Some Comments On Assessment In U.S. Education, Robert Stake
Some Comments On Assessment In U.S. Education, Robert Stake
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
We do not know much about what assessment has accomplished but we know it has not brought about the reform of American Education. The costs and benefits of large scale mandated achievement testing are too complex to be persuasively reported. Therefore, educational policy needs to be based more on deliberated interpretations of assessment, experience, and ideology. Evaluation of assessment consequences, however inconclusive, has an important role to play in the deliberations.

Statistics Of Active Galactic Nuclei In Rich Clusters Revisited, M. Way, R. Flores, H. Quintana
Statistics Of Active Galactic Nuclei In Rich Clusters Revisited, M. Way, R. Flores, H. Quintana
Physics Faculty Works
Using the spectrophotometry of a large sample of galaxies in 19 Abell clusters, we have selected 42 candidate active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using the criteria used by Dressler and coworkers in their analysis of the statistics of 22 AGNs in 14 rich cluster fields, which are based on the equivalent width of [O II] 3727 Å, Hβ, and [O III] 5007 Å emission. We have then discriminated AGNs from H II region-like galaxies (hereafter H II galaxies) in the manner developed by Veilleux & Osterbrock using the additional information provided by Hα and [N II] 6583 Å or Hα and …

The large stereoregular phenyltrimethylsiloxysiloxane macrocycles of general formula [PhSi(OSiMe3)O]n (n=6 and 12) have been selectively obtained with high yields by trimethylsilylation of cage-like oligophenylmetallasiloxanes (OPMS) which we described earlier. The compounds 3 (n=6) and 4 (n=12) have been characterized by NMR-spectroscopy method and by single crystal X-ray analysis. This investigation showed unambiguously that the siloxane macrocycles keep their size and configuration (the same as in the initial OPMS) during the trimethylsilylation. Thus a synthetic route for obtaining large stereoregular siloxane macrocycles has been developed.

Selective Determination Of Methylmercury By Flow-Injection Fast-Scan Voltammetry, Rebecca Lai, Eva Huang, Feimeng Zhou, David O. Wipf
Selective Determination Of Methylmercury By Flow-Injection Fast-Scan Voltammetry, Rebecca Lai, Eva Huang, Feimeng Zhou, David O. Wipf
Rebecca Lai Publications
A simple flow-injection system, suitable for solution flow rates at microliters-per-minute, has been combined with fast-scan voltammetry for selective determination of methylmercury. A thin Hg film was formed at a Pt microelectrode prior to the measurement. Detection of methylmercury is carried out by measuring the oxidation of methylmercury radicals that have been generated at the Hg microelectrode. At slow scan rates, the electrogenerated methylmercury radicals undergo a follow-up dimerization reaction to form dimethyldimercury (ErCi2 mechanism). At fast scan rates, it was found that methylmercury radicals can be quantitatively reoxidized (reversible electron-transfer). Optimization of the experimental conditions …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
The reaction of 3-aryl-2-cyano-5,5-bis(methylthio)penta-2,4-dienenitrile, (1), with (L)-(-)-2-hydroxymethylpyrrolidine, (2), gave two types of product, the normal substitution product, (3), and a pyridine derivative, (4). The structures of two representative examples, 2-phenyl-3-(5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro1H,3H-pyrrolo[1,2-c]oxazol-3-ylidene)-1-propene-1,1-dicarbonitrile, (3a), as its hemibenzene solvate, C17H14N3O.0.5C6H6, and 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,6-bis(methylthio)pyridine-3-carbonitrile, (4b), C15H14N2OS2, have been unambiguously established by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The molecular packing of (4b) involves loosly held dimers with S1...S1' distances of 3.424 (1) Å.

Spiral Morphology-Dependent Resonances In An Optical Fiber: Effects Of Fiber Tilt And Focused Gaussian Beam Illumination, Andrew W. Poon, Richard K. Chang, James A. Lock
Physics Faculty Publications
Spiral morphology-dependent resonances have been observed in a tilted optical fiber. The polarization-preserving and the cross-polarized elastic-scattering spectra for plane-wave illumination show that the wavelengths of the resonances are blueshifted quadratically as the fiber tilt angle increases. When a focused Gaussian beam illuminates the fiber at its edge, the resonances are blueshifted and broadened as the detector is offset from the scattering plane with the maximum scattering intensity. The blueshift with focused beam illumination is also a consequence of the spiral resonances. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.
Consequences Of Assessment: What Is The Evidence?, William A. Mehrens
Consequences Of Assessment: What Is The Evidence?, William A. Mehrens
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Attention is here directed toward the prevalence of large scale assessments (focusing primarily on state assessments). I examine the purposes of these assessment programs; enumerate both potential dangers and benefits of such assessments; investigate what the research evidence says about assessment consequences (including a discussion of the quality of the evidence); discuss how to evaluate whether the consequences are good or bad; present some ideas about what variables may influence the probabilities for good or bad consequences; and present some tentative conclusions about the whole issue of the consequences of assessment and the amount of evidence available and needed.

Usability Of Visual Basic For Parallel Programming On Windows Nt, James Scott Barker
Usability Of Visual Basic For Parallel Programming On Windows Nt, James Scott Barker
Dissertations and Theses
Visual Basic is a very popular language. Many hardware engineers have learned Visual Basic because of its simplicity, but have never learned C or C++. Furthermore, people are choosing not to use C or C++ for business software development, but instead are embracing languages such as Visual Basic. Since one of the goals of the parallel programming community has been to encourage more widespread use of parallelism in software, this body of programming talent needs to be addressed.
This thesis intends to prove that Visual Basic can be used for parallel programming, that using it is at least as easy …
Maximally Disjoint Solutions Of The Set Covering Problem, David J. Rader, Peter L. Hammer
Maximally Disjoint Solutions Of The Set Covering Problem, David J. Rader, Peter L. Hammer
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
This paper is concerned with finding two solutions of a set covering problem that have a minimum number of variables in common. We show that this problem is NP complete, even in the case where we are only interested in completely disjoint solutions. We describe three heuristic methods based on the standard greedy algorithm for set covering problems. Two of these algorithms find the solutions sequentially, while the third finds them simultaneously. A local search method for reducing the overlap of the two given solutions is then described. This method involves the solution of a reduced set covering problem. Finally, …

Observation Of B+→ΩK+ And Search For Related B Decays Modes, T. Bergfeld, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We have searched for two-body charmless decays of B mesons to purely hadronic exclusive final states including ω or φ mesons using data collected with the CLEO II detector. With this sample of 6.6 X 106 B mesons we observe a signal for the ωK+ final state, and measure a branching fraction of Ɓ(B+→ωK+) = (1.5-0.6+0.7 ± 0.2) X 10-5. We also observe some evidence for the φK* final state, and upper limits are given for 22 other decay modes. These results provide the opportunity …

The Extraction And Coordination Chemistry Of An Organophosphorus Ligand: The Synthesis And Characterization Of Organophosphorus Ligands And Dendrimers Using The Michael-Type Addition, Evelyn M. Bond
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
In chapter 1, the liquid/ liquid extraction of americium (III) from nitric and hydrochloric acid solutions with chloroform solutions of 2, 6 bis[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]pyridine N, P, P' trioxide (ENOPOPO) is examined. Americium (III) is efficiently extracted from aqueous solutions at high nitric acid concentrations (DAm > 3000 at 6 M HNO3) and can be totally back extracted from the organic phrase at 0.01 M HNO3. The ligand dependency data suggest that two ligand molecules are coordinated to the americium. From hydrochloric acid solutions, ENPOPO exhibits modest extraction ability for americium (III) (DAm = 2.2 at 5 M …

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Motivated by the shape invariance condition in supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we develop an algebraic framework for shape invariant Hamiltonians with a general change of parameters. This approach involves nonlinear generalizations of Lie algebras. Our work extends previous results showing the equivalence of shape invariant potentials involving translational change of parameters with standard SO (2,1) potential algebra for Natanzon type potentials.
