Lipograms And Other Contraints, A. Ross Eckler Feb 1998

Lipograms And Other Contraints, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

Many kinds of literary constraint are available to the logologist. On the one hand, E-less text is so easy to create that the reader may be unaware that it is happening. (Some reviewers of Perec's La Disparation never caught on.) On the other hand, palindromic text--probably that most popular form of literary constraint--is so difficult to create that, essentially impossible. Can one characterize in an objective way the relative difficulty of different sorts of constraint? Which ones should be cultivated more widely?

According to Alvin Toffler, author of Future Shock and The Third Wave, human history can be viewed in terms of waves. First there was the Agrarian Age, then came the Industrial Revolution, and now we are riding the crest of the third wave--the Information Age.

A New Wordsworth Word Square, Ted Clarke Feb 1998

A New Wordsworth Word Square, Ted Clarke

Word Ways

My word-square computer program is a general-purpose one designed to search for words to create squares of order 4 to 14. The word typed in for the top row triggers the size to be processed; the program then fills in words for successive rows as far as possible. From thousands of such runs. I have noted that most full searches for ten-squares fail to progress further than the fifth row. Sometimes (see square on left) the leading five letters of the last five rows seems to offer possibilities of completion.

Isograms: The Sequel, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

In the May 1985 Word Ways, Dmitri Borgmann defined as isogram (actually, he recommended "asogram") as a verbal entity in which each each of the alphabetic letters used appears an equal number of times. He further defined a solo isogram as an isogram in which said equal number was one (CAT), a pair isogram when the number was two (DODO),and a trio isogram when the number was three (CHA-CHA-CHA).

Actually, I could have written "add a billion words to your vocabulary". Or more, even. If I had written the actual number of words this article can teach you, you would have turned the page. You would have had to, because the actual number doesn't fit on this page.

Book Review - Moving Beyond Dichotomies To Outline Discourse Strategies In A Transnational Community, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Intended both for ethnographers and for scholars of literacy and rhetorical studies, Juan C. Guerra’s Close to Home: Oral and Literate Practices in a Transnational Mexicano Community is at once groundbreaking and important, though because of the sophistication and detail of its reasoning, it may not be accessible to a broad audience. The book—the fortieth title in the Teachers College Press Language and Literacy Series—is pioneering in a number of ways. Most notable is Guerra’s refusal to fit the group he is focusing on—the multigenerational social network of an extended Mexican-origin family—into a single geographic frame of reference. Guerra explains …

Abstract State Machines 1988-1998: Commented Asm Bibliography, James Huggins, Egon Borger

Computer Science Publications

Hartmut Ehrig asked the first author to write for this column what are the distinguishing features of the ASM approach to specification and verification of complex computing systems. In [21] an attempt had already been made to answer that question by discussing, in general comparative terms, some specific features which are characteristic for the ASM approach with respect to other well known approaches in the literature. That explanation seems to have been understood, as shown by the many positive reactions, but even more the numerous critical reactions of colleagues in the field who felt—rightly—that ASMs put justified doubt on cherished …

On Being Agents Of God's Peace: Relationship And Roles Of The Roman Catholic Church In Croatia And The Serbian Orthodox Church In Ethnic Conflicts In Former Yugoslavia, Tatjana Peric

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Former Yugoslavia was a small country on the Balkan peninsula in south-east Europe - one of the most ethnically, linguistically, and religiously complicated areas of the world. Its peoples have gained dark fame for the first time in their history during the second decade of the twentieth century, causing the first world-wide war ever. The other event that brought the area into the spotlight was the civil war in Croatia and Bosnia, two of the six former Yugoslav republics - the others are Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. The civil strife, lasting from 1991 to the end of 1995, was …

Early Book Sharing: What Teachers Should Know, Sherry Kragler, Linda Martin

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of this paper is to describe strategies that caregivers use while reading books with young children. Research indicates that caregivers: a) use strategies that simplify or extend book language, b) use prosody, and c) use management strategies so the book reading event is meaningful for children. Then, how teachers of preschool children can use these same strategies to plan meaningful book sharing events for children in preschool settings is described.

Comparative Issues Of Selection In Europe: The Case Of Greece, Dionysios Gouvias Jan 1998

Comparative Issues Of Selection In Europe: The Case Of Greece, Dionysios Gouvias

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article deals with inequality of access to higher education in Greece, and especially, the case of the Metropolitan Area of Athens. Specifically, I deal with a general overview of the debates about "selection" in the educational systems of Europe, with special reference to the case of Greece. It is argued here that in those levels of the educational "ladder" where the degree of specialisation and the need for individual selection is insignificant, inequalities exist, but are not profound. ...
