Generalized Ultrametrics, Domains And An Application To Computational Logic, Anthony K. Seda, Pascal Hitzler Jan 1998

Generalized Ultrametrics, Domains And An Application To Computational Logic, Anthony K. Seda, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Fixed points of functions and operators are of fundamental importance in programming language semantics in giving meaning to recursive definitions and to constructs which involve self-reference. It follows therefore that fixed-point theorems are also of fundamental importance in theoretical computer science. Often, order-theoretic arguments are available in which case the well-known Knaster-Tarski theorem can be used to obtain fixed-points. Sometimes, however, analytical arguments are needed involving the Banach contraction mapping theorem as is the case for example in studying concurrency and communicating systems. Situations arise also in computational logic in the presence of negation which force non-monotonicity of the operators …

Natural Resource Management - The Creation Of A New Interdisciplinary Major At The University Of Delaware, Steven E. Hastings, Karen Roth Aniunas Jan 1998

Natural Resource Management - The Creation Of A New Interdisciplinary Major At The University Of Delaware, Steven E. Hastings, Karen Roth Aniunas

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The College of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Delaware has an excellent faculty and physical facility well positioned to educate students for managing the world's natural resources (air, land, water, pants, animals, etc.) into the next century. The college offers a variety of traditional, discipline specific undergraduate majors in five academic departments. A faculty committee worked for more than two years to formulate a new major with an interdisciplinary approach. The result is a new major, Natural Resource Management, which began admitting freshman students in the Fall of 1997. This paper will discuss the creation of the Natural Resource …

Linking Senior Forestry Courses, Larry A. Leefers, Jeremy S. Fried

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Learning has been described as a cumulative process that allows students to build knowledge and skills as they progress through their undergraduate programs. Courses offered at the senior level usually have prerequisites, or require concurrent enrollment in other courses. In the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University, we have recently started offering two senior-level courses concurrently (rather than sequentially): Forest Management and Natural Resources Planning and Policy. In an effort to better integrate our curriculum, we are building linkages between these courses based on content (to reduce redundancy), quantitative analysis, and data sets. Forest Management is taken mostly by …

Teaching Natural Resources 101 As Managing For Social Values And Human-Ecosystem Relationships, James J. Kennedy Jan 1998

Teaching Natural Resources 101 As Managing For Social Values And Human-Ecosystem Relationships, James J. Kennedy

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

From the beginning lecture in their Principles of Natural Resource Management course, College of Natural Resources students at Utah State University (e.g., wildlife/fisheries managers, foresters, geographers, rangeland managers or environmental studies majors) are taught that they will not just manage for ecosystems and not just for people, but for valued relationships between the two (Brunson and Kennedy 1995, Koch and Kennedy 1991). These people-ecosystem relationships generate social values that are communicated to managers by interrelated economic, sociocultural and political/legal systems for society living and (to a lesser extent) for generations of humans and other life-forms yet to be born. How …

Developing Computer Courseware For Forest Management, Marc E. Mcdill Jan 1998

Developing Computer Courseware For Forest Management, Marc E. Mcdill

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Computers are an important tool for managing forests, and they can be used to help teach forestry students about forest management. This paper describes a project to develop computer-based learning models that will be integrated in a comprehensive courseware package suitable for teaching an entire undergraduate forest management course. The forest management courseware will supplement a traditional textbook and take advantage of the things that can be done better with a computer-based approach. While the computer is not likely to rival the textbook in the areas of depth and portability, it can provide an interactive medium to relieve some of …

Lending Landscape Perspective To Natural Resources Education, Wayne L. Myers Jan 1998

Lending Landscape Perspective To Natural Resources Education, Wayne L. Myers

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

One of the more challenging aspects of natural resources education is to impart a landscape perspective to students in the course of professional instruction. This is one of the more subtle but important aspects of ecosystem-oriented forestry. The old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words pertains to this context, as does "water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink." There is abundant technological potential embodied in the several satellite remote sensors continually adding to an already vast warehouse of image data, but casting this digital image raw material in a form for ready viewing by students …

Pbl - Making Natural Resource Education Really Real, Bob Ford Jan 1998

Pbl - Making Natural Resource Education Really Real, Bob Ford

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

A major concern in education today is making the student learning experience relevant to facilitate workforce readiness. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional format which actively engages students in the learning process by requiring them to solve real-life problems (Arambula-Greenfield 1996, Norman and Schmidt 1992). Often times, however, the real-life experiences used are hypothetical and, as a result, simplify the problem to the point that the realness of the problem no longer exists (Nolan and Nolan 1997). Natural resource educators can make PBL activities real by having students work with local park and natural resource agencies to solve natural resource …

Teaching Forest Stand Dynamics Or What Happens When You Thin Your Marigold Plantation, E. R. Wilson, H. W. Mciver, D. C. Malcolm Jan 1998

Teaching Forest Stand Dynamics Or What Happens When You Thin Your Marigold Plantation, E. R. Wilson, H. W. Mciver, D. C. Malcolm

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Teaching forestry students about forest stand dynamics can be an abstract activity. Very quickly concepts are reduced to mathematical formulae, graphs and diagrams, all with relatively complicated explanations. Alternatively, computer simulation and individual tree models can be used to demonstrate important concepts such as the '3/2 Power law' of self thinning. Students can also be taken to visit plantations to talk about practical issues of density management and perhaps produce a thinning prescription. However, no single teaching strategy enables students to have 'hands on' practice at manipulating a real plant population while being able to wait and see the results …

Graphical Surface-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (Svat) Model As A Pedagogical And Research Tool, Robert R. Gillies, Toby N. Carlson, David A.J. Ripley Jan 1998

Graphical Surface-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (Svat) Model As A Pedagogical And Research Tool, Robert R. Gillies, Toby N. Carlson, David A.J. Ripley

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

This paper considers, by example, the use of a Surface-Atmosphere-Vegetation-Transfer (SVAT), Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) model designed as a pedagogical tool. The goal of the computer software and the approach is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of communicating often complex and mathematical based disciplines (e.g., micrometeorology, land surface processes) to the non-specialist interested in studying problems involving interactions between vegetation and the atmosphere and, in the nature of interactions rather than a description of the components. Topics are addressed within a Socratic framework using a scenario system based approach: As an example of this, the interactions between a vegetation …

Jworb - Java Web Object Request Broker For Commodity Software Based Visual Data Ow Metacomputing Programming Environment, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski, Hasan T. Ozdemir

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Programming environments and tools that are simultaneously sustainable, highly functional, robust and easy to use have been hard to come by in the HPDC area. This is partially due to the difficulty in developing sophisticated customized systems for what is relatively small part of the worldwide computing enterprise. As the commodity software becomes naturally distributed with the onset of Web and Intranets, we observe now a new trend in HPDC community [1, 8, 12] to base high performance computing on the modern enterprise computing technologies. .. JWORB is a multi-protocol Java server under development at NPAC, currently capable of handling …

The Occurrence Of Pcbs And Chlorinated Pesticide Contaminants In Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In A Resident Community: Comparison With Age, Gender And Birth Order, Kathleen M. Kuss

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Tissue samples from twenty bottlenose dolphins from a stable, residential community of coastal dolphins in the western Gulf of Mexico were analyzed for toxic PCB congeners and chlorinated pesticides. The tissues analyzed (blubber and melon) were from known individuals in a long-term (27+ y) study that stranded and were recovered for necropsy. Substantial demographic data were available on these individuals and utilized in the analysis of maternal transfer of organochlorines to young.

The male dolphins in this study were shown to accumulate organochlorine contaminants with age. In female dolphins the organochlorine levels were found to decline with age. These …

Intuition And Science In The Race Jurisprudence Of Justice Blackmun, Deborah Malamud Jan 1998

Intuition And Science In The Race Jurisprudence Of Justice Blackmun, Deborah Malamud

Faculty Articles

For our purposes, then a race jurisprudence is not only about voice, but is also, and more fundamentally, about scope, time, focus, method, and transparency. When one looks at the development of Justice Blackmun's race jurisprudence over time, the most central issue is the issue of method. The opinions for which Justice Blackmun is best known are full of a gestalt understanding of how race and racism do their work in American society. But if one looks back to Justice Blackmun's years on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and his opinions in the Supreme Court …

Effects Of The Evolution Of Spacecraft Surfaces On Secondary Electron Emission Andspacecraft Charging, R. E. Davies, John R. Dennison Jan 1998

Effects Of The Evolution Of Spacecraft Surfaces On Secondary Electron Emission Andspacecraft Charging, R. E. Davies, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Spacecraft charging due to the natural plasma environment found in all orbits is known to produce many of the observed spacecraft anomalies and failures. A primary factor in adverse spacecraft charging is the secondary electron emission of differing materials on the spacecraft. Precipitating electrons and ions from the plasma to spacecraft surfaces can result in varying amounts of charge being released, depending on the secondary electron yield of the materials; this can lead to arcing between surfaces. NASA's Space and Environments Effects (SEE) program has recognized the need to improve their current materials database for modeling spacecraft charging and have …

Five physical models of the ionosphere were compared with each other and with data obtained at the Millstone Hill Observatory. Two of the models were self-consistent ionosphere-thermosphere models, while for the other ionospheric models the thermospheric parameters were provided by empirical inputs. The comparisons were restricted to midlatitudes and low geomagnetic activity, but four geophysical cases were considered that covered both the summer and winter solstices at solar maximum and minimum. The original motivation of the study was to determine why several physical models consistently underestimated the F region peak electron density, by up to a factor of 2, in …

Dynamical Effects Of Ionospheric Conductivity On The Formation Of Polar Cap Arcs, L. Zhu, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, D. J. Crain Jan 1998

Dynamical Effects Of Ionospheric Conductivity On The Formation Of Polar Cap Arcs, L. Zhu, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, D. J. Crain

All Physics Faculty Publications

By using a magnetosphere-ionosphere (M-I) coupling model of polar cap arcs [Zhu et al., 1993], a systematic model study of the effects of ionospheric background conductivity on the formation of polar cap arcs has been conducted. The variations of the ionospheric background conductivity in the model study cover typical ionospheric conditions, including solar minimum, solar maximum, winter, and summer. The simulation results clearly indicate that the ionospheric background conductivity can dynamically affect the mesoscale features of polar cap arcs through a nonlinear M-I coupling process associated with the arcs.

Justice Blackmun And The Good Physician: Patients, Populations, And The Paradox Of Medicine, Ann Alpers Jan 1998

Justice Blackmun And The Good Physician: Patients, Populations, And The Paradox Of Medicine, Ann Alpers

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Justice Blackmun made unique contributions to law and medicine. In particular, he had a vision of the relationship between doctors and patients that respected both the professional integrity of the physician and the autonomy of the patient. Examination of several of Justice Blackmun's opinions yields a nuanced view of the complex ties between professional care givers and the patients whom they serve. In particular, the Justice valued maintaining the confidentiality of medical information, respecting the role played by allied health professionals in providing comprehensive care to patients, and ensuring that patients gave informed consent to medical care. Most important, Justice …

Part I of this Note describes digital signatures and considers their different functions. Part I also discusses E-Commerce and the application of digital signatures to E-Commerce. Further, Part I briefly examines the major legal schemes set up by organizations, states, nations, and international bodies. Part II analyzes arguments for and against global digital signature laws in order to facilitate E-Commerce. Part III argues that nations should adopt a global digital signature legal scheme in order …

Potential And Consistency For Semivalues Of Finite Cooperative Tu Games, Irinel C. Dragan Jan 1998

Potential And Consistency For Semivalues Of Finite Cooperative Tu Games, Irinel C. Dragan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

A new axiomatic characterization of the semivalues of finite cooperative n-person games with transferable utilities is given, by using a potential function. The semivalues are proved to be the unique functionals on the space of such games, which are consistent relative to a Hart/Mas Colell type of reduced game and weighted standard for two person games. The potential is also used to prove the validity of a recursive definition of semivalues, as well as the fact that the semivalues are Shapley values of the so called Power Game.

Let's Get It Started: Teaching Teachers How To Implement A Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Jamal A. Cooks

Trotter Review

In today's American schools, many teachers are faced with the problem of keeping African-American students engaged in the lessons taught in pre-K-12 classrooms, a problem which at times leads to low academic performance. According to data presented in the 1994 National Assessment of Educational Progress, 48% and 66% of African-American students scored below the basic competency level in reading and mathematics respectively. With many African-American students being labelled "not proficient" in some academic content areas, a growing achievement gap exists between African-American and European-American students. This gap contributes to fewer African-Americans 1) gaining access to institutions of higher education; 2) …

Introduction, James Jennings

Trotter Review

This is our first annual issue of the Trotter Review. The reader will notice that it is longer than previous issues. A major increase in the number and quality of articles submitted to the Trotter Institute for publication consideration, motivated a change from a bi-annual to an annual edition. We have also decided to formalize a refereed and invitational framework for selecting articles for publication due to the increased number of submissions. As the reader may know, the Trotter Review has utilized a thematic approach to each issue since 1991. This practice will continue since it allows the journal …
