Middle School Science Software Curriculum, Robert Paul Pascua

Theses Digitization Project

In order for computer hardware to be utilized to its potential in the middle school classroom, relevant computer software programs must be readily available for teacher and student use. Computer use has increased both in school and home settings and with this increased use comes an increased need for programs suitable for the subject matter taught in the classroom. Current educational research indicates that student performance is increased with the use of software that is directly relevant to the curriculum.

Science software relevant to the middle school science curriculum is available and freely distributable for educational use. The difficulty lies …

Teaching English/Spanish Cognates To Increase Reading Comprehension, Stacey A. Suhm Jan 1998

Teaching English/Spanish Cognates To Increase Reading Comprehension, Stacey A. Suhm

All Graduate Projects

A curriculum has been developed for middle school English as a Second Language (ESL) students to improve their reading comprehension. A review of the literature found that vocabulary is an essential part of reading comprehension and becoming aware of English/Spanish cognates can increase the students' English vocabulary. The curriculum includes a survey to assess a student's knowledge and use of cognates, lesson plans to introduce the concept of cognates, to practice recognizing English/Spanish cognates, and learn the correlation of suffixes between English and Spanish. The curriculum also includes lists of English/Spanish cognates divided by subjects.

The Lunar Surface: Visualizing Changes, Chitra Sivanandam Jan 1998

The Lunar Surface: Visualizing Changes, Chitra Sivanandam

Theses

This research project attempted to create a method of comparison between the imagery from the Lunar Orbiter program (from the mid 1960's) with that of the Clementine mission (of the mid 1990's). The premise behind this research is that if any new surface features developed over the course of the past thirty years, they could be found by doing such a digitial comparison. There are many implication that such research could have on the future. Being that the moon is currently the most thouroughly studied celestial body, the use of doing such a comparison between databases of imagery would prove …

The Physical And Hydrological Characteristics Of A South Coast Sandplain Site : East Howick Site Survey, Robert Anthony Sudmeyer

Resource management technical reports

This Technical Report documents the physical and hydrological characteristics of a farmland site on the Esperance Sandplain. The site was located on 'Belalie Farm East' 110 km east of the town of Esperance in the locality of Howick (AMG 488900, 6277500) The site was typical of the sandplain landsystem which covers 35% (0.72 million ha) of the Esperance Agricultural Region. The farm was cleared over a number of years beginning in the 1970's and an extensive network of windbreaks established.

Resource management technical reports

High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on an 80 ha catchment located 12 km east of Frankland, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 510 mm annual rainfall and 1525 mm annual evaporation. Development of salinity in the catchment is concentrated in the valley floor. Here the groundwater is extremely saline (3000-4000 mS/m) and piezometric levels are between 1 m below and 1 m above the surface.

Inventory Of Sub-Catchments Within The Wilson Inlet Catchment, B Radys

Resource management technical reports

The release of the "Salinity Action Plan for Western Australia' in December 996 highlighted the need for catchment scale planning and coordinated actions to reverse salinity trends.

A separate report has been produced for each major catchment area. Each report contains and inventory of all sub-catchments. with information on area, degradation risks and group activities with each catchment.

Magnetic Control Of Convection In Nonconducting Paramagnetic Fluids, J. Huang, Boyd F. Edwards, D. D. Gray Jan 1998

Magnetic Control Of Convection In Nonconducting Paramagnetic Fluids, J. Huang, Boyd F. Edwards, D. D. Gray

All Physics Faculty Publications

An inhomogeneous magnetic field exerts a magnetic body force on magnetically permeable fluids. A recent experiment [D. Braithwaite, E. Beaugnon, and R. Tournier, Nature (London) 354, 134 (1991)] demonstrates that this force can be used to compensate for gravity and to control convection in a paramagnetic solution of gadolinium nitrate. We provide the theory of magnetically controlled convection in a horizontal paramagnetic fluid layer heated from either above or below. Our theoretical predictions agree with the experiments.

Environmental Assessment Caribou Timber Sale, United States Forest Service Jan 1998

Environmental Assessment Caribou Timber Sale, United States Forest Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

One of the decisions made in the 1985 Bighorn National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (Forest Plan) was that timber sale offerings would be made. The Caribou timber sale was proposed in order to implement that Forest Plan allocation decision. The selection of this sale area was based upon several factors, including: Past forest management decisions and silvicultural prescriptions; the existence of a road system, which will minimize impacts upon wildlife habitat and water quality; the opportunity to change the forested vegetation to improve, or at least maintain within the Forest Plan standard and guidelines and other legal requirements, …

Ruby Canyon/Black Ridge Integrated Resource Management Plan, Record Of Decision And Finding Of No Significant Impact, United States Bureau Of Land Management

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The decision to implement this plan is in conformance with the 1987 Grand Junction Resource Area Resource Management Plan (RMP). Many of the management actions being proposed in the plan constitute an amendment of the RMP. This integrated resource management plan employs a "benefits based management approach" which expands our management focus beyond lands and resources to also address resulting outcomes as improved conditions. Plan implementation for the RCBR ecosystem will be done through an interdisciplinary ad-hoc committee which defines issues and prioritizes management actions. In addition, the vision statement developed by the ad-hoc committee will continue to provide guidance …

Forgotten Accounting Association: The Institute Of Accounts, George C. Romeo, Larissa S. Kyj

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper focuses on the origin and operation of the Institute of Accountants and Bookkeepers established in New York City in 1882, one of the earliest recorded efforts to establish the accounting profession in the United States. This organization is often overlooked or confused with the American Institute of Accountants (the predecessor of the AICPA), so that little has been written about it. Periodicals published during the late 19th and early 20th centuries were used to reconstruct the history and contribution of this Institute. Its contributions were many, including forming and influencing the passage of the first CPA law, developing …

Windbreak Renovation, Craig Stange, Jon Wilson, James R. Brandle, Mike Kuhns Jan 1998

Windbreak Renovation, Craig Stange, Jon Wilson, James R. Brandle, Mike Kuhns

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Windbreaks are an integral part of many farms and ranches and provide critical protection for farmsteads, livestock and crops. Unfortunately, many windbreaks planted in the 1930s and 1940s are losing their effectiveness due to age, poor health or neglect. In some cases, the windbreak no longer has the necessary density to provide winter protection. In other cases, overcrowding may have reduced the health and vigor of the windbreak, or the windbreak may have been invaded by aggressive sod-forming grasses such as smooth brome, reducing tree growth. Whatever the reason, many older windbreaks need renovation.

All windbreaks, even well-designed ones, need …
