a fluorochrome plus Giemsa (FPG) method. The consistency of the chromosomal bands was evaluated by computer-assisted image analysis. Banding patterns of representative chromosomes including those bearing nucleolus organizer regions (NOR) were reproducible. A standard RBG-banded karyotype (R bands by BrdU and Giemsa) was established with idiograms of each chromosome. We also developed procedures to study sister- chromatid exchange (SCE) and sister-chromatid differentiation (SCD) in cultured leukocytes, without addition of …

Self-Reflection Within The Academy: The Absence Of Women In Constitutional Jurisprudence, Karin M. Mika Jul 1998

Self-Reflection Within The Academy: The Absence Of Women In Constitutional Jurisprudence, Karin M. Mika

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This article will suggest that legal education has failed to represent the significant contributions of women in our American legal heritage within its curriculum. It urges that an acknowledgment of the feminine contribution must now be included within the curriculum of law schools in such a way that the contribution is incorporated within traditional substantive courses rather than select courses dealing with primarily "women's issues." Focusing on the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries, this article highlights the achievements and legal battles of women which were integral to the overall development of legal theory in our country. It discusses some of …

The Drudge Case: A Look At Issues In Cyberspace Defamation, Robert M. O'Neil

Washington Law Review

In the days following Newsweek's January 1998 decision to defer publication of an exposé of President Clinton's alleged affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, attention focused on the medium where the story first appeared: Matt Drudge's online gossip column, The Drudge Report. Though his postings on this issue seem to have been substantially accurate, Mr. Drudge has recently been sued for defamation because an earlier Report carried a story of a quite different sort, in which even he conceded there were some flaws. That lawsuit provides a vehicle through which to explore a fascinating array of legal …

Magnetic And Magneto-Optic Study Of A Layered Co/Pt - Dysprosium-Iron-Garnet System, J.M. Meldrim, Roger D. Kirby, M.J. Devries, John A. Woollam, David J. Sellmyer Jul 1998

Magnetic And Magneto-Optic Study Of A Layered Co/Pt - Dysprosium-Iron-Garnet System, J.M. Meldrim, Roger D. Kirby, M.J. Devries, John A. Woollam, David J. Sellmyer

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Abstract-We have studied the effects of placing Co/Pt multilayers on dysprosium-iron-garnet doped with bismuth and aluminum. The garnet was deposited by RF-magnetron sputtering and crystallized by rapid thermal annealing. The Co/Pt multilayers were then deposited by DC-magnetron sputtering. The garnet thickness was held constant at lOOO Å while the ColPt multilayer had the form of [3 Å Co/9 Å Pt]n with n ranging from 1 to 16. Coercivities of the samples ranged from about 300 to 2000 Oe. Kerr rotations were as high as 1.8° and ellipticities up to 2° depending upon the wavelength of light and the number …

Evidence, Marc T. Treadwell Jul 1998

Evidence, Marc T. Treadwell

Mercer Law Review

Previous surveys have addressed the trend--or at least what the author perceives to be the trend--of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals in recent years to defer more to district court judges' evidentiary decisions. This trend can be contrasted with the activism displayed by Eleventh Circuit judges in decisions discussed in earlier survey articles. However, the 1996 Eleventh Circuit decision in Joiner v. General Electric Co. bucked this trend and applied a very rigid level of scrutiny to a trial court decision to exclude expert testimony. During the current survey period, the Supreme Court reversed Joiner because of its …

Analysis Of Social Behavior In Individuals With Social Phobia And Nonanxious Participants Using A Psychobiological Model, Kenneth S. Walters, Debra A. Hope Jul 1998

Analysis Of Social Behavior In Individuals With Social Phobia And Nonanxious Participants Using A Psychobiological Model, Kenneth S. Walters, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study sought to test hypotheses derived from Trower and Gilbert’s (1989) psychobiological/ethological model of social anxiety. This model purports that social anxiety should be characterized by less social cooperation and dominance and greater submission and escape/avoidance. Individuals with social phobia and nonanxious participants completed a structured social interaction. Behavioral measures related to cooperativeness, dominance, submissiveness, and escape/avoidance were coded by independent observers. Those with social phobia exhibited fewer behaviors of social cooperativeness and dominance than did nonanxious participants. The groups did not differ with regard to submissive and escape/avoidance behaviors. Two dominance behaviors correlated with a self-report measure of …

A Method For The Measurement Of Divalent Cations In Solutions Of Carboxymethylcellulose, J. Todd Henderson Jul 1998

A Method For The Measurement Of Divalent Cations In Solutions Of Carboxymethylcellulose, J. Todd Henderson

Theses

The purpose of this research was to develop a method that would quantify the divalent cations in aqueous solutions of sodium carboxymethylcellulose. The technique employed for the elemental analysis was Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy (ICP). It was found using multiple filtrations, through filters of different pore sizes, that the polymer could be removed from solution thus allowing the remaining cation concentration to be determined. The data obtained suggest that ICP ES allows precise determination of Magnesium, Calcium, or Strontium concentrations for CMC solutions of varying ionic strengths. The method was then used to look for trends between the percent …

Knowledge: The New Republic, K L Chopra

IIMB Management Review

As the societies of the world have progressed from the spoken to the written medium, to the audiovisual and finally to the electronic media for communication, civilisations have undergone enormous changes. With the IT revolution, coupled with an era of globalised economics and commerce, 'knowledge' power, as K L Chopra puts it, will increasingly dominate the governance, social and economic structure and lifestyle of a nation. In this Republic of Knowledge, the 'knowledge worker', 'knowledge engineering' and 'knowledge factories' will play a pivotal role in determining its health and wealth. However, it remains to be seen whether the new Republic …

Quality Of Service Semantics For Multimedia Database Systems, Jonathan Walpole, Charles Krasic, Ling Liu, David Maier, Calton Pu, Dylan Mcnamee, David Steere

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Quality of service (QoS) support has been a hot research topic in multimedia databases, and multimedia systems in general, for the past several years. However, there remains little consensus on how QoS support should be provided. At the resource-management level, systems designers are still debating the suitability of reservation- based versus adaptive QoS management. The design of higher system layers is less clearly understood, and the specification of QoS requirements in domain-specific terms is still an open research topic. To address these issues, we propose a QoS model for multimedia databases. The model covers the specification of user-level QoS preferences …
