Library Home Page Design: A Comparison Of Page Layout For Front-Ends To Arl Library Web Sites, David L. King
Faculty Publications
The author examined the home pages of all 120 libraries in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in order to compare design similarities and differences. This was accomplished by first filling out a questionnaire on each home page and then tabulating the findings using simple averages and medians. Areas examined were: backgrounds, document headers, document footers, document body, page length, number of steps to library home page from parent institution Web site, and domain name servers. A typical home page is discussed using the averages of these results.

Just Compensation For Per Se Environmental Takings, George Galgano
Just Compensation For Per Se Environmental Takings, George Galgano
Pace Environmental Law Review
Changing social conditions and heightened awareness of environmental conditions have led to a dramatic increase in land regulations. This Comment will further focus on and explore takings claims based-on environmental surveillance. Under the Comprehensive Environmental Response & Liability Act (CERCLA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has authority to gain access to real property and conduct tests, some of which require both the removal of soil and installation of monitoring devices. Affected property owners have, in the past, challenged environmental surveillance as an unconstitutional taking. While some landowners have been successful, others have not. This Comment will conclude that the current …

Computer Synthesis Of Spectroradiometric Images For Color Imaging Systems Analysis, Garrett M. Johnson
Computer Synthesis Of Spectroradiometric Images For Color Imaging Systems Analysis, Garrett M. Johnson
Theses
A technique to perform full spectral based color calculations through an extension of OpenGL has been created. This method of color computations is more accurate than the standard RGB model that most computer graphics algorithms utilize. By maintaining full wavelength information in color calculations, it is also possible to interactively simulate and display many important color phenomena such as metamerism and fluorescence. This technique is not limited to creating simple images suitable for interactive display, however. Using this extension, it is also possible to synthesize spectroradiometric images of arbitrary spatial and spectral resolution, for use in color imaging system analysis.

The chemokine receptors CCR5 and CXCR4 are used by human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in conjunction with CD4 to infect cells. In addition, some virus strains can use alternative chemokine receptors, including CCR2b and CCR3, for infection. A polymorphism in CCR2 (CCR2-V64I) is associated with a 2- to 4-year delay in the progression to AIDS. To investigate the mechanism of this protective effect, we studied the expression of CCR2b and CCR2b-V64I, their chemokine and HIV-1 coreceptor activities, and their effects on the expression and receptor activities of the major HIV-1 coreceptors. CCR2b and CCR2b-V64I were expressed at …

Evidence On Risk Changes Around Audit Qualification And Qualification Withdrawal Announcements, Neil L. Fargher, Michael S. Wilkins
Evidence On Risk Changes Around Audit Qualification And Qualification Withdrawal Announcements, Neil L. Fargher, Michael S. Wilkins
School of Business Faculty Research
Qualifications to an audit report may provide the basis for an auditor's claim that the user was warned about an unusual risk. If audit qualifications highlight changes in firm risk that are material, then the announcement of a qualification should be associated with an increase in the risk of the affected firm. In this paper, we test this proposition. Our initial tests do not detect a shift in systematic risk around qualification announcements; however, subsequent analysis shows that firms announcing recurring material uncertainties have higher levels of systematic risk than firms announcing initial qualifications. Furthermore, we document a significant decrease …

Being connected for most Africans means something completely different from most of us in more (technologically) "developed" countries. Compared to those who have virtually unlimited and relatively cheap access to e-mail and the World Wide Web (WWW), most Africans have limited access to e-mail only. Outside of South Africa, which hosts 70 full Internet Service Providers (ISPs); Egypt, which hosts 25; and Morocco, which hosts 15, most African countries have well under 10 ISPs, the average being loser to 1 or 2 (Jensen, 1998). This example demonstrates the diversity of the African continent; one cannot simply typify the African example. …

Biodegradation Of Atrazine By Agrobacterium Radiobacter J14a And Use Of This Strain In Bioremediation Of Contaminated Soil, J. K. Struthers, K. Jayachandran, T. B. Moorman
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
We examined the ability of a soil bacterium, Agrobacterium radiobacter J14a, to degrade the herbicide atrazine under a variety of cultural conditions, and we used this bacterium to increase the biodegradation of atrazine in soils from agricultural chemical distribution sites. J14a cells grown in nitrogen-free medium with citrate and sucrose as carbon sources mineralized 94% of 50 μg of [14C-U-ring]atrazine ml-1 in 72 h with a concurrent increase in the population size from 7.9 x 105 to 5.0 x 107 cells ml-1. Under these conditions cells mineralized the [ethyl-14C]atrazine …

Bubble Fractionation Of Enantiomers From Solution Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymers As Collectors, Daniel W. Armstrong, J. M. Schneiderheinze, Y. S. Hwang, B. Sellergren
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Adsorptive bubble separation methods have been used to enrich components from both heterogeneous and homogeneous solutions. These methods are particularly effective for processing large solution volumes at low cost Previous work demonstrated that chiral, surface-active collectors could be used to enrich enantiomers from homogeneous solution in a foam fractionation process. In a significant extension of this work, the use of highly selective molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and heterogeneous solutions for the bubble flotation of enantiomers was evaluated. The high selectivity and ease of recycling of the MIP make this a potentially powerful approach for process-scale separations from large-volume bulk solutions. …
The Political Personalities Of 1996 U.S. Presidential Candidates Bill Clinton And Bob Dole, Aubrey Immelman
The Political Personalities Of 1996 U.S. Presidential Candidates Bill Clinton And Bob Dole, Aubrey Immelman
Psychology Faculty Publications
The personalities of President Bill Clinton and Senator Bob Dole were indirectly assessed from the conceptual perspective of Theodore Millon.
Information pertaining to Bill Clinton and Bob Dole was collected from published biographical material and synthesized into personality profiles using Millon’s diagnostic criteria.
President Clinton was found to be primarily Asserting/self-promoting and Outgoing/gregarious, whereas Senator Dole emerged from the assessment as primarily Controlling/dominant and Conforming/dutiful.
A dimensional reconceptualization of the results to examine convergences among the present Millon-based findings, Simonton’s dimensions of presidential style, and the five-factor model suggests that Clinton is predominantly charismatic/extraverted, whereas Dole is deliberative/conscientious and relatively …

Nato After Enlargement: New Challenges, New Missions, New Forces, Stephen J. Blank Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
In 1999 NATO will formally admit three new members and adopt a new strategic concept. In so doing, it will take giant strides towards effecting a revolutionary transformation of European security. On the one hand, it could be said that NATO enlargement closes the immediate post-Cold War period that began with the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989. But on the other hand, enlargement raises a host of serious new issues for the Alliance and for U.S. policymakers that they must begin to address now. Bearing this fact in mind, the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) organized a conference with …

The surface of the complex oxides, in particular the manganese perovskites, is dominated by a different free enthalpy at the surface. This can be demonstrated by surface segregation after annealing the samples. By comparing relative x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy intensities of the manganese perovskite La1-xCaxMnO3 (x=0.1, 0.35) for different emission angles, the profile of elemental concentration was determined. Analysis shows evidence for pronounced surface segregation of calcium. Our results suggest that there are strong differences between surface and bulk enthalpies without segregation or surface relaxation. This is consistent with the previously observed surface resonance in the …
A Comparison In Processing Of Alginate Orthodontic Impressions By Commercial Labs, Robert Agnetta
A Comparison In Processing Of Alginate Orthodontic Impressions By Commercial Labs, Robert Agnetta
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Many orthodontists use commercial orthodontic laboratories for the processing of their impressions including preparation of the impression for pouring, model retrieval, final trim, and labeling. It was studied, by way of random sample survey, what materials and methods were most commonly utilized in 100 offices of members of the American Association of Orthodontics. This survey data was analyzed and used to establish a protocol to study differences in dimensions of models made from impressions that were poured immediately, versus those that were stored and picked up at the office the same day they were taken, and those that were shipped …

Localization Of Sodium, Potassium-Adenosine Triphosphatase In The Cerebral Cortex Of Developing Rats, Maki Ujiie
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Active transport via Na+, K+-ATPase plays an important role in establishing and maintaining proper ionic gradient across all mammalian cell membranes. A strict regulation of Na+, and K+ ion levels is especially important in excitable cells such as neurons and myocytes. Inhibition of the enzyme is associated with several pathological conditions and has serious detrimental effects on cerebral cortical cells. Yet the enzyme appears to be limited in amount and distribution in newborn rats. In this study, Na+, K+- ATPase expression and distribution in early postnatal rats were studied …

Recruitment On Paper, Recruitment On The Web: An Examination Of The Rhetorical Strategies Used In Each Medium, Danielle Amorena Glanzer
Student Work
This study examines the rhetoric of college and university recruitment on paper and on the Internet. In particular, the centers on the difference between the two media in relation to their readers, writers, and final texts. A triangulated research approach was used: text analysis, interviews with writers and readers, and reader surveys that include open- and closed-ended questions. The printed and electronic recruitment materials of three peer institutions of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) formed the basis of the research. Those institutions included the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), the University of Texas at San Antonia (UTSA), and …
