Mathematical Model Of Paper Discoloration By Ink Particles, Zbigniew W. Slotwinski
Mathematical Model Of Paper Discoloration By Ink Particles, Zbigniew W. Slotwinski
Masters Theses
The goal of this experiment is to investigate how changes in the size and number of ink particles will affect the final brightness of the filter pad.
It was assumed that any differences in brightness of the used Millipore filters were due to change in the average particle size, given the same mass of ink solids on each filter. However, such simplified interpretation of image analysis proved to be inadequate to solve this complex problem.
The correlation between the particle area, number of particles, and brightness drop was established using an algorithm based on the particle area and the square …

Effect Of Ammonia Flow Rate On Impurity Incorporation And Material Properties Of Si-Doped Gan Epitaxial Films Grown By Reactive Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Wook Kim, A. E. Botchkarev, H. Morkoç, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look, David J. Smith
Physics Faculty Publications
Effect of ammonia flow rate on the impurity incorporation and material properties of Si-doped GaN films grown by reactive molecular beam epitaxy (RMBE) process is discussed. It appears that the ammonia flow rate has a marginal effect on the incorporation of impurities into the Si-doped GaN films except there was a little decrease in O and Si with increasing ammonia flow rate when the Si concentration in the film is higher than 1018 cm−3. Electron Hall mobility of Si-doped GaN films grown by RMBE varies with ammonia flow rate used during film growth. From deep level transient …

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is present in ascites from patients with ovarian cancer. It stimulates calcium release and growth of ovarian cancer cells bothin vitroandin vivo.Recently, we found that LPA levels were significantly elevated in plasma from patients with ovarian cancer and other gynecological cancers. In contrast, LPA levels were not elevated in patients with breast cancer and leukemias. In view of this, we investigated whether gynecological cancer cells could produce LPA. LPA was extracted from the supernatant of cells culturedin vitroand purified by thin layer chromatography. After hydrolysis and transmethylation, the fatty acid derivatives were analyzed by gas chromatography. We …

U.S. Catholic Schools And The Religious Who Served In Them: The Struggle To Continue The Tradition In The Post-Vatican Ii Era, Richard M. Jacobs
Journal of Catholic Education
This last in a series of three articles surveying the contributions of the religious to U.S. Catholic schooling focuses upon these contributions during the decades following the close of the Second Vatican Council. In an era when control of Catholic schooling was in transition from the hands of the religious to their lay collaborators, these women and men extended the legacy of their forebears by continuing to give form to the mission and purpose of U.S. Catholic schooling””namely, what it means to be an American Catholic””for the youth of the post-Vatican II era. These young women and men will provide …

The Upper Interval Topology, Property M, And Compactness, Jimmie Lawson
The Upper Interval Topology, Property M, And Compactness, Jimmie Lawson
Faculty Publications
The use of intrinsic topology such as interval topology and order topology that were typically symmetric was discussed. The theory of continuous lattices provided strong motivation for the consideration of such topologies such as the Scott topology or the hull-kernel topology which were not symmetric. Another approach to the study of topology on ordered structures was to begin with a set X equipped both with a partial order ≤ and a topology. The results show that these orders were called as closed order and the resulting ordered topological space was called as pospace, when the assumption was satisfied.
The Identification Of Domains And Competencies For Community Practice Occupational Therapy, Lisa Anne Werner
The Identification Of Domains And Competencies For Community Practice Occupational Therapy, Lisa Anne Werner
Masters Theses
Literature shows evidence of a shift in occupational therapy from traditional institutional settings to community-based settings. As increasing numbers of new and expert occupational therapists enter community-based practice, the need for competency identification for practice, education, and reimbursement becomes paramount. This qualitative research study sought to identify domains and competencies of community-based occupational therapy practice by interviewing three expert occupational therapists using the critical incident method in which each therapist described one therapeutic intervention with a client. This method, as seen in nursing studies (Benner, 1982, 1984), serves to elicit competencies embedded in expert practice. Thirty-nine competencies were described in …

Principal Component Mapping Applied To Raman Microspectroscopy Of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites, C. M. Stellman, K. S. Booksh, A. R. Muroski, M. P. Nelson, Michael L. Myrick
Faculty Publications
We describe the development and implementation of a spectroscopic Raman imaging system using Principal Component data analysis. Raman microspectroscopy followed by multivariate data analysis and principal component mapping has been used to investigate the spatial variations of chemical and physical properties at interfaces in glass-reinforced composites on the micrometer scale. A protocol for monitoring chemical and physical variances via multivariate statistics has been developed and a preliminary study of a "real world" glass-reinforced composite is presented. It is demonstrated that multivariate Raman imaging is more precisely interpretable than traditional univariate methods and that by appropriately choosing distinct spectral regions (such …

Improving The Writing Skills Of At-Risk Students Through The Use Of Writing Across The Curriculum And Writing Process Instruction, Theresa A. Dean-Rumsey
Masters Theses
A plan for improving the writing skills of at-risk students was developed and implemented. Subjects were fifteen seventh-grade Title I students who demonstrated weak writing skills. Evidence for the existence of the problem included MEAP test scores and teacher observations. A review of research on writing pointed to the following solutions to the problem: increasing students’ experiences with writing by implementing writing across the curriculum, improving students’ knowledge and use of the writing process, and direct instruction in writing strategies and techniques. Results of the post-test did not indicate a significant improvement in writing had occurred as a result of …
Semi-Automated Modeling Approaches To Route Selection In Gis, Binfei Chen
Semi-Automated Modeling Approaches To Route Selection In Gis, Binfei Chen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As an alternative to traditional graphical intuitive approaches (GIA), a semi-automated modeling approach (SMA) can more efficiently identify linear routes by using powerful iterative and automated methods. In this research, two case studies were investigated to examine critical issues relating to the accuracy and effectiveness of raster-defined algorithmic approaches to linear route location. The results illustrate that different shortest-path algorithms do not necessarily result in markedly different linear routes. However, differing results can occur when using different neighboring-cell links in the cell-based route network construction. Cell-based algorithmic approaches in both Arc/Info and IDRISI software generate very similar results which are …

Generalizations Of Colorability And Connectivity Of Graphs, Xiankun Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Let G = (V, E) be a graph and A a non-trivial Abelian group, and let F( G, A) denote the set of all functions f : E (G) → A. Denote by D an orientation of E( G). Then G is A-colorable if and only if for every f ∈ F(G, A) there exists an A-coloring c: V( G) → A such that for every e = (x, y) ∈ E(G) (assumed to be directed from x to y), c( x)--c(y) ≠ f(e). We define the group chromatic number of c1 (G) to be the minimum number m for …

A synergistic algorithm for producing global leaf area index and fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation fields from canopy reflectance data measured by MODIS (moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer) and MISR (multiangle imaging spectroradiometer) instruments aboard the EOS-AM 1 platform is described here. The proposed algorithm is based on a three-dimensional formulation of the radiative transfer process in vegetation canopies. It allows the use of information provided by MODIS (single angle and up to 7 shortwave spectral bands) and MISR (nine angles and four shortwave spectral bands) instruments within one algorithm. By accounting features specific to the problem of radiative transfer …

Preference For Top Managerial Positions As A Result Of Utility-Maximization Behavior Under Religious Moral Prescriptions, Corneliu Munteanu
Student Work
The analysis described in this study is focused on the influence of religious ethics over individuals' tendency to seek top-managerial positions in their professional activity. The analysis assumes agents maximize utility. According to religious doctrines, afterlife salvation is a goal which could be accomplished only by following certain prescribed behavioural norms. While salvation can be considered as being an identical goal for most religions, the- way of pursuing it differs from one religion to another. This difference in means of attaining salvation reflects on various aspects of human behaviour. One of these aspects is the professional conduct of people engaging …

Adaptive Channel Equalization Techniques, Saied Razavilar
Masters Theses
Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) is a characteristic of band-limited communication channels that can severely degrade the digital communication system performance if not treated properly. Channel equalization techniques may be used to mitigate the effects of ISI in the system, thereby improving the system capacity and performance. In this thesis, the problem of Inter Symbol Interference caused by the nonlinear characteristics of band limited communication channels and adaptive equalization techniques to combat the effects of ISI are discussed. First, the analysis of ISI in a band limited communication channel using a concrete theoretical framework is presented. Next, various adaptive equalization techniques …
