Observations Of Meridional Scale Frequency Dependence In The Coupled Tropical Ocean-Atmosphere System, Chunzai Z. Wang, Robert H. Weisberg
Observations Of Meridional Scale Frequency Dependence In The Coupled Tropical Ocean-Atmosphere System, Chunzai Z. Wang, Robert H. Weisberg
Marine Science Faculty Publications
It is generally observed in models of the coupled tropical ocean‐atmosphere system that the meridional scales for oscillations at interannual periods are larger than an oceanic equatorial Rossby radius of deformation. Using 9 years of the high‐resolution optimum interpolation sea surface temperature (SST) product of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), analyses are made on the frequency dependence of the observed meridional scales, with emphasis on the latitudinal structures in the central Pacific at 140°W. On the relatively short intraseasonal and seasonal timescales the SST variations are found to occur over a meridional scale …
Extensions Of The Poisson Summation Formula, A. L. Durán, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Extensions Of The Poisson Summation Formula, A. L. Durán, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Faculty Publications
The classical Poisson summation formula (1.1) and the corresponding distributional formula (1.2) have found extensive applications in various scientific fields. However, they are not universally valid. For instance, if φ(x) is a smooth function, the left-hand side of (1.1) is generally divergent. Even when both sides of (1.1) converge absolutely, they may do so to different numbers. Indeed, in Example 3 we are faced with the embarrassing situation where the series on the left-hand side of (1.1) converges for Res1 while that on the right-hand side converges only for Res<0. Our aim is to extend formulas (1.1) and (1.2) with the help of some new results in distributional theory. For instance, the evaluation of the distribution with zero mean as given by (3.1) at a test function φ(x) yields the relation ∑∞-∞φ(k)-∫∞-∞φ(x)dx. Both the series and the integral in this expression are generally divergent. The concept of the Cesàro limit is then used to obtain the finite difference of these two terms. Thereafter we extend the analysis to higher dimensions. Various innovative examples are presented to illustrate these concepts. © 1998 Academic Press.
Proper And Unit Bitolerance Orders And Graphs, Kenneth P. Bogart, Garth Isaak
Proper And Unit Bitolerance Orders And Graphs, Kenneth P. Bogart, Garth Isaak
Dartmouth Scholarship
We say any order ≺ is a tolerance order on a set of vertices if we may assign to each vertex x an interval Ix of real numbers and a real number tx called a tolerance in such a way that x ≺ y if and only if the overlap of Ix and Iy is less than the minimum of tx and ty and the center of Ix is less than the center of Iy. An order is a bitolerance order if and only if there are intervals Ix and …

Frontal Chromatography Of Proteins. Effect Of Axial Dispersion On Column Performance, G. A. Heeter, Athanasios I. Liapis
Frontal Chromatography Of Proteins. Effect Of Axial Dispersion On Column Performance, G. A. Heeter, Athanasios I. Liapis
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A mathematical model describing the dynamic adsorption of proteins in columns packed with spherical porous adsorbent particles is used to study the effect of axial dispersion on the performance of chromatographic systems. The values of the axial dispersion coefficient, D(L), are estimated from a correlation based on a model describing axial dispersion in packed beds that provides satisfactory results when compared with experiment. Simulations of frontal chromatography in systems including axial dispersion and in systems without axial dispersion are made and compared to determine the effect of axial dispersion on the efficiency of the adsorption process; also, the system parameters …
