Monte Carlo Simulation Of An Ion-Dipole Mixture As A Model Of An Electrical Double Layer, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Kwong-Yu Chan Nov 1998

Monte Carlo Simulation Of An Ion-Dipole Mixture As A Model Of An Electrical Double Layer, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Kwong-Yu Chan

Faculty Publications

Canonical Monte Carlo simulations were performed for a nonprimitive model of an electrical double layer. The ions and the solvent molecules are modeled as charged and dipolar hard spheres, respectively, while the electrode as a hard, impenetrable wall carrying uniform surface charge. We found that the ion-dipole model gives a reasonable description of the double layer for partially charged ions with small to moderate dipole moments, or equivalently for an "effective" dielectric constant. Density, polarization and mean electrostatic potential profiles are reported. Strong layering structure, and at higher charges, charge inversion in the second layer were found. With appropriate choices …

Accurate Classification Of Juvenile Weakfish Cynoscion Regalis To Estuarine Nursery Areas Based On Chemical Signatures In Otoliths, Simon R. Thorrold, Cynthia M. Jones, Peter K. Swart, Timothy E. Targett Nov 1998

Accurate Classification Of Juvenile Weakfish Cynoscion Regalis To Estuarine Nursery Areas Based On Chemical Signatures In Otoliths, Simon R. Thorrold, Cynthia M. Jones, Peter K. Swart, Timothy E. Targett

OES Faculty Publications

We investigated the ability of trace element and isotopic signatures in otoliths to record the nursery areas of juvenile (young-of-the-year) weakfish Cynoscion regalis from the east coast of the USA. Juvenile C. regalis were captured with otter trawls at multiple sites in Doboy Sound (Georgia), Pamlico Sound (North Carolina), Chesapeake Bay (Virginia), Delaware Bay (Delaware) and Peconic Bay (New York), from July to September 1996. One sagittal otolith from each specimen was assayed for Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), while delta 13 C and delta 18 O values from the other sagittal …

Web Bags: Are They Useful In A Web Warehouse?, Sourav S. Bhowmick, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sets and bags are closely related structures. A bag is different from a set in that it is sensitive to the number of times an element occurs while a set is not. In this paper, we introduce the concept of web bag in a web warehouse as a part of our Web Information Coupling System(WICS). Informally, a web bag is a web table which allows multiple occurrences of identical web tuples. Web bag helps to discover useful knowledge from a web table such as visible documents (or web sites), luminous documents and luminous paths. We formally discuss the semantics and …

Interior Blowup In A Convection-Diffusion Equation, Christopher P. Grant Nov 1998

Interior Blowup In A Convection-Diffusion Equation, Christopher P. Grant

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the qualitative behavior of a nonlinear convection-diffusion equation on a smooth bounded domain in Rn, in which the strength of the convection grows superlinearly as the density increases. While the initial-boundary value problem is guaranteed to have a local-in-time solution for smooth initial data, it is possible for this solution to be extinguished in nite time. We demonstrate that the way this may occur is through nite-time "blow up," i.e., the unboundedness of the solution in arbitrarily small neighborhoods of one or more points in the closure of the spatial domain. In special circumstances, such as the …

A Theory Of Satisficing Decisions And Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling Nov 1998

A Theory Of Satisficing Decisions And Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling

Faculty Publications

The existence of an optimal control policy and the techniques for finding it are grounded fundamentally in a global perspective. These techniques can be of limited value when the global behavior of the system is difficult to characterize, as it may be when the system is nonlinear, when the input is constrained, or when only partial information is available regarding system dynamics or the environment. Satisficing control theory is an alternative approach that is compatible with the limited rationality associated with such systems. This theory is extended by the introduction of the notion of strong satisficing to provide a systematic …

Behavioral Theories Of Judgment And Decision Making In Legal Scholarship: A Literature Review, Donald C. Langevoort Nov 1998

Behavioral Theories Of Judgment And Decision Making In Legal Scholarship: A Literature Review, Donald C. Langevoort

Vanderbilt Law Review

Nearly all interesting legal issues require accurate predictions about human behavior to be resolved satisfactorily. Judges, policy- makers, and academics invoke mental models of individual and social behavior whenever they estimate the desirability of alternative rules, policies, or procedures. Contemporary legal scholarship has come to recognize that if these predictions are naive and intuitive, without any strong empirical grounding, they are susceptible to error and ideological bias. Something more rigorous is thus expected when normative claims are advanced, and the place of the social sciences has expanded in legal discourse to satisfy this expectation.'

Three branches of the social sciences-economics, …

Can There Be A Behavioral Law And Economics?, Samuel Issacharoff Nov 1998

Can There Be A Behavioral Law And Economics?, Samuel Issacharoff

Vanderbilt Law Review

The emergence of the modern law and economics analysis generally is dated to the early 1960s with the publication of seminal work by Ronald Coase' and subsequently by Guido Calabresi and Douglas Melamed. These articles laid the foundation for the relation between legal rules, wealth maximization, and transaction costs, which provided the pivotal application of economic analysis to legal problems. However, the current sweep of law and economics would have been inconceivable without Gary Becker's insight into the application of neoclassical comparisons of marginal utility to the stuff of everyday life. Becker's analysis of routine decision making in terms of …

Development Of A Discrete Ordinates Code System For Unstructured Meshes Of Tetrahedral Cells, With Serial And Parallel Implementations, Rodney L. Miller Nov 1998

Development Of A Discrete Ordinates Code System For Unstructured Meshes Of Tetrahedral Cells, With Serial And Parallel Implementations, Rodney L. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

A numerically stable, accurate, and robust form of the exponential characteristic (EC) method, used to solve the time-independent linearized Boltzmann Transport Equation, is derived using direct affine coordinate transformations on unstructured meshes of tetrahedra. This quadrature, as well as the linear characteristic (LC) spatial quadrature, is implemented in our transport code, called TETRAN. This code solves multi-group neutral particle transport problems with anisotropic scattering and was parallelized using High Performance Fortran and angular domain decomposition. A new, parallel algorithm for updating the scattering source is introduced. The EC source and inflow flux coefficients are efficiently evaluated using Broyden's rootsolver, started …

A Photometric And Kinematic Study Of Awm 7, Daniel M. Koranyi, Margaret Geller, Joseph J. Mohr, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have measured redshifts and Kron-Cousins R-band magnitudes for a sample of galaxies in the poor cluster AWM 7. We have measured redshifts for 172 galaxies; 106 of these are cluster members. We determine the luminosity function (LF) from a photometric survey of the central 1.2 × 1.2 h-1 Mpc. The LF has a bump at the bright end and a faint-end slope of α = -1.37 ± 0.16, populated almost exclusively by absorption-line galaxies. The cluster velocity dispersion is lower in the core (~530 km s-1) than at the outskirts (~680 km s-1), …

NotePals is an ink-based, collaborative note taking application that runs on personal digital assistants (PDAs). Meeting participants write notes in their own handwriting on a PDA. These notes are shared with other participants by synchronizing later with a shared note repository that can be viewed using a desktop-based web browser. NotePals is distinguished by its lightweight process, interface, and hardware. This demonstration illustrates the design of two different NotePals clients and our web-based note browser.

A Global Object Model For Accommodating Instance Heterogeneities, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To completely address database integration problems in the context of multidatabase [10] and data warehousing systems, one has to examine various integration and query requirements. Due to various reasons such as poor data quality in local databases, ongoing local database updates, and instance heterogeneities, some instance differences have to be accommodated by the integrated databases. We have therefore proposed a new object-oriented global data model, called OORA, that can accommodate attribute and relationship instance heterogeneities in the integrated database. In addition, the OORA model has been designed to allow database integrators and end users to query both the local and …

Web Warehousing System: Design And Issues, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim, Sourav S. Bhowmick, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The World Wide Web is a distributed global information resource. It contains a large amount of information that have been placed on the web independently by different organizations and thus, related information may appear across different web sites. To manage and access heterogeneous information on WWW, we have started a project of building a web warehouse, called Whoweda (Warehouse of Web Data). Currently, our work on building a web warehousing system has focused on building a data model and designing a web algebra. In this paper, we discuss design and research issues in a web warehousing system. The issues include …

Evaluating Density Forecasts With Applications To Financial Risk Management, Francis X. Diebold, Todd A. Gunther, Anthony S. Tay Nov 1998

Evaluating Density Forecasts With Applications To Financial Risk Management, Francis X. Diebold, Todd A. Gunther, Anthony S. Tay

Research Collection School Of Economics

We propose methods for evaluating density forecasts. We focus primarily on methods that are applicable regardless of the particular user’s loss function. We illustrate the methods with a detailed simulation example, and then we present an application to density forecasting of daily stock market returns. We discuss extensions for improving suboptimal density forecasts, multi-step-ahead density forecast evaluation, multivariate density forecast evaluation, monitoring for structural change and its relationship to density forecasting, and density forecast evaluation with known loss function.

Student Services In Distant Learning Environments, Nancy Aden, Ward Sybouts, Roger Wess Oct 1998

Student Services In Distant Learning Environments, Nancy Aden, Ward Sybouts, Roger Wess

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

At the end of the millennium in which the idea of the university has blossomed, population growth is outpacing the world’s capacity to give people access to universities. A sizable new university would now be needed every week merely to sustain current participation rates in higher education....Sir John S. Daniel, Vice Chancellor of The Open University; 6; p. 1
Traditional higher education institutions will probably be successful in the distance learning market if these two services are carefully developed and maintained: 1. provide quality learning experiences for students.
2. provide quality STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES.
