A Modification Of Sugeno Integral Describes Stability And Smoothness Of Fuzzy Control, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Sugeno integral was invented a few decades ago as a natural fuzzy analogue of the classical integral. Sugeno integral has many interesting applications. It is reasonable to expect that it can be used in all application areas where classical integrals are used, and in many such areas it is indeed useful. Surprisingly, however, it has never been used in fuzzy control, although in traditional control, classical integral is one of the main tools.

In this paper, we show that the appropriately modified Sugeno integral is indeed useful for fuzzy control: namely, it provides numerical characterization of stability and smoothness of …

Ordinal Explanation Of The Periodic System Of Chemical Elements, Eric R. Scerri, Vladik Kreinovich, Piotr Wojciechowski, Ronald R. Yager

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Textbooks often claim that quantum mechanics explained the periodic system: namely, the actual configuration of electronic orbits that is responsible for the element's chemical properties can be described as the one that minimizes the total energy, and the energy of each configuration can be computed by using quantum mechanics.

However, a careful analysis of this explanation reveals that, in addition to the basic equations of quantum mechanics, we need some heuristic rules that do not directly follow from quantum physics. One reason why additional heuristics are necessary is that the corresponding numerical equations are extremely difficult to solve, and as …

Estimating Vegetation Structural Effects On Carbon Uptake Using Satellite Data Fusion And Inverse Modeling, Gregory P. Asner, C. Ann Bateson, Jeffrey L. Privette, Nazmi El Saleous, Carol A. Wessman Jan 1998

Estimating Vegetation Structural Effects On Carbon Uptake Using Satellite Data Fusion And Inverse Modeling, Gregory P. Asner, C. Ann Bateson, Jeffrey L. Privette, Nazmi El Saleous, Carol A. Wessman

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Regional analyses of biogeochemical processes can benefit significantly from observational information on land cover, vegetation structure (e.g., leaf area index), and biophysical properties such as fractional PAR absorption. Few remote sensing efforts have provided a suite of plant attributes needed to link vegetation structure to ecosystem function at high spatial resolution. In arid and semiarid ecosystems (e.g., savannas), high spatial heterogeneity of land cover results in significant functional interaction between dominant vegetation types, requiring new approaches to resolve their structural characteristics for regional-scale biogeochemical research. We developed and tested a satellite data fusion and radiative transfer inverse modeling approach to …

Earlj Life Historj And Recruitment Of Black Crappie (Pomoxis Nigromaculatus) In Two South Dakota Waters, K. L. Pope, D. W. Willis Jan 1998

Earlj Life Historj And Recruitment Of Black Crappie (Pomoxis Nigromaculatus) In Two South Dakota Waters, K. L. Pope, D. W. Willis

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We compared the early life history of black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) in Richmond (an impoundment) and Brant (a natural lake) lakes during 1994-1996. We expected variable recruitment (i.e., missing year classes) in the natural lake and more consistent recruitment in the impoundment. Larval black crappie abundance was always higher in Richmond Lake than Brant Lake. Peak abundance of larval black crappie was highest during 1994 in both waters. However, peak larval abundance did not correspond with fall trap-net catch per unit effort (CPUE) of age-0 black crappie, which was highest during 1995. Thus, recruitment of black crappie was …

Population Growth Of Antarctic Fur Seals: Limitation By A Top Predator, The Leopard Seal?, Peter L. Boveng, Lisa M. Hiruki, Michael K. Schwartz, John L. Bengtson

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) in the South Shetland Islands are recovering from 19th-century exploitation more slowly than the main population at South Georgia. To document demographic changes associated with the recovery in the South Shetlands, we monitored fur seal abundance and reproduction in the vicinity of Elephant Island during austral summers from 1986/1987 through 1994/1995. Total births, mean and variance of birth dates, and average daily mortality rates were estimated from daily live pup counts at North Cove (NC) and North Annex (NA) colonies on Seal Island. Sightings of leopard seals (Hydrurga leptonyx) and incidents …

Letter To The Editor: Source Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Usa, Subtidal Sediments, Jeffrey W. Short, Ron A. Heintz

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Recently Page and coworkers concluded that polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) detected in the deeper subtidal sediments of Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA, derive from oil seeps in the northern Gulf of Alaska. Coal was erroneously dismissed as an alternative source of these PAHs, based on the claimed absence of reported coal deposits east of the Bering River coal field. The reference given to support this claim is apparently a geological map of western Prince William Sound. This map is irrelevant. In fact, a substantial coal field lies east of the Bering River field in the Robinson Mountains near Cape Yakataga.

Observed Coupling Of The Mesosphere Inversion Layer To The Thermal Tidal Structure, J W. Meriwether, X Gao, Vincent B. Wickwar, T D. Wilkerson, K C. Beissner, S C. Collins, M E. Hagan Jan 1998

Observed Coupling Of The Mesosphere Inversion Layer To The Thermal Tidal Structure, J W. Meriwether, X Gao, Vincent B. Wickwar, T D. Wilkerson, K C. Beissner, S C. Collins, M E. Hagan

All Physics Faculty Publications

Rayleigh lidar observations of mesosphere temperature profiles obtained from 40 to ∼100 km from Logan, Utah (41.7, 111.8 W, altitude, 1.9 km) over 10 nights in late February, 1995, revealed an interesting development between 60 to 75 km of a winter mesosphere inversion layer with an amplitude of ∼20–30 K and a downward phase progression of ∼1 km/hr. The data also showed two altitude regions exhibiting significant cooling of 10–30 K in extent. These were located below and above the peak of the inversion layer, respectively, at altitudes of ∼50–55 km and ∼70–80 km. When these results were compared with …

New Conformal Gauging And The Electromagnetic Theory Of Weyl, James Thomas Wheeler Jan 1998

New Conformal Gauging And The Electromagnetic Theory Of Weyl, James Thomas Wheeler

All Physics Faculty Publications

A new eight-dimensional conformal gauging solves the auxiliary field problem and eliminates unphysical size change from Weyl’s electromagnetic theory. We derive the Maurer–Cartan structure equations and find the zero curvature solutions for the conformal connection. By showing that every one-particle Hamiltonian generates the structure equations we establish a correspondence between phase space and the eight-dimensional base space, and between the action and the integral of the Weyl vector. Applying the correspondence to generic flat solutions yields the Lorentz force law, the form and gauge dependence of the electromagnetic vector potential and minimal coupling. The dynamics found for these flat solutions …

We present results of photometric monitoring campaigns of G, K and M dwarfs in the Pleiades carried out in 1994, 1995 and 1996. We have determined rotation periods for 18 stars in this cluster. In this paper, we examine the validity of using observables such as X-ray activity and amplitude of photometric variations as indicators of angular momentum loss. We report the discovery of cool, slow rotators with high amplitudes of variation. This contradicts previous conclusions about the use of amplitudes as an alternate diagnostic of the saturation of angular momentum loss. We show that the X-ray data can be …

The Effect Of Pipe Bursting On Nearby Utilities, Pavement, And Structures, Alan Atalah Jan 1998

The Effect Of Pipe Bursting On Nearby Utilities, Pavement, And Structures, Alan Atalah

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation has involved field and analytical studies of ground movements, ground vibrations and other design issues associated with trenchless pipe replacement (or pipe bursting, as it is commonly known). The process is used to replace an existing underground service pipe with a completely new pipe but without the disturbance and cost of excavating a trench from the surface. The process typically involves the insertion of a tool into the existing pipe that has a maximum diameter that is slightly larger than the existing pipe. This tool is used to break the existing pipe into pieces and to displace the …

Skew-Insensitive Parallel Algorithms For Relational Join, Khaled Alsabti, Sanjay Ranka Jan 1998

Skew-Insensitive Parallel Algorithms For Relational Join, Khaled Alsabti, Sanjay Ranka

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

Join is the most important and expensive operation in relational databases. The parallel join operation is very sensitive to the presence of the data skew. In this paper, we present two new parallel join algorithms for coarse grained machines which work optimally in presence of arbitrary amount of data skew. The first algorithm is sort-based and the second is hash-based. Both of these algorithms employ a preprocessing phase (prior to the redistribution phase) to equally partition the work among the processors. The proposed algorithms have been designed for memory resident-data. However, they can be extended to disk resident-data. These algorithms …

The Design And Evaluation Of A Virtual Distributed Computing Environment, Haluk Topcuoglu, Salim Hariri, Dongmin Kim, Yoonhee Kim, Xue Bing

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In this paper we present the Virtual Distributed Computing Environment (VDCE), a metacomputing environment currently being developed at Syracuse University. VDCE provides an efficient web-based approach for developing, evaluating and visualizing large-scale distributed applications that are based on predefined task libraries on diverse platforms. The VDCE task libraries relieve end-users of tedious task implementations and also support reusability. The VDCE software architecture is described in terms of three modules: a) the Application Editor, a user-friendly application development environment that generates the Application Flow Graph (AFG) of an application; b) the Application Scheduler, which provides an efficient task-to-resource mapping of AFG; …

Adaptive Linkage Crossover, Ayed A. Salman, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan Jan 1998

Adaptive Linkage Crossover, Ayed A. Salman, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Problem-specific knowledge is often implemented in search algorithms using heuristics to determine which search paths are to be explored at any given instant. As in other search methods, utilizing this knowledge will more quickly lead a genetic algorithm (GA) towards better results. In many problems, crucial knowledge is not found in individual components, but in the interrelations between those components. For such problems, we develop an interrelation (linkage) based crossover operator that has the advantage of liberating GAs from the constraints imposed by the fixed representations generally chosen for problems. The strength of linkages between components of a chromosomal structure …

Analyzing Patterns In Oriental Carpets: Through Symmetry To The Mind Of The Maker, Carol Bier Jan 1998

Analyzing Patterns In Oriental Carpets: Through Symmetry To The Mind Of The Maker, Carol Bier

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Typically in Oriental carpets, many patterns combine to make the whole. Within an oblong field there is often an overall repeat pattern arbitrarily cut off by borders. Field patterns cover the plane, while border patterns are linear. Patterning -- and color -- in Oriental carpets is carried by the pile (supplementary weft-wrapping) that projects from the surface of a plain weave foundation.

If we take as our definition of pattern the systematic repetition of a unit, distinctions become clear between designs and patterns. While the possibilities for designs are limitless (within the constraints of a medium), the possibilities for repeating …
