Off The Playground Of Civil Society: Freeing Democracy's Powers For The 21st Century, Harry C. Boyte Oct 1998

Off The Playground Of Civil Society: Freeing Democracy's Powers For The 21st Century, Harry C. Boyte

Civic Engagement

"Civil society" is now the defining map of our civic life. Embedded in its framework are assumptions about the activity of the citizen and the meaning of democracy. The idea of civil society today vividly illustrates the power of framing concepts to structure resources and define political themes. Major foundations have divisions of civil society that allocate hundreds of millions of dollars to volunteer activity. Government agencies give time off to their employees so that they can "do citizenship." Presidents gathered last year at the Summit on Volunteerism to praise the idea. Meanwhile, a coalition organized by "end of work" …

The Government's War On Mergers: The Fatal Conceit Of Antitrust Policy, William F. Shughart Ii Oct 1998

The Government's War On Mergers: The Fatal Conceit Of Antitrust Policy, William F. Shughart Ii

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Antitrust is thought by some to be the bulwark of free enterprise. Without the vigilance of the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission, so the argument goes, giant corporations would ruthlessly destroy their smaller rivals and soon raise prices and profits at consumers’ expense. But antitrust has a dark side. Opposition to mergers, though in theory based on worries that competition may be impaired, often in practice comes not from consumers whose interests antitrust is supposed to defend, but from competitors faced with the prospect of a larger, more aggressive rival. Because they respond to the demands of competitors, …

Exact Relations For Effective Tensors Of Polycrystals. Ii. Applications To Elasticity And Piezoelectricity, Yury Grabovsky, Daniel S. Sage Oct 1998

Exact Relations For Effective Tensors Of Polycrystals. Ii. Applications To Elasticity And Piezoelectricity, Yury Grabovsky, Daniel S. Sage

Faculty Publications

An important necessary condition for an exact relation for effective moduli of polycrystals to hold is stability of that relation under lamination. This requirement is so restrictive that it is possible (if not always feasible) to find all such relations explicitly. In order to do this one needs to combine the results developed in Part I of this paper and the representation theory of the rotation groups SO(2) and SO(3). More precisely, one needs to know all rotationally invariant subspaces of the space of material moduli. This paper presents an algorithm for finding all such subspaces. We illustrate the workings …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 1998-10-22, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 1991-2000

Students, faculty, and staff at the College of Wooster stood as a silent witness in opposition to hatred and violence. Fifty people gathered at Lowry Center for a vigil and remembrance service for Matthew Shepard, a 21 year-old gay student at the University of Wyoming who was beaten and killed on October 8th, 1998. The college denies a request to contract with the Equal Exchange coffee company. 10 Wooster students joined nearly 400 people gathered in Washington, D.C. to protest against the military establishment. The National Network of Presbyterian College Women (NNPCW) releases a statement in response to attacks from …
