Age, Growth, And Mortality Of Black Drum, Pogonias Cromis, In The Chesapeake Bay Region, Cynthia M. Jones, Brian Wells

OES Faculty Publications

We used otolith ageing to describe the population dynamics of black drum, Pogonias cromis, collected over a three-year period from the Chesapeake Bay region's commercial and recreational fisheries. Black drum average age, total length, and weight were 26 years, 109.5 cm, and 22.1 kg respectively. The oldest fish was 59 years and fish older than 50 years were present in the catch from 1990 to 1992. Growth in length slowed by age 20, whereas growth in weight did not slow until age 45. A von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to our data (L(infinity) = 117.3 cm, …

The Biogeochemical Cycling Of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen In Estuarine Sediments, David J. Burdige, Shilong Zheng Jan 1998

The Biogeochemical Cycling Of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen In Estuarine Sediments, David J. Burdige, Shilong Zheng

OES Faculty Publications

Benthic fluxes and pore-water profiles of dissolved organic nitrogen and carbon (DON and DOC, respectively) were determined in seasonal studies at contrasting sites in Chesapeake Bay. Pore-water dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentrations were elevated over bottom-water values, generally increased with depth, and ranged from 15 to similar to 160 μM for DON and ~200-2000 μM for DOC. Pore-water DOM concentrations and the C:N ratio of this material showed spatial (depth) and temporal changes that varied among the sites studied. These trends appeared to be related to differences in the types of sediment organic matter (SOM) undergoing remineralization, as well as …

Iron In Ice Cores From Law Dome, East Antarctica: Implications For Past Deposition Of Aerosol Iron, R. Edwards, Peter N. Sedwick, Vin Morgan, C. F. Boutron, S. Hong

OES Faculty Publications

Total-dissolvable iron has been measured in sections of three ice cores from Law Dome, East Antarctica, and the results used to calculate atmospheric iron deposition over this region during the late Holocene and to provide a preliminary est. of aerosol iron deposition during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Ice-core sections dating from 56-2730 BP (late Holocene) and ∼18 000 BP (LGM) were decontaminated using trace-metal clean techniques, and total-dissolvable iron was determined in the acidified meltwaters by flow-injection analysis. Our results suggest that the atmospheric iron flux onto the Law Dome region has varied significantly over time-scales ranging from seasonal …

Three Types Of Gamma-Ray Bursts, Soma Mukherjee, Eric D. Feigelson, Gutti Jogesh Babu, Flonn Murtagh, Chris Fralev, Adrian Raftery

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A multivariate analysis of gamma-ray burst (GRB) bulk properties is presented to discriminate between distinct classes of GRBs. Several variables representing burst duration, fluence, and spectral hardness are considered. Two multivariate clustering procedures are used on a sample of 797 bursts from the Third BATSE Catalog, a nonparametric average linkage hierarchical agglomerative clustering procedure validated with Wilks' Λ* and other multivariate analysis of variance tests and a parametric maximum likelihood model-based clustering procedure assuming multinormal populations calculated with the Expectation-Maximization algorithm and validated with the Bayesian Information Criterion. The two methods yield very similar results. The BATSE GRB population consists …

Searching For Periodic Sources With Ligo, Patrick R. Brady, Teviet Creighton, Curt Cutler, Bernard F. Schutz Jan 1998

Searching For Periodic Sources With Ligo, Patrick R. Brady, Teviet Creighton, Curt Cutler, Bernard F. Schutz

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We investigate the computational requirements for all-sky, all-frequency searches for gravitational waves from spinning neutron stars, using archived data from interferometric gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO. These sources are expected to be weak, so the optimal strategy involves coherent accumulaton of signal-to-noise using Fourier transforms of long stretches of data (months to years). Earth-motion-induced Doppler shifts, and intrinsic pulsar spindown, will reduce the narrow-band signal-to-noise by spreading power across many frequency bins; therefore, it is necessary to correct for these effects before performing the Fourier transform. The corrections can be implemented by a parametrized model, in which one does …

Hierarchical Search Strategy For The Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Coalescing Binaries: Extension To Post-Newtonian Waveforms, Soumya Mohanty Jan 1998

Hierarchical Search Strategy For The Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Coalescing Binaries: Extension To Post-Newtonian Waveforms, Soumya Mohanty

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The detection of gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries would be a computationally intensive process if a single bank of template wave forms (one step search) is used. In an earlier paper we presented a detection strategy, called a two step search, that utilizes a hierarchy of template banks. It was shown that in the simple case of a family of Newtonian signals, an on-line two step search was ≃8 times faster than an on-line one step search (for the initial LIGO). In this paper we extend the two step search to the more realistic case of …

Critical Casimir Forces Between Spherical Particles In Fluids, Andreas Hanke, F. Schlesener, E. Eisenriegler, S. Dietrich Jan 1998

Critical Casimir Forces Between Spherical Particles In Fluids, Andreas Hanke, F. Schlesener, E. Eisenriegler, S. Dietrich

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Long-ranged correlations in a fluid close to its critical point Tc cause distinct forces between immersed colloidal particles and the container walls. We calculate such a force and its temperature dependence for the generic case of a spherical particle located at a distance D from a planar wall and find that the force attains a maximum at a temperature Tmax(D) above Tc, which facilitates quantitative experimental tests. The corresponding effective pair interaction between the colloidal particles themselves, potentially leading to aggregation, is also discussed.

Ab Initio Single- And Multiple-Scattering Exafs Debye-Waller Factors: Raman And Infrared Data, Nicholas Dimakis, Grant Bunker Jan 1998

Ab Initio Single- And Multiple-Scattering Exafs Debye-Waller Factors: Raman And Infrared Data, Nicholas Dimakis, Grant Bunker

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The extended x-ray-absorption fine structure (EXAFS) Debye-Waller factor is an essential term appearing in the EXAFS equation that accounts for the molecular structural and thermal disorder of a sample. Single- and multiple-scattering Debye-Waller factors must be known accurately to obtain quantitative agreement between theory and experiment. Since the total number of fitting parameters that can be varied is limited in general, data cannot support fitting of all relevant multiple-scattering Debye-Waller factors. Calculation of the Debye-Waller factors is typically done using the correlated Debye approximation, where a single parameter (Debye temperature) is varied. However, this procedure cannot account in general for …

A Data Analysis Approach For Detecting Gravitational Waves From Psr 0437-4715, Soumya Mohanty, I. S. Heng, David Blair, S. Dhurandhar, M. Tovar, E. Ivanov Jan 1998

A Data Analysis Approach For Detecting Gravitational Waves From Psr 0437-4715, Soumya Mohanty, I. S. Heng, David Blair, S. Dhurandhar, M. Tovar, E. Ivanov

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A search for gravitational waves from the millisecond pulsar PSR 0437-4715 has been initiated using the bar detector NIOBE which is located at the University of Western Australia. We present a detailed report on the data analysis algorithm, called phase plane rotation, which will be used in this search. A discussion of the actual implementation of the algorithm is presented. The data analysis algorithm mentioned above has the advantage that it requires minimal changes to the already-existing data acquisition facility of NIOBE but, at the same time, it is as efficient as optimal filtering in detecting a signal. This …

The Equal Education Under the Law Symposium continues a conversation among legal and educational professionals that seeks to advance and perhaps refocus the rather dramatic debate over the future of public education in our country. The good news for this debate is that we start with a clear consensus on goals. Few, if any, would dissent from the following statement of principle: the future success of this nation depends in large measure on the requirement that every citizen have the chance to share in the country's good fortune, and the key to providing that chance, for all citizens, lies in …

Inclusion Of Modern Composites Technology Into A Federal Aviation Administration Airframe And Powerplant Curriculum, Ben Daniel Humphrey Jan 1998

Inclusion Of Modern Composites Technology Into A Federal Aviation Administration Airframe And Powerplant Curriculum, Ben Daniel Humphrey

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Rapid growth in the use of composite materials in the last two decades has driven curriculum designers to combine the study of such materials with that of more traditional materials. Within the guidelines of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant Certification curriculum, in which hours and content are mandated rather inflexibly? This fact necessitates creative modification of current programs in order to add valuable new technologies to an already full schedule.

Evaluation Of Toxicity, Bioavailability And Speciation Of Lead, Zinc And Cadmium In Mine/Mill Wastewaters, Mujde Erten-Unal, Bobby G. Wixson, Nord Gale, Jerry L. Pitt

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The toxicity of common compounds of lead, cadmium and zinc was evaluated in waters similar to that found in the world's largest lead producing area in Missouri. Static, acute toxicity tests were performed using fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and water fleas (Daphnia magna) respectively. Test organisms were subjected to varying amounts of sulfide, carbonate, chloride and sulfate salts of lead, zinc and cadmium mixed in hard, alkaline waters typical to this region. Median lethal concentrations were calculated using nominal versus measured metal concentrations. Measured metal concentrations included four different metal fractionation (extraction/filtration) techniques at different pH …

Solvent Extraction Of La^{3+} Withethylenediamine-N,N'-Ditetradecyl-N,N'-Diacetic Acid(Eddat) In Dichloromethane, Mürüvvet Yurdakoç, Halil Hoşgören

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Ethylenediamine-N,N'-ditetradecyl-N,N'-diacetic acid (EDDAT) was synthesized for the solvent extraction of La$^{3+}$. EDDAT was prepared from ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetic acid (EDDA) and tetradecyl bromide in a basic n-amylalcohol-ethanol-water solvent system. The structure of this new extracting reagent was identified according to spectroscopic data, i.e. $^{13}$C NMR, $^1$H NMR, and elemental analysis results. The solvent extraction of La$^{3+}$ with EDDAT in dichloromethane was studied as a function of parameters of the aqueous and organic phases. The optimal extraction conditions were determined. The extraction yield increased with a decrease in hydrogen ions in the aqueous phase. Stripping of the La$^{3+}$ loaded organic phase was achieved …

Comparison Of Different Production Processes For Bioethanol, B. Çaylak, Fazilet Vardar Sukan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, ethanol was produced with the microorganism {\em Saccharomyces cerevisiae} by using sucrose as a substrate. Batch processes were tested by using the same substrate, microorganism and medium composition. {\em Saccharomyces cerevisiae}, used in the free form in the first group of experiments, was immobilized by different methods. In the second group of experiments agar, sponge and a natural material called luffa cylindrica fiber were used as support materials. The batch processes with free and immobilized microorganisms were compared with respect to efficiency and yield.

Kinetic Studies Of The Thermal Decomposition Of Di- And Tri-Organotin Derivatives Of 1-Nitroso-2-Naphthol, Saqib Ali, Moazzam H. Bhatti, Sohail Mahmood, Muhammad Mazhar, M. Saleem Khalid, Nazar Hussain Jan 1998

Kinetic Studies Of The Thermal Decomposition Of Di- And Tri-Organotin Derivatives Of 1-Nitroso-2-Naphthol, Saqib Ali, Moazzam H. Bhatti, Sohail Mahmood, Muhammad Mazhar, M. Saleem Khalid, Nazar Hussain

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The di- and tri-organotin complexes of general formula R$_2$SnL$_2$ and R$_3$SnL where R = C$_4$H$_9$, C$_6$H$_5$, C$_6$H$_5$CH$_2$, C$_6$H$_{11}$ and L=1-nitroso-2-naphthol, were subjected to thermal decomposition by means of thermogravimetry (TG). The decomposition occurred in steps and the kinetics of every set of reactions were determined using the method described by Coats and Redfern. These results were analysed to establish the decomposition kinetics and hence to calculate activation energies. The activation energies were also determined by applying the method described by Horowitz, which yielded comparable results.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

An electrolytic Copper Solution (ECS) was electrolyzed using platinum electrodes. Copper was obtained in solid form. In order to precipitate Cd(II), Bi(III), As(III), Sb(III) and the rest of the Cu(II) ions, H_2S gas was passed through the remaining solution. The remaining solution was evaporated to obtain metal sulphates. The sample containing metal sulphates was roasted at temperatures between 550 and 800°C. Cobalt, nickel and zinc in the solid sample remained in the form of metal sulphates, while the iron in the sample was converted into Fe_2O_3. This solid sample was dissolved in water and filtered in order to crystallize the …

Indirect Complexometric Determination Of Mercury Using Potassium Iodide As Selective Masking Agent, B. Muralidhara Rao Jan 1998

Indirect Complexometric Determination Of Mercury Using Potassium Iodide As Selective Masking Agent, B. Muralidhara Rao

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This paper describes a indirect complexometric method for the determination of mercury in the presence of co-ions, based on the selective masking ability of potassium iodide. To the mixture of mercury (II) and other metal ion solution, EDTA solution was added in excess of the metal ions present. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 5.0-6.0 using solid hexamine ($10 \pm 2$ g) and surplus EDTA was titrated with zinc sulfate solution using xylenol orange indicator. An excess of solid potassium iodide was then added to decompose the Hg-EDTA complex and the released EDTA was titrated with standard zinc …

Crystal Structure Of Dichlorodiaquabis-(P- Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde)Manganese(Ii), Veysel T. Yilmaz, Turan K. Yazicilar, Halis Ölmez, R. Alan Howie

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The crystal structure of dichlorodiaquabis-($p$-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde)manganese(II), [MnCl$_2$(OH$_2$)$_2$(C$_9$H$_{11}$NO)$_2$], was determined from X-ray intensity data. The structure consists of the isolated molecules of the complex. The central Mn atom in the complex is coordinated by txo $p$-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and two water molecules and also two chlorine atoms, resulting in a distorted octahedral environment. The same molecules or ions occupy {\it trans} positions. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak hydrogen bonds present between the isolated molecules.

President Clinton And The Rhetoric Of Time, Estrella Cedeno Jan 1998

President Clinton And The Rhetoric Of Time, Estrella Cedeno

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study analyzes President's Clinton 1993 and 1997 inaugural addresses, and his use of time as a rhetorical strategy. Influenced by his situational constraints and based on a definition of the situation that emphasizes time as a paramount element, Clinton is able to articulate an inaugural rhetoric that instead of being passive and contemplative calls for action. In so doing, Clinton's inaugurals finds its uniqueness. I contend that Clinton's rhetoric of time gives meaning to the transformations of the post-industrial revolution and also serves as a form of social control.
