Ber-Based Call Admission In Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Debasish Datta, Byrav Ramamurthy, Helena Feng, Jonathan P. Heritage, Biswanath Mukherjee Jan 1998

Ber-Based Call Admission In Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Debasish Datta, Byrav Ramamurthy, Helena Feng, Jonathan P. Heritage, Biswanath Mukherjee

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Consider a wavelength-routed optical network in which nodes, i.e., multiwave length cross-connect switches (XCSs), are connected by fiber to form an arbitrary physical topology. A new call is admitted into the network if an all-optical lightpath can be established between the call’s source and destination nodes. Wavelength converters are assumed absent in this work.

Dispersal And Longevity Of Mass-Released, Sterilized Mexican Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), Donald B. Thomas, Jesus Loera-Gallardo Jan 1998

Dispersal And Longevity Of Mass-Released, Sterilized Mexican Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), Donald B. Thomas, Jesus Loera-Gallardo

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Trap-back experiments using McPhail traps were conducted to study dispersal and longevity of mass-released, sterile Mexican fruit flies, Anastrepha ludens (Loew). The flies were released at 3 ecologically different sites in northern Mexico. Some flies were recaptured up to 9 km from the release point. However, standard distance was estimated using a regression model that indicated 240 m was the typical dispersal distance. The life expectancy of the released flies from the time of release varied from 5 to 10 d. Greatest longevity, up to 22 wk, occurred during the winter months.

Reverting Conservation Reserve Program Lands To Wheat And Livestock Production: Effects On Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Assemblages, B. Wade French, Norman C. Elliott, Richard C. Berberet Jan 1998

Reverting Conservation Reserve Program Lands To Wheat And Livestock Production: Effects On Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Assemblages, B. Wade French, Norman C. Elliott, Richard C. Berberet

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Highly erodible lands enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program soon will revert to agricultural production. This study was designed to determine the effects of reversion of Conservation Reserve Program lands to wheat and livestock production on ground beetle assemblages. Reversion strategies included no reversion of Conservation Reserve Program grass (unmanaged bluestem), simulated grazing of Conservation Reserve Program grass (managed bluestem), minimum- tillage practices for wheat production, and no-tillage practices for wheat production. A randomized block experimental design was established with 4 replicates. More ground beetles were captured in pitfall traps in 1995 than in 1996, and abundances within years differed …

Relationship Of Gypsy Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Egg Mass Age To Persistence And Color, And An Evaluation Of Two Methods To Distinguish New And Old Egg Masses, Kevin W. Thorpe Jan 1998

Relationship Of Gypsy Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Egg Mass Age To Persistence And Color, And An Evaluation Of Two Methods To Distinguish New And Old Egg Masses, Kevin W. Thorpe

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

It is necessary to distinguish new and old gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.), egg masses when conducting gypsy moth population surveys. Egg masses within reach from the ground are touched to determine if they contain unhatched eggs and thus are considered new. The following 2 methods are used for egg masses not within reach: (1) visual discrimination between new and old egg masses or (2) by calculating the percentage of new egg masses at ground level and using this value to adjust counts of all egg masses not within reach. To evaluate these methods, egg-mass persistence and color between generations, …

Monitoring Solitary Bees In Modified Wildland Habitats: Implications For Bee Ecology And Conservation, Gordon Frankie, Robbin W. Thorp, Linda E. Newstrom-Lloyd, Mark A. Rizzardi, John F. Barthell, Terry L. Griswold, Jong-Yoon Kim, Shanthi Kappagoda

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The long-term goal of this study was to use solitary bees to assess the impact of advancing Africanized honey bees (Apis mellifcra scutellata Lepeletier) on the native California bee fauna. Cavity-nesting, solitary bee species were systematically monitored in wooden trap nests at 6 sites in northern central California from 1990 to 1992. Three sites were in the San Joaquin Valley in wildlife refuges or preserves; 3 were in coastal mountain or Sierran foothill parks or reserves. Differences in frequencies of nesting bees were observed and recorded among sites and habitats through time. A Poisson regression indicated that all explanatory …

Computer Synthesis Of Spectroradiometric Images For Color Imaging Systems Analysis, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild Jan 1998

Computer Synthesis Of Spectroradiometric Images For Color Imaging Systems Analysis, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild

Presentations and other scholarship

A technique to perform full spectral based color calculations through an extension of OpenGL has been created. This method of color computations is more accurate than the standard RGB model that most computer graphics algorithms utilize. By maintaining full wavelength information in color calculations, it is also possible to interactively simulate and display many important color phenomena such as metamerism and fluorescence. This technique is not limited to creating simple images suitable for interactive display, however. Using this extension, it is also possible to synthesize spectroradiometric images of arbitrary spatial and spectral resolution, for use in color imaging system analysis.

Physical Dependence Of The Sensitivity And Room-Temperature Stability Of Auxge1-X Thin Film Resistive Thermometers On Annealing Conditions, Nathanael A. Fortune, Michael J. Graf, Keizo Murata Jan 1998

Physical Dependence Of The Sensitivity And Room-Temperature Stability Of Auxge1-X Thin Film Resistive Thermometers On Annealing Conditions, Nathanael A. Fortune, Michael J. Graf, Keizo Murata

Physics: Faculty Publications

The reported nearly constant temperature sensitivity of appropriately annealed polycrystalline AuxGe1-x thin films at cryogenic temperatures would appear to make them promising materials for low mass, rapid thermal response resistive thermometers, but their adoption has been limited by difficulties in fabrication and uncertainties in annealing. In this work, we present a method of fabrication and annealing which allows control of the two most important parameters for these films: the room-temperature resistivity ρRT and the temperature sensitivity η(T), where η ≡ -d In R/d In T. We find that the dependence of ρRT on total anneal duration t for x≈0.18 is …

Far-Ultraviolet Spectra Of Starburst Galaxies: Stellar Population And The Kinematics Of The Interstellar Medium, Rosa M. Gonzalez Delgado, Claus Leitherer, Timothy Heckman, James D. Lowenthal, Henry C. Ferguson, Carmelle Robert

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The far-ultraviolet spectra of the four starburst galaxies NGC 6090, Mrk 66, Mrk 1267, and IRAS 0833 + 6517 were observed with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope during the Astro-2 mission. Additional data were obtained for IRAS 0833 + 6517 with the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. We analyze the observations in terms of the stellar content and the kinematics of the interstellar medium, and we discuss the implications of these results for the interpretation of the ultraviolet spectra of high-redshift galaxies. Evolutionary synthesis models are used to constrain the star formation history from the absolute ultraviolet …

On The Value Functions Of Some Singular Optimal Control Problems., Jesus Alberto Pascal Jan 1998

On The Value Functions Of Some Singular Optimal Control Problems., Jesus Alberto Pascal

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Infinite horizon singular optimal control problems with control taking values in a closed cone U in Rn lead to a dynamic programming equation of the form: maxF2x,v, v',v'' ,F1x,v,v' =0, forall x∈Q, where Q , the state space of the control problem, is some nonempty connected open subset of Rn , and F1, F2 are continuous real-valued functions on QxR2 and QxR3 respectively, with the coercivity assumption for F 2, that is, the function r&rarrr;F2x,u,p,r is nonincreasing on R . A major concern is to determine how smooth the value function v is across the free boundary of the problem. …

Effect Of Parameter Distributions On Uncertainty Analysis Of Hydrologic Models, C. Thomas Haan, Daniel E. Storm, T. Al-Issa, Sandeep Prabhu, George J. Sabbagh, Dwayne R. Edwards Jan 1998

Effect Of Parameter Distributions On Uncertainty Analysis Of Hydrologic Models, C. Thomas Haan, Daniel E. Storm, T. Al-Issa, Sandeep Prabhu, George J. Sabbagh, Dwayne R. Edwards

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Increasing concern about the accuracy of hydrologic and water quality models has prompted interest in procedures for evaluating the uncertainty associated with these models. If a Monte Carlo simulation is used in an uncertainty analysis, assumptions must be made relative to the probability distributions to assign to the model input parameters. Some have indicated that since these parameters can not be readily determined, uncertainty analysis is of limited value. In this article we have evaluated the impact of parameter distribution assumptions on estimates of model output uncertainty. We conclude that good estimates of the means and variances of the input …

Validating A Vegetative Filter Strip Performance Model, Puneet Srivastava, Thomas A. Costello, Dwayne R. Edwards, James A. Ferguson Jan 1998

Validating A Vegetative Filter Strip Performance Model, Puneet Srivastava, Thomas A. Costello, Dwayne R. Edwards, James A. Ferguson

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Vegetative filter strips (VFS) reduce losses of nutrients, solids, and other materials from land area treated with fertilizers and manures. A number of models are available that simulate nutrient and sediment transport in VFS. While VFS effectiveness is considered to depend on lengths of pollutant source area and VFS areas, few published studies have tried to validate these models using variable pollutant source area and VFS area. The objective of this study was to validate an event-based nutrient transport model (Chaubey et al., 1995) that simulates soluble nutrient transport in VFS. This model links three sub-models: modified Green-Ampt infiltration, non-linear …

Numerical Modeling Of Multi-Species Transport In Soils Under Electric Fields., Wenbing Zheng Jan 1998

Numerical Modeling Of Multi-Species Transport In Soils Under Electric Fields., Wenbing Zheng

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A generalized mathematical model for electrokinetic soil processing is presented for multi-species transport of reactive components under electric fields in two-dimensional geometry, based on the earlier Acar-Alshawabkeh model. In this model, sets of partial differential equations are formulated for the transport of fluid, charge, and species in a saturated soil under coupled hydraulic, electrical, and chemical potentials. Chemical reactions pertaining to sorption, precipitation/dissolution, aqueous phase equilibria, water autoionization, and electrolysis are included in the new model. The boundary conditions corresponding to the mass transport equations are described. A program, EK-SIM (ElectroKinetic Soil Processing SIMulation), has been developed to simulate electrokinetic …

Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula L.) Spread In Iowa, S. C. Huerd, S. E. Taylor

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.), a noxious perennial weed spreading south from the northern Great Plains into Iowa, is considered a threat to Iowa's Prairie preserves because it is an aggressive non-native plant that dominates the landscape through rapid sexual and asexual reproduction. Methods to control leafy spurge include cultural and chemical controls, and biological controls are currently being developed. In 1992 and 1993 we surveyed the extent of leafy spurge spread in Iowa and found 26 of 99 Iowa counties with leafy spurge populations. Iowa's leafy spurge populations are rapidly expanding on untilled lands such as roadsides, especially in …

Perspectives On Iowa's Declining Amphibians And Reptiles, James L. Christiansen Jan 1998

Perspectives On Iowa's Declining Amphibians And Reptiles, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Changes in range and abundance of Iowa's amphibians and reptiles can be deduced by comparing records from recent studies with excellent collections from Iowa by Professor R. M. Bailey made from 1938-1943 in addition to museum records accumulated before 1950. Additional recent data make necessary this updating of a similar study conducted in 1980. The current study finds many of our frogs to be in decline, some in a pattern from north to south, but most as a diffused loss of populations, probably as a result of habitat destruction. The crawfish frog, one of the two frogs considered threatened in …

Carrion Beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) Of Northeastern Iowa: A Comparison Of Baits For Sampling, David R. Coyle, Kirk J. Larsen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Carrion beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) were inventoried over a 8-week period from June into August of 1996 at 10 sites in 4 counties of extreme northeastern Iowa. Carrion preference and relative abundance of carrion beetles were studied by use of non-lethal pitfall traps constructed from large plastic plant pots and baited with aged fish, beef liver, chicken, or piglets. A total of 3,183 carrion beetles were collected, representing 11 different species. The most commonly encountered species of carrion beetles in northeastern Iowa included Necrophila americana (71.5%) and Oiceoptoma novaboracense (18.5%). When comparing baits, chicken and fish attracted the greatest number of …
