A Quantitative Analysis Of The Effects Of Chess Instruction On The Mathematics Achievement Of Southern, Rural, Black Secondary Students, James Paul Smith Apr 1998

A Quantitative Analysis Of The Effects Of Chess Instruction On The Mathematics Achievement Of Southern, Rural, Black Secondary Students, James Paul Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates the effects of chess instruction on the mathematics achievement of a group of southern, rural, black, secondary students. Instruments used included the mathematics section of the CAT (Level 20), Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), Matrix Analogies Test-Short Form (MAT-SF), Guilford-Zimmerman Spatial Visualization Test (SV), and Guilford Zimmerman Spatial Orientation Test (SO). The treatment group, which received 18 weeks of chess instruction, consisted of 11 females and 8 males. The control group was comprised of 10 females and 10 males. All participants were high school juniors or seniors. Analysis of variance of the pre-tests found no significant differences …

Scaling Studies Of Spheromak Formation And Equilibrium, Cameron G. R. Geddes , '97, Thomas W. Kornack , '98, Michael R. Brown Apr 1998

Scaling Studies Of Spheromak Formation And Equilibrium, Cameron G. R. Geddes , '97, Thomas W. Kornack , '98, Michael R. Brown

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Formation and equilibrium studies have been performed on the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX). Spheromaks are formed with a magnetized coaxial plasma gun and equilibrium is established in both small (d(small)=0.16 m) and large (d(large)=3d(small)=0.50 m) copper flux conservers. Using magnetic probe arrays it has been verified that spheromak formation is governed solely by gun physics (in particular the ratio of gun current to flux, mu(0)I(gun)/Phi(gun)) and is independent of the flux conserver dimensions. It has also been verified that equilibrium is well described by the force free condition del xB=lambda B (lambda=constant), particularly early in decay. Departures from the force-free …

Is It Just Me, Or Are There Other Parents And Teachers Out There Confused About Sol Reading Assessments?, William P. Bintz Apr 1998

Is It Just Me, Or Are There Other Parents And Teachers Out There Confused About Sol Reading Assessments?, William P. Bintz

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article describes an incident involving the author, his daughter, and sample items from a Standards of Learning assessment. The author uses this incident to describe his increasing confusion with SOL assessments, especially in the area of reading, and proposes that educators spend less time "testing our kids" with SOL assessments, and more time "testing their theories" so that assessment better reflects recent advances in reading and learning theory.

Item Estimates Under Low-Stakes Conditions: How Should Omits Be Treated?, Christine E. Demars Apr 1998

Item Estimates Under Low-Stakes Conditions: How Should Omits Be Treated?, Christine E. Demars

Department of Graduate Psychology - Faculty Scholarship

Using data from a pilot test of science and math, item difficulties were estimated with a one-parameter model (partial-credit model for the multi-point items). Some items were multiple-choice items, and others were constructed-response items (open-ended). Four sets of estimates were obtained: estimates for males and females, and treating omitted items as incorrect and treating omitted items as not-presented (not-reached). Then, using data from an operational test (high-stakes, for diploma endorsement), the fit of these item estimates was assessed. In science, the fit was quite good under all conditions. In math, the fit was better for girls than for boys, the …

Summary Of Submissions To Fisheries Management Paper No 108 - Issues Affecting Western Australia's Inshore Crab Fishery, Cathy Campbell

Fisheries Management Papers

The summary of submissions is a record of comments offered in respect to the contet of Fisheries Management Paper No. 108 : Issues affecting Western Australia's inshore crab fishery (the Issues Paper) and submitted by groups or individuals who have an interest in inshore crab fishing activity in this State. Investigating The Formation Of Extra-Galactic Radio Jets, Casey R. Watson Apr 1998

Investigating The Formation Of Extra-Galactic Radio Jets, Casey R. Watson

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Jets of collimated particles are among the most intriguing characteristics of active galactic nuclei. In this paper two models of particle interactions in active galactic nuclei are used to explore a possible initial acceleration mechanism of the jets: charge separation. Model I ignores the effects of both collisions and electromagnetic forces and does not predict charge separation. Model II incorporates collisions and electromagnetic interactions, and, although it too predicts no charge separation, it provides a more physically sound model of active nucleus than does Model I.

A Critical Evaluation Of Prof. Roberto Unger's Legal Theory, Pavan K Mamidi Apr 1998

A Critical Evaluation Of Prof. Roberto Unger's Legal Theory, Pavan K Mamidi

Working Papers

There are two general parts to this paper. In the first part I wish to raise some questions relating to Prof. Unger's very general claim about the contingency of knowledge to formative empirical contexts. This part will be my attempt to place in perspective the specific points w.hich I wish to dispute with Prof. Unger. In the second p.art I wish to deal with the balance where I agree with him almost completely. The parts where I beg to differ with Prof. Unger do not prevent me from accepting his call forprogrammatic argument, and yet attend upon those parts of …

Knowledge based industries such as information technologies, financial services and consultancy are increasingly becoming more important for developed as well as developing economies. In India, IT industry has grown at the rate of about fifty percent in domestic as well as export market for the last five years. The domestic software industry had a turn over of rupees 40 billion in 1997-98 and is expected to touch rupees 125 billion by the year 2000 AD. The software export from India in 1997-98 had exceeded US $1 billion and is expected to reach a level of US $ 4 billion by …

Integer Programming, Mendu Rammohan Rao, V Chandru Apr 1998

Integer Programming, Mendu Rammohan Rao, V Chandru

Working Papers

Integer programming is an expressive framework for modeling and solving discrete optimization problems that arise in a variety of contexts in the engineering sciences. Integer programming representations work with implicit algebraic constraints (linear equations and inequalities on integer valued variables) to capture the feasible set of alternatives, and linear objective functions (to minimize or maximize over the feasible set) that specify the criterion for defining optimality. This algebraic approach permits certain natural extensions of the powerful methodologies of linear programming to be brought to bear on combinatorial optimization and on fundamental algorithmic questions in the geometry of numbers.
