A three dimensional finite element program is developed for the analysis of pavement systems. An explicit approach of the finite element analysis is adopted. This approach results in a vector formulation of the equation of motion. Large displacement is considered through the use of a co-rotational approach which considers small deformations and large rotations of the elements. For the convenience of application a two dimensional finite element program is also developed. An eight-node ¶metric solid element is used for the three dimensional analysis, and a four-node element for the two dimensional analysis. Loading conditions are verified for static ramp and …

Following a recent series of failures of overhauled third stage turbine blades in the JT8D- 15A gas turbine engine, new inspection criteria have been introduced by the engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney. One such inspection checks for airfoil bowing and lean. A blade will bow or lean towards the suction face of the airfoil as a result of creep during engine operation. Third stage turbine blades from the JT8D low pressure turbine have been observed with as much as two millimetres of deflection measured at mid-span. We present a new algorithm called PBSIM for computing image similarity, based upon a novel method of extracting bloblike features from images. In tests on a classification task using a data set of over 1000 images, PBSIM shows significantly higher accuracy than algorithms based upon color histograms, as well as previously reported results for another approach based upon bloblike features.

This Article examines the derivatives market, its regulation and the concept of suitability as it applies - and should be applied - to the derivatives market. The Article first provides an overview of the derivatives market. Next, the Article reviews the existing regulatory framework to which derivatives transactions and derivatives dealers are subject and also discusses the various legal actions that can be brought based on suitability claims. The Article argues against the imposition of suitability rules to OTC derivatives dealers and instead emphasizes the need to view OTC derivatives transactions as arm's length transactions.
