The Great Depression Two Kansas Diaries, C. Robert Haywood Jan 1998

The Great Depression Two Kansas Diaries, C. Robert Haywood

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the decade of the 1930s the nation plunged from prosperity and great expectations into a sharp decline that adversely affected a greater percentage of people than any economic crisis before or since. During the Great Depression 25 percent of the nation's work force became unemployed. No state was unaffected, and both cities and farms suffered, although each section of the economy displayed a different set of problems. For most urban dwellers the extent and depth of the crisis was measured by employment. Studs Terkel found the clearest, most succinct definition of the Depression when a once unemployed laborer said: …

Supporting Faculty Development In An Era Of Change, Carol Fulton, Barbara L. Licklider Jan 1998

Supporting Faculty Development In An Era Of Change, Carol Fulton, Barbara L. Licklider

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

A paradigm shift is underway in higher education. Realizing the hoped-for gains of new student-centered approaches will require significantly different approaches to faculty development. This paper describes one such approach to faculty development and how it is currently being used to improve the learning and teaching experience in the College of Engineering at a land grant institution in the Midwest. Considerations for the widespread application of this approach are also offered.

Faculty Development In Technology Applications To University Instruction: An Evaluation, Margie K. Kitano, Bernard J. Dodge, Patrick J. Harrison, Rena B. Lewis Jan 1998

Faculty Development In Technology Applications To University Instruction: An Evaluation, Margie K. Kitano, Bernard J. Dodge, Patrick J. Harrison, Rena B. Lewis

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Progress in integrating new technologies into higher education classrooms has been slow despite emerging evidence on benefits for students when technologies are applied in ways that support teaching and learning. This article describes a program used by a college of education to support faculty applications of technology in instruction and reports results of a formal evaluation following the first year of implementation. The program provided intensive training and follow-up support to a heterogeneous cohort of 14 faculty members and was designed to enhance their ability to integrate technology into their teaching, use a new "smart" classroom facility, and/or develop products …

Review Of Hired Hands: Labour And The Development Of Prairie Agriculture, 1880-1930 By Cecilia Danysk, Joe Cherwinski Jan 1998

Review Of Hired Hands: Labour And The Development Of Prairie Agriculture, 1880-1930 By Cecilia Danysk, Joe Cherwinski

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The argument is a tidy one indeed. By concentrating on the reactions of farm workers to changing labor-capital relations Danysk contends that the tens of thousands of people who came to toil in the farm fields of prairie Canada over half a century can be conveniently divided into two groups. The first, those who worked in agriculture during the homestead stage before World War I, worked primarily to learn agricultural practices and to acquire sufficient capital to apply to their own quarter section once they acquired it. With labor in short supply they were able to control their relationship with …

Outlier Analysis Of Annual Retail Price Inflation: A Cross-Country Study, Wai-Sum Chan Jan 1998

Outlier Analysis Of Annual Retail Price Inflation: A Cross-Country Study, Wai-Sum Chan

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

Wilkie's stochastic investment model and its variants have been increasingly applied by actuaries around the world to actuarial modeling and simulation. This paper performs time series outlier analysis on retail price inflation, which is the driving force of Wilkie's composite model. The data come from four developed countries: the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia. The fit of the model is significantly improved after the adjustment of outliers. The analysis also identifies exogenous events that have intervened in the inflation dynamics. An example is given to demonstrate the importance of outlier analysis on stochastic simulation. Finally, inflation trends …

Stability Of Representative Crediting Rate Scenarios Under Monte Carlo Simulations, Sarah L.M. Christiansen, Kelley Buchacker Jan 1998

Stability Of Representative Crediting Rate Scenarios Under Monte Carlo Simulations, Sarah L.M. Christiansen, Kelley Buchacker

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

We develop a methodology to ensure that a Monte Carlo simulation of the distribution of the primary rates, used for determining an interest crediting rate, is stable regardless of the initial random number seed. We consider the implications of the use of antithetic random normal deviates upon the scenario process and modifications to the candidate list and the choice function within the representative process. It is shown that the use of antithetic random deviates alone does not have a statistically significant effect on our results. The other two modifications (candidate selection algorithm and choice function) are statistically significant. Furthermore, the …

Average-Case Lower Bounds For Noisy Boolean Decision Trees, William Evans, Nicholas Pippenger Jan 1998

Average-Case Lower Bounds For Noisy Boolean Decision Trees, William Evans, Nicholas Pippenger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present a new method for deriving lower bounds to the expected number of queries made by noisy decision trees computing Boolean functions. The new method has the feature that expectations are taken with respect to a uniformly distributed random input, as well as with respect to the random noise, thus yielding stronger lower bounds. It also applies to many more functions than do previous results. The method yields a simple proof of the result (previously established by Reischuk and Schmeltz) that almost all Boolean functions of n arguments require $\Me(n \log n)$ queries, and strengthens this bound from the …

Convergence Of Random Walks On The Circle Generated By An Irrational Rotation, Francis E. Su Jan 1998

Convergence Of Random Walks On The Circle Generated By An Irrational Rotation, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Fix . Consider the random walk on the circle which proceeds by repeatedly rotating points forward or backward, with probability , by an angle . This paper analyzes the rate of convergence of this walk to the uniform distribution under ``discrepancy'' distance. The rate depends on the continued fraction properties of the number . We obtain bounds for rates when is any irrational, and a sharp rate when is a quadratic irrational. In that case the discrepancy falls as (up to constant factors), where is the number of steps in the walk. This is the first example of a sharp …

Design And Design Centers In Engineering Education, Clive L. Dym Jan 1998

Design And Design Centers In Engineering Education, Clive L. Dym

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper is intended to be the opening salvo of the workshop, Computing Futures in Engineering Design (Dym, 1997). Thus, I want to take this privileged moment to ask you to think with me about the role of design in engineering. In particular, I want to reflect upon how design is articulated and how design is taught; about the role of design in engineering education and in the practice of engineering; and about the role that could be played locally and, perhaps, nationally by a center devoted to design education. Because I teach here at Harvey Mudd College (HMC), …

Sorting In Parallel, Ran Libeskind-Hadas Jan 1998

Sorting In Parallel, Ran Libeskind-Hadas

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In 1842, L.F. Menabrea anticipated the benefits of parallel computing in an article that appeared in the Swiss Journal Bibliotheque universelle de Geneve:

When a long series of identical computations is to be performed, such as those required for the formation of numerical tables, the machine can be brought into play so as to give several results at the same time, which will greatly abridge the whole amount of the processes.

Although more than a century passed before Menabrea's vision became a reality, today parallel computers with hundreds and even thousands of processors are used in a broad range …

Tree-Based Multicasting In Wormhole-Routed Irregular Topologies, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Dominic Mazzoni '99, Ranjith Rajagopalan '99 Jan 1998

Tree-Based Multicasting In Wormhole-Routed Irregular Topologies, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Dominic Mazzoni '99, Ranjith Rajagopalan '99

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A deadlock-free tree-based multicast routing algorithm is presented for all direct networks, regardless of interconnection topology. The algorithm delivers a message to any number of destinations using only a single startup phase. In contrast to existing tree-based schemes, this algorithm applies to all interconnection topologies, requires only fixed-sized input buffers that are independent of maximum message length, and uses a single asynchronous flit replication mechanism. The theoretical basis of the technique used here is sufficiently general to develop other tree-based multicasting algorithms for regular and irregular topologies. Simulation results demonstrate that this tree-based algorithm provides a very promising means of …

Physisorbed Co On Ionic Crystals: An Extended Beg Spin-Lattice Model Of Adsorbed Dipolar Molecules, T. E. Burns, Jr Dennison Jan 1998

Physisorbed Co On Ionic Crystals: An Extended Beg Spin-Lattice Model Of Adsorbed Dipolar Molecules, T. E. Burns, Jr Dennison

Journal Articles

The 2D dielectric phases and phase transitions of adsorbed dipolar molecules are studied using a dilute spin-one Ising model. The spin-one formulation assigns a spin Si = ±1 to a (up/down) dipole occupying a lattice site i adsorbed perpendicular to the substrate surface and Si = 0 to unoccupied sites. We relate the mean field expression for the spin-model interaction energy to a more detailed microscopic model involving dipolar, quadrupolar and dispersive interactions beyond nearest neighbor. Analytic solutions in the mean field approximation are discussed for dipole-orientation order-disorder transitions and ferroelectric-to-antiferroelectric transitions as a function of temperature and …

At The End Of Palsgraf, There Is Chaos: An Assessment Of Proximate Cause In Light Of Chaos Theory, Edward S. Adams, Gordon B. Brumwell, James A. Glazier

Articles

Palsgraf articulated the doctrine of proximate cause, necessary to prove the tort of negligence. Palsgraf needs to be reexamined in light of today's understanding of cause and effect. The case concerned a woman (Mrs. Palsgraf) standing on a train platform who was injured by a roof tile that fell as the result of the vibrations caused by the explosion of another passenger's package. Mrs. Palsgraf sued the railway for negligence and prevailed at the trial court level. The New York Court of Appeals reversed the trial court, however, holding that the railway company's actions were not the proximate cause of …

Constructing A Jury That Is Both Impartial And Representative: Utilizing Cumulative Voting In Jury Selection, Edward S. Adams, Christian J. Lane Jan 1998

Constructing A Jury That Is Both Impartial And Representative: Utilizing Cumulative Voting In Jury Selection, Edward S. Adams, Christian J. Lane

Articles

One of the main and ongoing problems plaguing the American jury system has been ensuring that juries in civil and criminal trials are truly representative of the communities in which they serve. Historically, minorities have been disproportionately excluded from jury service. This shortfall results from a combination of factors at each stage of the juror identification process. At the jury pool stage, juror notification methods often fail to identify or reach minorities for tie simple reason that minorities generally are poorer and more transient. At the venire stage, those minorities who actually receive notification report to the courthouse at a …

No Tillage Use For Crop Production In Kentucky Counties In 1997, G. R. Haszler Jan 1998

No Tillage Use For Crop Production In Kentucky Counties In 1997, G. R. Haszler

Soil Science News and Views

Three years ago (1994) and again last year (1996), we reported the status of no-tillage adoption in Kentucky counties. Now, CTIC has published the results for 1997. As before, Kentucky leads the nation in percent of all crops produced under no tillage, but the percentage has slightly decreased from 1996. In 1994, 44% of all crops were produced under no tillage in Kentucky, whereas in 1996, that figure had reached 51% . It dropped to 48% in 1997. The results for 1994, 1996 and 1997 are shown in Table 1. The percentage of major grain crops (corn, soybeans and small …

Molecular Cavity Flow, Donald Greenspan Jan 1998

Molecular Cavity Flow, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Using molecular mechanics, cavity flow is studied in a basin of 4235 water molecules at 15°C. Primary vortices are generated with wallspeeds [see pdf for notation]. The vortex motions agree with experimental results in the large. Fully turbulent flow is generated with wallspeed .V = 3000°A/ps. The mechanisms for primary vortex generation are clearly delineated, as are those for turbulent flow.
