Mapped Karst Ground-Water Basins In The Beaver Dam 30 X 60 Minute Quadrangle, Joseph A. Ray, James C. Currens

Map and Chart--KGS

This map shows karst ground-water basins in the Beaver Dam quadrangle, determined primarily by ground-water tracer studies. It can be used to quickly identify the ground-water basins and springs to which a site may drain. Major springs and the relative size of their catchment areas can be evaluated for potential as water supplies. The map also serves as a geographic index to literature on karst ground water in the area.

Direct Voltammetric Observation Of Redox Driven Changes In Axial Coordination And Intramolecular Rearrangement Of The Phenylalanine-82-Histidine Variant Of Yeast Iso-1-Cytochrome C, Benjamin A. Feinberg, Xiangjun Liu, Michael D. Ryan, Abel Schejter, Chongyao Zhang, Emanuel Margoliash Sep 1998

Ryan, Abel Schejter, Chongyao Zhang, Emanuel Margoliash

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Direct square-wave and cyclic voltammetric electrochemical examination of the yeast iso-1-cytochrome c Phe82His/Cys102Ser variant revealed the intricacies of redox driven changes in axial coordination, concomitant with intramolecular rearrangement. Electrochemical methods are ideally suited for such a redox study, since they provide a direct and quantitative visualization of specific dynamic events. For the iso-1-cytochrome c Phe82His/Cys102Ser variant, square-wave voltammetry showed that the primary species in the reduced state is the Met80-Fe2+-His18 coordination form, while in the oxidized state the His82-Fe3+-His18 form predominates. The addition or removal of an electron to the …

Gps Measurement Of Surface Deformation Around Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat From October 1995 To July 1996, Glen S. Mattioli, Timothy H. Dixon, Frederic Farina, Ellen S. Howell, Pamela E. Jansma, Alan L. Smith Sep 1998

Gps Measurement Of Surface Deformation Around Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat From October 1995 To July 1996, Glen S. Mattioli, Timothy H. Dixon, Frederic Farina, Ellen S. Howell, Pamela E. Jansma, Alan L. Smith

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Global Positioning System geodesy was used to measure surface deformation on Soufriere Hills volcano, Montserrat from October 6, 1995 to July 1, 1997 during initial dome growth and gravitational collapse. Our data from this period show non-axially symmetric horizontal displacements, and decreasing subsidence as a function of radial distance from the former topographic high of the volcanic edifice. Forward modeling suggests that surface deformation is caused by a shallow vertical dike (< 3 km), which expanded approximately 1 m, coupled with a deflating Mogi source at about 6 km depth. These inferred source parameters are in good agreement with independent observations of regional dike widths and preemption magma storage depth.

Polarization Of Astronomical Maser Radiation. Iv. Circular Polarization Profiles, Moshe Elitzur Sep 1998

Polarization Of Astronomical Maser Radiation. Iv. Circular Polarization Profiles, Moshe Elitzur

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Profile comparison of the Stokes parameters V and I is a powerful tool for maser data analysis, which provides the first direct methods for unambiguous determination of (1) the maser saturation stage, (2) the amplification optical depth and intrinsic Doppler width of unsaturated masers, and (3) the comparative magnitudes of Zeeman splitting and Doppler line width. Circular polarization recently detected in OH 1720 MHz emission from the Galactic center appears to provide the first direct evidence for maser saturation.

Computer Synthesis Of Spectroradiometric Images For Color Imaging Systems Analysis, Garrett M. Johnson Sep 1998

Computer Synthesis Of Spectroradiometric Images For Color Imaging Systems Analysis, Garrett M. Johnson

Theses

A technique to perform full spectral based color calculations through an extension of OpenGL has been created. This method of color computations is more accurate than the standard RGB model that most computer graphics algorithms utilize. By maintaining full wavelength information in color calculations, it is also possible to interactively simulate and display many important color phenomena such as metamerism and fluorescence. This technique is not limited to creating simple images suitable for interactive display, however. Using this extension, it is also possible to synthesize spectroradiometric images of arbitrary spatial and spectral resolution, for use in color imaging system analysis.

Localization Of Sodium, Potassium-Adenosine Triphosphatase In The Cerebral Cortex Of Developing Rats, Maki Ujiie Sep 1998

Localization Of Sodium, Potassium-Adenosine Triphosphatase In The Cerebral Cortex Of Developing Rats, Maki Ujiie

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Active transport via Na+, K+-ATPase plays an important role in establishing and maintaining proper ionic gradient across all mammalian cell membranes. A strict regulation of Na+, and K+ ion levels is especially important in excitable cells such as neurons and myocytes. Inhibition of the enzyme is associated with several pathological conditions and has serious detrimental effects on cerebral cortical cells. Yet the enzyme appears to be limited in amount and distribution in newborn rats. In this study, Na+, K+- ATPase expression and distribution in early postnatal rats were studied …

The Relationship Of The Incisive Canal To Maxillary Median Diastema, Jeffery S. Corbett Sep 1998

The Relationship Of The Incisive Canal To Maxillary Median Diastema, Jeffery S. Corbett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the incisive canal and maxillary median diastema, and to identify an imaging method capable of documenting the geometry and dimensions of the incisive canal. The sample consisted of 59 dry skulls, 26 of which had a maxillary median diastema ranging in size from 0.1 mm to 2.8 mm (mean 1.0 mm, SD = 0.7 mm). Each skull had all of the permanent maxillary teeth present from first molar to first molar and lacked any apparent non-orthodontic condition that could have caused the diastema. Diastema width and canal diameter were …

Guaranteed-Cost Control Of The Nonlinear Benchmark Problem Using Model-Based Fuzzy Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, A. Jadbabaie, M. Jamshidi, Peter Dorato Sep 1998

Guaranteed-Cost Control Of The Nonlinear Benchmark Problem Using Model-Based Fuzzy Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, A. Jadbabaie, M. Jamshidi, Peter Dorato

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We design a state-feedback controller for the nonlinear benchmark problem. Our approach relies on the use of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models to approximate the nonlinear system. Once the fuzzy model is obtained, we develop a guaranteed-cost framework to design the controller using linear matrix inequality methods and the recently obtained relaxed stability conditions. We show that our proposed controller will not only stabilize the system, but also has satisfactory disturbance attenuation properties.

Disaggregating Labor Payments By Skill Level In Gtap, Jing Liu, Nico Van Leeuwen, Tri Thanh Vo, Rod Tyers, Thomas Hertel Sep 1998

Disaggregating Labor Payments By Skill Level In Gtap, Jing Liu, Nico Van Leeuwen, Tri Thanh Vo, Rod Tyers, Thomas Hertel

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

This paper outlines an approach to disaggregating labor payments in the GTAP, global economic data base. The split between low- and high-skilled labor is based on occupational data. High-skilled labor is assumed to consist of managers, administrators, professionals, and para-professionals.

Data are gathered on this occupational split, by sector, in fifteen different economies, and these are mapped to GTAP sectors. Regression analysis shows a systematic relationship between GDP per capita and the national stock of tertiary and secondary educated labor on the one hand, and the sectoral labor payments split on the other.

This model is used to predict labor …

The Internet: Emergent Technologies In Two West African Countries, Jim Rogers Sep 1998

The Internet: Emergent Technologies In Two West African Countries, Jim Rogers

English Faculty Publications

Being connected for most Africans means something completely different from most of us in more (technologically) "developed" countries. Compared to those who have virtually unlimited and relatively cheap access to e-mail and the World Wide Web (WWW), most Africans have limited access to e-mail only. Outside of South Africa, which hosts 70 full Internet Service Providers (ISPs); Egypt, which hosts 25; and Morocco, which hosts 15, most African countries have well under 10 ISPs, the average being loser to 1 or 2 (Jensen, 1998). This example demonstrates the diversity of the African continent; one cannot simply typify the African example. …

But Was He Sorry? The Role Of Remorse In Capital Sentencing, Theodore Eisenberg, Stephen P. Garvey, Martin T. Wells Sep 1998

But Was He Sorry? The Role Of Remorse In Capital Sentencing, Theodore Eisenberg, Stephen P. Garvey, Martin T. Wells

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

What role does remorse really play in capital sentencing? We divide this basic question in two. First, what makes jurors come to believe a defendant is remorseful? Second, does a belief in the defendant's remorse affect the jury's final judgment of life or death? Here we present a systematic, empirical analysis that tries to answer these questions.

What makes jurors think a defendant is remorseful? Among other things, we find that the more jurors think that the crime is coldblooded, calculated, and depraved and that the defendant is dangerous, the less likely they are to think the defendant is remorseful. …

Protein Fragmentation Due To Slow Highly Charged Ion Impact, Christiane Ruehlicke, Dieter Schneider, Markus Schneider, Robert D. Dubois, Rod Balhorn Sep 1998

Protein Fragmentation Due To Slow Highly Charged Ion Impact, Christiane Ruehlicke, Dieter Schneider, Markus Schneider, Robert D. Dubois, Rod Balhorn

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present first results of experiments on the fragmentation of biomolecules using highly charged heavy ions. Fragmentation and modification of oligopeptides, such as dimerization and attachment of ionic salt components, have been observed by means of mass spectrometry. Plasmid DNA molecules were imaged with an atomic force microscope after ion irradiation and profound molecular damage was found.
