Superantigens stimulate T-lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production, but the effects of superantigen exposure on cell function within a complex, highly regulated immune response remain to be determined. In this study, we demonstrate that superantigen exposure significantly alters the murine host response to bacterial antigens in an in vitro coculture system. Two days after exposure to the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin B, splenocytes cultured with Streptococcus mutans produced significantly greater amounts of gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-12 than did sham-injected controls. The majority of IFN-gamma production appeared to be CD8(+) T-cell derived since depletion of this cell type dramatically reduced the levels …

Parity nonconservation was studied for 23 p-wave resonances in 113Cd up to En=500eV at the LANSCE pulsed neutron source using a longitudinally polarized neutron beam and the time-of-flight method. The helicity dependence of the total neutron capture cross section was measured with an enriched 113Cd target and with a target of natural cadmium. Parity violating effects were observed for several resonances in 113Cd and 111Cd. A root-mean-square value of the parity nonconserving matrix element MJ=1=2.9-0.9+1.3meV was obtained for the spin J=1 levels in the compound nucleus 114Cd. This …

Development Of A Hard X-Ray Polarimeter For Astrophysics, Mark L. Mcconnell, John R. Macri, M Mcclish, James M. Ryan, D J. Forrest, W T. Vestrand

Space Science Center

We have been developing a Compton scatter polarimeter for measuring the linear polarization of hard X-rays (100-300 keV) from astrophysical sources. A laboratory prototype polarimeter has been used to successfully demonstrate the reliability of our Monte Carlo simulation code and to demonstrate our ability to generate a polarized photon source in the lab. Our design concept places a self-containedpolarimeter module on the front-end of a a 5-inch position sensitive PMT (PSPMT). We are currently working on the fabrication of a science model based on this PSPMT concept. Although the emphasis of our development effort is towards measuring hard X-rays from …

Quasars As Cosmological Probes: The Ionizing Continuum, Gas Metallicity, And The WΛ-L Relation, Kirk Korista, Jack Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Using a realistic model for line emission from the broad emission line regions of quasars, we are able to reproduce the previously observed correlations of emission-line ratios with the shape of the spectral energy distribution (SED). In agreement with previous studies, we find that the primary driving force behind the Baldwin effect (Wλ ~ Lβ, β < 0) is a global change in the SED with quasar luminosity, in that more luminous quasars must have characteristically softer ionizing continua. This is completely consistent with observations that show (1) a correlation between Luv, αox, and αuvx (2) correlations of SED shape-sensitive line ratios with αox, αuvx, and Luv; and (3) correlations between line equivalent widths and αox, αuvx …

A Late Cambrian Positive Carbon-Isotope Excursion In The Southern Appalachians: Relation To Biostratigraphy, Sequence Stratigraphy, Environments Of Deposition, And Diagenesis, Bosiljka Glumac, Kenneth R. Walker

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

A positive carbon-isotope excursion is recorded within the Upper Cambrian sedimentary succession in the southern Appalachians that consists of the Nolichucky Shale, the Maynardville Formation, and the Copper Ridge Dolomite. The lower part of the succession contains Aphelaspis zone fauna (Early Steptoean). The extensively dolomitized and poorly fossiliferous nature of the upper part of the succession precludes any detailed biostratigraphic determinations. Correlation with similar positive carbon-isotope excursions in coeval successions elsewhere suggests that this excursion represents a perturbation in the global cycling of carbon. Comparison of excursions at different localities in North America provides a means for the application of …

Simple Model For Linear And Nonlinear Mixing At Unstable Fluid Interfaces With Variable Acceleration, John D. Ramshaw Nov 1998

Simple Model For Linear And Nonlinear Mixing At Unstable Fluid Interfaces With Variable Acceleration, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple model is described for predicting the time evolution of the half-width h of a mixing layer between two initially separated immiscible fluids of different density subjected to an arbitrary time-dependent variable acceleration history a(t). The model is based on a heuristic expression for the kinetic energy per unit area of the mixing layer. This expression is based on that for the kinetic energy of a linearly perturbed interface, but with a dynamically renormalized wavelength which becomes proportional to h in the nonlinear regime. An equation of motion for h is then derived from Lagrange's equations. This model reproduces …

Case Study Comparisons Of Standard And Energy Efficient Polyphase Induction Motors Subjected To Unbalances Phase Voltages, Brian L. Bidwell Nov 1998

Case Study Comparisons Of Standard And Energy Efficient Polyphase Induction Motors Subjected To Unbalances Phase Voltages, Brian L. Bidwell

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates the behaviors and economics of standard and energy efficient polyphase induction motors under unbalanced phase voltage conditions ofup to 5 percent. Motors sizes of 25, 50, 100,150,200, 250 and 300 hp are used in this investigation. Computer simulations are used to study the efficiencies, power losses and economics of motor behavior when unbalanced phase voltage system conditions exist. Previous polyphase induction motor studies simulated unbalanced phase voltage conditions by assuming a high impedance fault at the motor terminals. In this study, a method is used to simulate unbalanced phase voltage conditions by varying the phase voltage at …

Do Interactions Increase Or Reduce The Conductance Of Disordered Electrons? It Depends!, Thomas Vojta, Frank Epperlein, Michael Schreiber

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the influence of electron-electron interactions on the conductance of two-dimensional disordered spinless electrons. We present an efficient numerical method based on diagonalization in a truncated basis of Hartree-Fock states to determine with high accuracy the low-energy properties in the entire parameter space. We find that weak interactions increase the dc conductance in the strongly localized regime while they decrease the dc conductance for weak disorder. Strong interactions always decrease the conductance. We also study the localization of single-particle excitations at the Fermi energy which turns out to be only weakly influenced by the interactions.

Comparison Of Electron-Atom Collision Parameters For S To P Transitions Under Reversal Of Energy Transfer, Max Shurgalin, Andrew James Murray, William R. Macgillivray, M. C. Standage, Don H. Madison, Kathrin D. Winkler, Igor Bray Nov 1998

Comparison Of Electron-Atom Collision Parameters For S To P Transitions Under Reversal Of Energy Transfer, Max Shurgalin, Andrew James Murray, William R. Macgillivray, M. C. Standage, Don H. Madison, Kathrin D. Winkler, Igor Bray

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inelastic and superelastic electron scattering from the optically prepared 32P3/2 state of sodium has enabled atomic collision parameters to be deduced for the 4S-3P deexcitation and the 3S-3P excitation processes. These data are compared with convergent close coupling and second order distorted wave Born calculations. For excitation, both theories agree with experiment, whereas for deexcitation the close coupling theory is in better agreement. A long-standing proposal relating to the sign of the transferred angular momentum is not supported.

Essential Role Of Correlations In Governing Charge Transport In Disordered Organic Materials, Sergei V. Novikov, David H. Dunlap, Vasudev M. Kenkre, Paul Ernest Parris, Anatoly V. Vannikov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The transport of photoinjected charges in disordered organic films is often interpreted using a formula based on a Gaussian disorder model (GDM) that neglects spatial correlations due to charge-dipole interactions, even though such correlations have recently been shown to explain the universal electric field dependence observed in these systems. Based on extensive computer simulations of a 3D disorder model that includes such correlations, we present a new formula for analyzing experiments that accurately describes transport in these materials.

Comparison Of Water And Temperature Distribution Profiles Under Sand Tube Irrigation, Masoud Meshkat, Richard C. Warner, Stephen R. Workman Nov 1998

Comparison Of Water And Temperature Distribution Profiles Under Sand Tube Irrigation, Masoud Meshkat, Richard C. Warner, Stephen R. Workman

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Drip irrigation is one of the most efficient systems in delivering water to the plant root zone. Research has shown that the saturated, or nearly saturated, surface beneath the emitter may increase evaporation thereby reducing the irrigation efficiency. To increase the efficiency of surface applied drip irrigation on permanent tree crops a sand tube irrigation (STI) method was developed and tested. The sand tube method consists of removing a soil core beneath the emitter and filling the void with coarse sand. A weighing lysimeter was designed and instrumented to directly measure temporal evaporation during irrigation and for a period of …

An Investigation Of Using The Visual And Performing Arts As A Means To Teach Arithmetic And Geometric Patterns., Darcee Leigh Rothe Nov 1998

An Investigation Of Using The Visual And Performing Arts As A Means To Teach Arithmetic And Geometric Patterns., Darcee Leigh Rothe

Student Work

The purpose of the study was to determine what effect the integration of the visual and performing arts to a seventh grade mathematics curriculum would increase students’ understanding of arithmetic and geometric patterns. This four week study involved five classes of seventh grade students. There were two control groups and three groups which were exposed to instruction involving the integration of the arts to teach mathematical patterns. Three different assessment tools were used to gather information to explore the results. The primary instrument, the Cognitive Abilities Test (Thorndike and Hagen, 1993), focused on the quantitative and nonverbal growth in the …

Conserved Geometrical Base-Pairing Patterns In Rna, Neocles B. Leontis, Eric Westhof Nov 1998

Conserved Geometrical Base-Pairing Patterns In Rna, Neocles B. Leontis, Eric Westhof

Chemistry Faculty Publications

RNA molecules fold into a bewildering variety of complex 3D structures. Almost every new RNA structure obtained at high resolution reveals new, unanticipated structural motifs, which we are rarely able to predict at the current stage of our theoretical understanding. Even at the most basic level of specific RNA interactions – base-to-base pairing – new interactions continue to be uncovered as new structures appear. Compilations of possible non-canonical base-pairing geometries have been presented in previous reviews and monographs (Saenger, 1984; Tinoco, 1993). In these compilations, the guiding principle applied was the optimization of hydrogen-bonding. All possible pairs with two standard …

Symposium: Work And Family Introduction, Lorraine Schmall

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Work and family problems seem as numerous, and as difficult to deal with as our children. Invidious discrimination, inadequate laws, intra-family dissension all contribute to our woes. But the dialogue has begun, and problem-solving cannot be too far behind.

Stability And Reconstruction For An Inverse Problem For The Heat Equation, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill Nov 1998

Stability And Reconstruction For An Inverse Problem For The Heat Equation, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We examine the inverse problem of determining the shape of some unknown portion of the boundary of a region Ω from measurements of the Cauchy data for solutions to the heat equation on Ω. By suitably linearizing the inverse problem we obtain uniqueness and continuous dependence results. We propose an algorithm for recovering estimates of the unknown portion of the surface and use the insight gained from a detailed analysis of the inverse problem to regularize the inversion. Several computational examples are presented.

Uniqueness For A Boundary Identification Problem In Thermal Imaging, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill Nov 1998

Uniqueness For A Boundary Identification Problem In Thermal Imaging, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

An inverse problem for an initial-boundary value problem is considered. The goal is to determine an unknown portion of the boundary of a region in ℝn from measurements of Cauchy data on a known portion of the boundary. The dynamics in the interior of the region are governed by a differential operator of parabolic type. Utilizing a unique continuation result for evolution operators, along with the method of eigenfunction expansions, it is shown that uniqueness holds for a large and physically reasonable class of Cauchy data pairs.

Equal Rights, Special Rights, And The Nature Of Antidiscrimination Law, Peter J. Rubin Nov 1998

Equal Rights, Special Rights, And The Nature Of Antidiscrimination Law, Peter J. Rubin

Michigan Law Review

Despite the continued belief held by most Americans that certain characteristics should not form the basis for adverse decisions about individuals in employment, housing, public accommodations, and the provision of a wide range of governmental and private services and opportunities, antidiscrimination laws have increasingly come under attack on the ground that they provide members of the group against whom discrimination is forbidden with "special rights." The "special rights" objection has been voiced most strongly, but not exclusively, against laws that seek to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. This line of attack has not always been effective, but …

A Randomized Parallel Sorting Algorithm With An Experimental Study, D.R. Helman, D.A. Bader, J. Jájá Nov 1998

A Randomized Parallel Sorting Algorithm With An Experimental Study, D.R. Helman, D.A. Bader, J. Jájá

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Previous schemes for sorting on general-purpose parallel machines have had to choose between poor load balancing and irregular communication or multiple rounds of all-to-all personalized communication. In this paper, we introduce a novel variation on sample sort which uses only two rounds of regular all-to-all personalized communication in a scheme that yields very good load balancing with virtually no overhead. Moreover, unlike previous variations, our algorithm efficiently handles the presence of duplicate values without the overhead of tagging each element with a unique identifier. This algorithm was implemented in SPLIT-C and run on a variety of platforms, including the Thinking …
