Ecological Resilience, Biodiversity, And Scale, Garry D. Peterson, Craig R. Allen, C. S. Holling Jan 1998

Ecological Resilience, Biodiversity, And Scale, Garry D. Peterson, Craig R. Allen, C. S. Holling

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We describe existing models of the relationship between species diversity and ecological function, and propose a conceptual model that relates species richness, ecological resilience, and scale. We suggest that species interact with scale-dependent sets of ecological structures and processes that determine functional opportunities. We propose that ecological resilience is generated by diverse, but overlapping, function within a scale and by apparently redundant species that operate at different scales, thereby reinforcing function across scales. The distribution of functional diversity within and across scales enables regeneration and renewal to occur following ecological disruption over a wide range of scales.

Drought-Induced Shift Of A Forest–Woodland Ecotone: Rapid Landscape Response To Climate Variation, Craig Allen, David D. Breshears Jan 1998

Drought-Induced Shift Of A Forest–Woodland Ecotone: Rapid Landscape Response To Climate Variation, Craig Allen, David D. Breshears

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

In coming decades, global climate changes are expected to produce large shifts in vegetation distributions at unprecedented rates. These shifts are expected to be most rapid and extreme at ecotones, the boundaries between ecosystems, particularly those in semiarid landscapes. However, current models do not adequately provide for such rapid effects—particularly those caused by mortality—largely because of the lack of data from field studies. Here we report the most rapid landscape-scale shift of a woody ecotone ever documented: in northern New Mexico in the 1950s, the ecotone between semiarid ponderosa pine forest and pinon– juniper woodland shifted extensively (2 km or …

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

The first Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument is planned for launch by NASA in 1998. This instrument will provide a new and improved capability for terrestrial satellite remote sensing aimed at meeting the needs of global change research. The MODIS standard products will provide new and improved tools for moderate resolution land surface monitoring. These higher order data products have been designed to remove the burden of certain common types of data processing from the user community and meet the more general needs of global-to-regional monitoring, modeling, and assessment. The near-daily coverage of moderate resolution data from MODIS, coupled …

Larval Black Crappie Distribution: Implications For Sampling Impoundments And Natural Lakes, Kevin L. Pope, David W. Willis Jan 1998

Larval Black Crappie Distribution: Implications For Sampling Impoundments And Natural Lakes, Kevin L. Pope, David W. Willis

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

An understanding of larval fish distributions is essential for developing an appropriate sampling design to monitor larval abundances. We monitored abundance of larval black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus to assess spatial differences in Richmond Lake (a 336-ha impoundment) and Brant Lake (a 405-ha natural lake), South Dakota, during 1994–1996. Age-0 black crappies were collected with a 500-µm mesh ichthyoplankton trawl from fixed sites within each water body. In the impoundment, larval black crappies were collected over a longer period at the upper site than at the dam site during 1994 and 1995. In the natural lake, larval black crappie abundances were …

1998 Southeast Nebraska Tallgrass Praire Inventory: Johnson, Gage, And Jefferson Counties, Final Report, Robert F. Steinauer

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

This report is prepared as a requirement of the 1998 Southeast Nebraska Prairie Survey contract between the Platte/Rainwater Basin Project Office of the Nature Conservancy and Robert F. Steinauer. The original contract called for the examination of Johnson County south of Highway 136, and Gage County east of Beatrice. Due to the scarcity of prairies in these areas, the survey region was expanded to include northern Johnson County, and southern Jefferson County.

Prairies in these areas were identified using infrared and black and white photos, driving on county and within grassland roads, and conversations with landowners. Heritage Program “Site Survey …

Declines In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Populations In Southern Lake Michigan, 1980–1993, Thomas F. Nalepa, David J. Hartson, David L. Fanslow, Gregory A. Lang, Stephen J. Lozano Jan 1998

Declines In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Populations In Southern Lake Michigan, 1980–1993, Thomas F. Nalepa, David J. Hartson, David L. Fanslow, Gregory A. Lang, Stephen J. Lozano

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Densities of the major benthic macroinvertebrate groups declined dramatically at sites shallower than 50 m in southern Lake Michigan between 1980 and 1993. Declines in Diporeia, Oligochaeta, and Sphaeriidae ranged from 40 to 75% at these depths. Total densities declined from 16 800·m–2 in 1980–1981 to 4,800·m–2 in 1992–1993 at sites in the 16–30 m depth interval and from 21,300 to 11,300·m–2 at sites in the 31–50 m depth interval. Changes at sites deeper than 50 m were minimal; only sphaeriids declined to any extent. Declines in oligochaetes and sphaeriids occurred uniformly throughout the nearshore region …

Stable Isotopes And Sediments From Pickerel Lake, South Dakota, Usa: A 12ky Record Of Environmental Changes, Antje Schwalb, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Sedimentological parameters and stable O- and C-isotopic composition of marl and ostracode calcite selected from a 17.7 m long core from the 8 m deep center of Pickerel Lake, northeastern South Dakota, provide one of the longest (ca. 12ky) paleoenvironmental records from the northern Great Plains. The late Glacial to early Holocene climate in the northern Great Plains was characterized by changes from cold and wet to cold and dry, and back to cold and wet conditions. These climatic changes were controlled by fluctuations in the positions of the Laurentide ice sheet and the extent of glacial Lake Agassiz. We …

Sediment Ingestion Of Two Sympatric Shorebird Species, Clifford A. Hui, W. Nelson Beyer Jan 1998

Sediment Ingestion Of Two Sympatric Shorebird Species, Clifford A. Hui, W. Nelson Beyer

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Black-bellied plovers (Pluvialis squatarola) have short bills and primarily peck while foraging whereas Willets (Catoptrophorus semipalmatus) have long bills and primarily probe with bills open in sediments. Intestinal digesta were collected from these species at sympatric overwintering sites in southern California near San Diego to relate sediment ingestion to bill length and feeding behavior. Plover digesta contained an estimated 29% sediment, and Willet digesta an estimated 3% sediment. Techniques based on acid insoluble ash and on the elemental markers of Al, Fe, and Ti in digesta provided similar results. High Ca concentrations in Willet digesta along …

Status Of Aphis Vertebrate Pesticides And Drugs, Kathleen A. Fagerstone, Edward W. Schafer Jr. Jan 1998

Status Of Aphis Vertebrate Pesticides And Drugs, Kathleen A. Fagerstone, Edward W. Schafer Jr.

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

The Wildlife Services (WS) Program manages wildlife/human conflicts by using an integrated approach employing some vertebrate pesticides. These are used in such small quantities that private industry cannot afford to register and produce them profitably. On behalf of WS, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) maintains about 30 federal and state pesticide registrations, containing seven active ingredients, with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These include: the Compound 1080 Livestock Protection Collar, DRC-1339 Concentrates (Starlicide), Gas Cartridges (carbon and sodium nitrate), the M-44 (sodium cyanide), and a number of baits and concentrates containing Strychnine Alkaloid and Zinc Phosphide. …

Dolls And Upholstery: The Commodification Of Maya Textiles Of Guatemala, Margot Blum Schevill Jan 1998

Dolls And Upholstery: The Commodification Of Maya Textiles Of Guatemala, Margot Blum Schevill

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Introduction

Maya weavers of Guatemala are well known for their beautiful backs trap and treadle-loomed cloth, which they create for clothing and related garments and for sale, both within and outside Guatemala. Backstrap weaving, mainly a woman's occupation done in the home, has an ancient history over two millennia, although there are few extant examples of the weavings of the ancient Maya due to climatic conditions (Figure 1). The process, however, was documented in ceramic art, and the tradition of handwoven clothing can be seen in monumental stone carvings, murals, and also in ceramic art. Today weavers purchase the yarn …

Interlacing Histories Loom Technologies And Pictorial Weaving In Late-Nineteenth Century Japan And France, Leila Wice Jan 1998

Interlacing Histories Loom Technologies And Pictorial Weaving In Late-Nineteenth Century Japan And France, Leila Wice

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Starting in 1872, Japanese artisans travelled from Kyoto to Lyon, to study in the town's famed silk-weaving studios. The Jacquard mechanism which they helped to introduce to Japan the following year made the sorabiki-bata draw-loom obsolete within decades. Even in its. most basic application as an addition to hand-loom weaving, this new technology fundamentally transformed the geography and the economy of manufacturing processes by the turn of the century, but these new methods' impact on the actual fabrics which they were used to produce has yet to be fully explored.

In both countries at this time, woven pictures were one …

Modeling The Mtf And Noise Characteristics Of Complex Image Formation Systems, Brian Bleeze Jan 1998

Modeling The Mtf And Noise Characteristics Of Complex Image Formation Systems, Brian Bleeze

Theses

The intent of this research was to model sensor degradation effects using an image chain applied to a synthetic radiance image. The model is relatively basic so that many types of sensors can be modeled. The sensor effects were applied in the frequency domain by cascading modulation transfer functions (MTF) and phase transfer functions (PTF) from the different stages of the image chain. The stages consist of the optical transfer function due to the aperture effects of the optical system. Noise due to photon arrival, the signal loss due to the transmission of the optics, the MTF due to the …

Novel Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Ultrathin Chromium Oxide Films Grown On Pt(111), P S. Robbert, H Geisler, C A. Ventrice Jr, J Van Ek, S Chaturvedi, J A. Rodriguez, M Kuhn, U Diebold

Physics Faculty Publications

The growth of epitaxial metal–oxide films on lattice-mismatched metal substrates often results in the formation of unique overlayer structures. In particular, epitaxial chromium oxide films grown on Pt(111) exhibit a p(2×2) symmetry through the first two monolayers of growth which is followed by a (√3×√3)R30° phase that is attributed to the growth of a Cr2O3(0001) overlayer. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements have been performed on the CrOx/Pt(111) system. The electronic structures of CrO2, Cr2O3, and Cr3O4 were calculated using the linear muffin-tin orbital method in …

Spatiotemporal Autoregressive Models Of Neighborhood Effects, R. Kelley Pace, Ronald Barry, John M. Clapp, Mauricio Rodriquez

Faculty Publications

Using 70,822 observations on housing prices from 1969 to 1991 from Fairfax County Virginia, this article demonstrates the substantial benefits obtained by modeling the spatial as well as the temporal dependence of the data. Specifically, the spatiotemporal autoregression with twelve variables reduced median absolute error by 37.35% relative to an indicator-based model with twenty-six variables. One-step ahead forecasts also document the improved performance of the proposed spatiotemporal model. In addition, the article illustrates techniques for rapidly computing the estimates and shows how to compute indices for any location.
