Tuple Source Relational Model: A Source-Aware Data Model For Multidatabases, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Yinyan Cao
Tuple Source Relational Model: A Source-Aware Data Model For Multidatabases, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Yinyan Cao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In some integration projects, complete integration of database instances may not be necessary. It may also be too costly and impossible to do so due to poor local data quality and insufficient instance-level knowledge. In this research, we study how multidatabases with global schemas should be represented and manipulated when the data instances from the local databases do not require to be fully integrated. We propose the tuple source (TS) relational model to represent multidatabases under such an integration requirement. This model extends the classical relational model by augmenting every relation with a source attribute to identify the local database …

Methodology And Theory Building In Mis Research, Nancy Lightner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Methodology And Theory Building In Mis Research, Nancy Lightner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper reports on the stage of maturity of MIS research according to the McGrath (1979) model, as evidenced by the theory building occurring in two top MIS research journals. While MIS as a discipline continues to grow, its development depends on establishing a cumulative tradition of good research (Keen 1980). Of the published papers surveyed that are relevant to theory building, 81% of them relate to theory development, while 18% address theory testing. Of the papers involving data collection, more than half use field studies as the methodology. In order to advance MIS as a mature field, it is …

Agriculture reports
This report covers about 94,700 square kilometres of rangelands in the Sandstone-Yalgoo-Paynes Find area of Western Australia. The area lies within 27°S and 30°S latitudes, and 115°30'E and 120°E longitudes and includes the towns of Sandstone, Yalgoo and Paynes Find. The northern, southern, and eastern limits of the survey area are largely defined by the boundaries of the 1:250,000 scale series map sheets. The western limit is the boundary between the pastoral and agricultural area.
Post-Secondary Retention Of The Non-Traditional Student At The Davenport College Career Center, Sheryl Roslund
Post-Secondary Retention Of The Non-Traditional Student At The Davenport College Career Center, Sheryl Roslund
Masters Theses
In order to increase understanding regarding the factors contributing to student attrition at the Davenport College Career Center, a survey was undertaken to determine how those elements over which the school has control impacted its students' decisions to discontinue pursuing their educational goals. The survey of 600 non-returning students asked questions on the following attributes of the college: admissions, advising, academics, support services, and facilities. Survey recipients were divided into two categories: those students who had intended to take a full program of study and those students who had come to college to update their skills with only a few …
Development Of An Operations Research Software Package For Army Divisions, Blane C. Wilson
Development Of An Operations Research Software Package For Army Divisions, Blane C. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
There exists great potential for applying operations research techniques to solve specific problems in the areas of operations, installation support, and training at the Army division level. Because of the operational tempo of today's active-duty and reserve component units, command must focus on accomplishing the daily missions. Also, due their limited knowledge of the field, planners may not be aware of how operations research can be used to enhance planning and operations. Time, training funds, resources, safety, personnel, and equipment are all critical factors in this process. Operations research techniques could be used to improve division-level operations by saving time, …

Holmes And The Romantic Mind, Anne C. Dailey
Holmes And The Romantic Mind, Anne C. Dailey
Duke Law Journal
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. is perhaps best known for his "tough-minded" jurisprudence based on objective standards of reasonableness. Scholars have traditionally understood Holmes's jurisprudential outlook as fundamentally behavioristic. Professor Dailey challenges that understanding, revealing the importance of Romantic psychology in Holmes's major writings. His outlook, she argues, was shaped by his belief in unconscious motivations, imagination, irrationality and instinctual drives. Rather than simply characterize Holmes as a "Romantic," Professor Dailey draws out the conflict in his thought, illuminating his struggle to develop an empirical approach to law that could also account for the depth and complexity of human nature.

Translational Shape Invariance And The Inherent Potential Algebra, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jeffrey Mallow, Uday P. Sukhatne
Translational Shape Invariance And The Inherent Potential Algebra, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jeffrey Mallow, Uday P. Sukhatne
Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
For all quantum-mechanical potentials that are known to be exactly solvable, there are two different, and seemingly independent methods of solution. The first approach is the potential algebra of symmetry groups; the second is supersymmetric quantum mechanics, applied to shape-invariant potentials, which comprise the set of known exactly solvable potentials. Using the underlying algebraic structures of Natanzon potentials, of which the translational shape-invariant potentials are a special subset, we demonstrate the equivalence of the two methods of solution. In addition, we show that, while the algebra for the general Natanzon potential is so(2,2), the subgroup so(2,1) suffices for the shape …

Winter Movements And Habitat Use Of Northern Saw-Whet Owls At Assateague Island, Maryland, John Beaudry Churchill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ten Northern Saw-whet Owls were radio-tracked over two winters (1996 and 1997) at Assateague Island, Maryland. I used the fixed kernel method to calculate home range estimates for seven owls. Ninety-five percent home range sizes averaged 122.9 ha (range from 39.7--261.9 ha) but varied in size and shape. I also calculated adaptive kernel, harmonic mean, and minimum convex polygon home ranges for comparison of these methods. Habitat composition in 30% home ranges was compared with 95% home ranges and 30% and 95% home ranges were each compared with composition of the entire study area using compositional analysis.;Roost site characteristics were …
Development And Validation Of A Modular Hybrid Electric Vehicle Simulation Model, William Frederick Kellermeyer Iii
Development And Validation Of A Modular Hybrid Electric Vehicle Simulation Model, William Frederick Kellermeyer Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
To attempt to bring rigor and analysis to the design process, accurate simulation programs are crucial. Most hybrid electric vehicle hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) simulation programs are written for very specific component configurations and only allow changes in component sizes. These programs prove helpful only if one designs a component configuration similar to the one already simulated. A modular based program such as the one developed here allows simpler reconfiguration of the components for an accurate simulation of almost any component configuration design. This HEV simulation program allows for simulation of all three types of hybrids, with several engine types …
Two-Stroke Linear Engine, Subhash Nandkumar
Two-Stroke Linear Engine, Subhash Nandkumar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Linear, crankless, internal combustion engines may find application in the generation of electrical power without the need to convert linear to rotary motion. The elimination of the connecting rod and crankshaft can improve the efficiency of the engine significantly and the reduced weight and cost are added advantages. A linear, crankless, internal combustion engine prototype has been developed for electrical power generation in combination with a linear alternator. The operation of this engine is distinct from that of a conventional slider-crank mechanism engine, insofar as the motion of the two horizontally opposed pistons is not externally constrained. A two-stroke engine …
Effects Of Celeration Rate On Behavioral Fluency, Kevin J. Munson
Effects Of Celeration Rate On Behavioral Fluency, Kevin J. Munson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In precision teaching, it has been argued that learning should continue until responding is fluent (i.e., it can be performed accurately and rapidly in the presence of distracting stimuli, even after a delay since its acquisition). Furthermore, it has been argued that the speed with which learners achieve fluency (i.e., celeration) also is important. The purpose of the present experiments was to test those propositions. Subjects read binary numbers on a computer screen, and spoke the decimal equivalent of those numbers into voice-recognition equipment. In Experiment 1, responding was reinforced with money arranged on VI schedules for correct responses with …
Velocity Profile In Confined Elliptic Fractures, Stephen Ronald Pack Jr.
Velocity Profile In Confined Elliptic Fractures, Stephen Ronald Pack Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The primary objective of this research is to determine the friction inside a smooth fracture and to incorporate the effect of friction on a fluid transient inside a tapered-elliptical-confined fracture. In order to do so, the non-uniform velocity profile in an elliptic fracture with laminar flow of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids was calculated. A transient flow computer program is presented using the method of characteristics, to show the frictional effects on acoustic damping. However for flow inside a hydraulic fracture, the 3D velocity profile is highly non-uniform, and the use of Vav creates an error as Vmax >> Vav. The …
Prediction Of Turbulent Mixing At The Interface Of Density Stratified, Shear Flows Using Cfd, Matthew Robert Umbel
Prediction Of Turbulent Mixing At The Interface Of Density Stratified, Shear Flows Using Cfd, Matthew Robert Umbel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Numerical simulations were performed involving stratified, shear flows that have been investigated experimentally. One set of simulations dealt with a homogeneous shear flow involving miscible fluids. The other set of simulations dealt with a developing shear layer involving immiscible fluids. The re-fueling of a compensated fuel/ballast tank, which is partially characterized by a shear layer, was also simulated. In all the simulations a single fluid, scalar transport multiphase model and the k-epsilon turbulence model were used. In the simulations involving miscible fluids an interfacial thickness relationship given by delta/H∼(Ri*)--2.1 and an entrainment relationship given by E∼(Ri*)--1.1 were predicted. These relationships …
Pseudospectral Techniques For Non -Smooth Evolutionary Problems, Chris Palmer Guenther
Pseudospectral Techniques For Non -Smooth Evolutionary Problems, Chris Palmer Guenther
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A pseudospectral approach is used to solve non-smooth evolutionary problems using Fourier collocation and Chebyshev collocation. It is well known that pseudospectral methods for smooth problems can offer superior accuracy over finite difference and finite element methods.;This paper explores the use of pseudospectral methods for non-smooth evolutionary problems in the area of hyperbolic heat transfer. Boundary and initial conditions are considered which cause instantaneous jumps, in the temperature and flux, prior to the propagation of a thermal wave into the medium. There is a considerable amount of literature that has investigated hyperbolic heat transfer under similar conditions, the common problems …
Design Analysis Of Single-Span Advanced Composite Deck-And-Stringer Bridge Systems, Brian James Brown
Design Analysis Of Single-Span Advanced Composite Deck-And-Stringer Bridge Systems, Brian James Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The advantages of advanced composite materials (ACM) over conventional materials motivate their use in highway bridges for rehabilitation and replacement of structures. However, the complexity of the composites has created a need for simplified design analysis procedures that account for both the geometry and material properties of ACM members and systems.;An analytical/experimental study of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composite bridges consisting of cellular box decks and wide-flange I-beams as stringers is presented. The design analysis covers: (1) ply stiffnesses and strengths; (2) laminate engineering stiffnesses; (3) apparent stiffness properties for composite decks; and (4) stringer stiffness properties. Finite element modeling is …
Fault-Injection Through Model Checking Via Naive Assumptions About State Machine Synchrony Semantics, Sabina Joseph
Fault-Injection Through Model Checking Via Naive Assumptions About State Machine Synchrony Semantics, Sabina Joseph
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Software behavior can be defined as the action or reaction of software to external and/or internal conditions. Software behavior is an important characteristic in determining software quality. Fault-injection is a method to assess software quality through its' behavior. Our research involves a fault-injection process combined with model checking. We introduce a concept of "naive assumptions" which exploits the assumptions of execution order, synchrony and fairness. "Naive assumptions" are applied to inject faults into our models. We use linear temporal logic to examine the model for anomalous behaviors. This method shows us the benefits of using fault-injection and model checking and …
Determination And Analysis Of Natural Gas Vehicle Tailpipe Emissions Based On Continuous Cvs Measurement, Jingang Fu
Determination And Analysis Of Natural Gas Vehicle Tailpipe Emissions Based On Continuous Cvs Measurement, Jingang Fu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Code of Federal Regulations Title 40 (CFR-40) specified a formula for calculating constant Dilution Factor (DF) to account for background pollutants in Constant Volume Sampler (CVS) emissions measurement system. However, it is recognized that the DF is dynamically changing due to the CVS mechanism. Based on the continuous measurement data obtained from natural gas vehicle emissions testing, a new approach was used in this study to calculate instantaneous DF of the CVS system during the test cycle. Using the instantaneous DF improves the accuracy of mass emission measurements, especially when the exhaust pollutant concentrations were approaching that in the ambient …
Perturbation Studies Of Excitable Media, Lisa Elizabeth Seagraves
Perturbation Studies Of Excitable Media, Lisa Elizabeth Seagraves
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) based systems are probably the most often studied polymer gels due to their dramatic change in volume, swelling and deswelling. Since this system has the best response to pH between 4 and 7, the ferrocyanide-iodate-sulfite (FIS) reaction, which exhibits pH oscillations between 4 and 7.5 in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR), is a good candidate for studies of oscillatory gel systems.;This work also focused on two dynamical phenomena in the ruthenium catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. One is self-organized criticality and the other is periodic forcing and how they can be studied with the BZ reaction. Self-organized criticality …

The study compared the effectiveness three computerized training methods with respect to behavioral outcomes correlated with fluency. Subjects were trained to translate binary numbers into decimal numbers. Responses were made orally with the use of voice recognition software. One training method presented 50 stimuli on a computer monitor at a time (No ITIs). The other two methods (0s and 1.5s ITIs) presented stimuli separately on the monitor using discrete trials. Inter trial intervals were manipulated for the latter training methods. Results showed that all subjects achieved fluent performance on the training task. Subjects reached rate criterion faster and with less …

This study defines the components of a middle school history curriculum based on a theory of learning consistent with the use of cognitive tools and the tenets of constructivism. Utilizing a comparative analysis of learning theories encompassing developmental and constructivist beliefs and their influence on appropriate instructional design, the research addresses the necessary pairing of instructional planning and learning theory. Additionally, an examination of linguistic tools and their relationship to cultural development and distinctive kinds of comprehension, as well as specifics of the various learning stages, preferences, and skills are used to provide a rationale. This analysis is employed in …
Outline And Nearly Outline Triple Systems Of Even Index, Michael Neill Ferencak
Outline And Nearly Outline Triple Systems Of Even Index, Michael Neill Ferencak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The main result of this work describes a completely novel structural result for (v, 3, lambda)-designs in the case when lambda is even. Such designs are known as triple systems. Given a finite collection of n elements, a triple system of order n and index lambda is a collection of subsets of size three chosen from the given set with the property that each distinct pair of elements from the set occurs in exactly lambda of the triples. It is well known for what values of n and lambda such systems exist. A partial triple system of order n and …
Generalized Edge Connectivity In Graphs, Kamal P. Hennayake
Generalized Edge Connectivity In Graphs, Kamal P. Hennayake
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The edge-connectivity l of a connected graph is the minimum number of edges whose deletion produces a graph with two components. For an integer l > 1, the l-edge connectivity of a graph with | V| ≥ l, denoted by l l, is the smallest number of edges whose removal results in a graph with l components. The strength of G, denoted by l&d1; (G), is the maximum value of l (H), where H runs over all subgraphs of G. In this dissertation we study lower bounds of l l and optimal graphs that reach the lower bound. Former results in …
