The Relationship Of Teacher Cognitive Style And Teacher Job Satisfaction, Moderated By Administrator Management Style, Holly Shella Jaacks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Success as a school administrator strongly depends upon the complex interplay of teacher cognitive style, teacher satisfaction on the job, and the effectiveness of the principal's administrative management style. Nonetheless, the supervision of teachers within their cognitive style has had little research or attention given to it. According to the literature, administrative management style greatly influences teachers perceptions of satisfaction on the job. A wide variety of variables, directly impacted by administrative management style, influence a teachers degree of job satisfaction; This study surveyed teacher's cognitive style, as determined by Witkin's Field Dependence, Field Independence model utilizing the Group Embedded …

Critical Multiculturalism In The Classroom: From Theory To Practice, Denise Michelle Dalaimo Jan 1998

Critical Multiculturalism In The Classroom: From Theory To Practice, Denise Michelle Dalaimo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since Paulo Freire's (1970) revolutionary work Pedagogy of the Oppressed, "radical" (critical/feminist/multicultural) educators have endeavored to change the face of education by altering traditional power relations and by including the work and experiences of previously under- or unrepresented groups. Research to date in the field of radical pedagogy has been largely focused on and performed in the small and intimate classroom. Many of the approaches and techniques proposed by radical educators---though effective in smaller classes---are difficult to implement in the larger, more impersonal classroom which is becoming more and more prevalent in contemporary higher education. This research has been largely …

The Effectiveness Of Traditional Instructional Methods In An Online Learning Environment, Steven Bradford Smith Jan 1998

The Effectiveness Of Traditional Instructional Methods In An Online Learning Environment, Steven Bradford Smith

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For more than a century, the most predominant form of instruction in higher education has been classroom-based and instructor-led. Today, this traditional approach to learning is being challenged by new technologies such as multimedia, telecommunications, and the Internet. It has been suggested that the effectiveness of traditional pedagogical methods in alternative learning environments may be resolved through the creation of a new domain for educational interaction referred to as online education (Harasim, 1990); There has been much research focused on the advantages of teaching university courses online (Davis, Odell, Abbitt, Amos, 1999; Hiltz, 1994; Harasim, 1990). However, there is little …

Knowledge of current and potential ways that social power operates provides social workers tools in promoting the goals of empowerment and uncovering and enhancing clients' strengths; Finally, a public sphere within which a reflective social work practice could …

Fear Itself: Assessing The Risks Of Transporting High-Level Nuclear Waste, Fred Carl Dilger Jan 1998

Fear Itself: Assessing The Risks Of Transporting High-Level Nuclear Waste, Fred Carl Dilger

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis contrasts and compares two approaches to risk assessment as they apply to the problem of transporting high level radioactive waste to Yucca Mountain, NV. Risk assessment, a lineal descendant of cost-benefit analysis, is an increasingly popular tool for justifying policy or programmatic decisions that involve some potential for public harm. The study uses Frank Fischer's framework for policy analysis to examine the problem of transportation risk assessment and to propose a new process for risk assessment that has political legitimacy, rather than technical elegance, as its goal.

Population Size Estimation From Mark-Resighting Surveys, Huawen He Jan 1998

Population Size Estimation From Mark-Resighting Surveys, Huawen He

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We consider the problem of estimating the size of a closed population based on the results of a certain type of marking-resighting sampling design. The design is similar to the commonly used multiple capture-recapture design, yet in some cases economically more feasible and easy to use. Sampling is done by first tagging a number of randomly selected animals with visible markers and later randomly sighting them (for instance, for large animals by visually sampling from a helicopter) and counting the number of tagged animals; In this paper, by using the above mentioned sampling scheme we present the maximum likelihood estimation …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of applying a thermal sprayed coating on a spent nuclear fuel waste package is to prevent moisture contacting the spent nuclear fuel for tens of thousands of years. This thesis studies some of the thermal effects that a coated waste package may experience. Residual stress from the thermal spray process is one of these effects and in this study two modeling methods are compared. Finally, a finite element analysis of the initial emplacement of the spent nuclear fuel in the waste package is used to determine if any spalling of the coating from the waste package will occur; …

Astronomical Image Manipulation In The Transform Domain, Biao Chen Jan 1998

Astronomical Image Manipulation In The Transform Domain, Biao Chen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It is well known that images are usually stored and transmitted in the compressed form to save memory space and I/O bandwidth. Among many image compression schemes, transform coding is a widely used coding method. Traditionally, processing a compressed image requires decompression first. Following manipulations, the processed image is compressed again for storage. To reduce the computational complexity and processing time, manipulating images in the semi-compressed or transform domain is an efficient solution; Many astronomical images are compressed and stored by JPEG and HCOM-PRESS, which are based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), respectively. …

Language Games And Computer-Aided Composition, Ryan M Moeller Jan 1998

Language Games And Computer-Aided Composition, Ryan M Moeller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Wittgenstein's theory of the "language game" looks at the specific context in which language finds meaning. This theory significantly influences composition theory and practice within the problematic context of the computer-aided classroom, a much more complex and fast-paced environment than the traditional composition classroom. Students face a challenging, semester-long language game of creating a context from learning and meaning by actively participating in the rule-making processes of language. As a result, they are responsible for creating and maintaining their own language games by negotiating their ways through chatrooms (synchronous discussions), email (asynchronous discussions), virus complications, and other technological problems. Therefore, …

Recreation And Gambling Behaviors Among College Students, Laurie Platz Jan 1998

Recreation And Gambling Behaviors Among College Students, Laurie Platz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Motivation of student gamblers was described and compared with their motivation for other recreational activities. Students (N = 996) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas completed self-report questionnaires including The South Oaks Gambling Screen (Lesieur and Bloom, 1987) and the Recreation Experience Preference Scales (Driver, 1983). Despite differences in statistical significance (p {dollar}<{dollar}.01), pathological gamblers (N = 111) and recreational gamblers (N = 349) shared 7 of their top 10 ranked motives for gambling. Primary motives for gambling appeared to remain stable with practical differences emerging in the rankings of their importance depending on an individual's level of gambling involvement. All students assigned statistically higher importance to their favorite other recreational activities than to their favorite gambling activities. However, recreational gamblers reported more agreement between motives for participating in their favorite gambling activities and their favorite other recreational activities.
