Determinants Of Participation In The Ad Hoc Computer-Supported Workgroup, Nancy A. Floyd Jan 1998

Determinants Of Participation In The Ad Hoc Computer-Supported Workgroup, Nancy A. Floyd

Theses and Dissertations

The increase of end-user computing, including the use of computer-mediated communication systems (CMCS), is one of the most significant changes to occur in business information systems in recent years. Researchers suggest that changes in technology lead to changes in the way individuals think about work and how they perform it. An important question is how the use of CMCS is changing work and work relationships. This study considers a portion of this question; it asks "What makes individuals willing to participate in a computer-supported workgroup (CSWG)."

This study considered the relationship between three variables (sex, anonymity, and token status) and …

Predicting The Effect Of Italy's Long-Awaited Rape Law Reform On "The Land Of Machismo", Amy J. Everhart Jan 1998

Predicting The Effect Of Italy's Long-Awaited Rape Law Reform On "The Land Of Machismo", Amy J. Everhart

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In 1996, the Italian Parliament enacted a new rape law, replacing a law written in 1936 under the direction of Fascist-era leader Benito Mussolini. While the old law classified rape as a crime against public morality, the new law declares it a crime against the person. That it took sixty years to reform the law is a reflection of Italy's long history of subordinating its women. That the law has finally been reformed is a reflection that those women have united to change that attitude. This Note discusses the history of the rape law in Italy and the role of …

Faith Tends To Subvert Legal Order, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1998

Faith Tends To Subvert Legal Order, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

Two old friends and colleagues died in the spring of 1997. Both share with me a Baptist boyhood and a Roman Catholic middle age. Both showed me that the relevance of religion to a lawyer's work is best approached with believers' irony.

Frank Booker, descendant of Cherokee Indians, Missouri farmers, railroaders, and Baptist ministers, taught law at Stetson and then Notre Dame, with a style all his own and with a steady eye on how important the law is. After his funeral, one of his students remembered for me a day in Frank's first-year torts class. They were several weeks …

The Gift Of Language, Joseph Vining Jan 1998

The Gift Of Language, Joseph Vining

Articles

Style and substance cross-are genetically related as we now might want to say. Each draws on and is implied by the other. One point at which they cross is our sense of the nature of human language, what language is and can be, what it is not and can never be. The language of law is part of human language. Law is a distinctive form of thought, but it lives in human language. "Rule" might be thought synonymous with "law," but for all its talk of rules, the practice of law does not begin with a descriptive statement, or a …

Injured Women Before Common Law Courts, 1860-1930, Margo Schlanger Jan 1998

Injured Women Before Common Law Courts, 1860-1930, Margo Schlanger

Articles

How did early American tort law treat women? How were they expected to behave, and how were others expected to behave towards them? What gender differences mattered, and how did courts deal with those differences? These are the issues this Article explores. My aim is to illuminate the common law of torts and its relation to and with ideas about gender difference, by focusing on three sets of cases involving injured women, spanning the time between approximately 1860 and 1930. My conclusions run counter to two approaches scholars have frequently taken in analyzing gender and the common law of torts. …

French Aesthetics: Contemporary Painting Theory, Gary Shapiro Jan 1998

French Aesthetics: Contemporary Painting Theory, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

One peculiar feature of the Anglo-American reception of French thought since about 1970 is the view that the variety of thinkers and tendencies involved reduces everything to language. One crucial place to test such a reading is with regard to a set of texts devoted to painting and the visual arts, for the latter would seem to be situated at or beyond the boundaries of language, a place that Julia Kristeva calls the semiotic. The alleged reductionism of the French is usually construed as the claim that language is a seamless whole in which all meanings are defined in terms …

Young Children's Understanding Of Design In The Technology Process, Jean E. O'Sullivan Jan 1998

Young Children's Understanding Of Design In The Technology Process, Jean E. O'Sullivan

Theses : Honours

This study explored the development of children's thinking when social constructivist principles of learning were implemented through technological experiences. The study monitored the development of children's understanding of “design" through project work, using classroom based action research. In addition to investigating children's understandings, the study explored the use of technology in early childhood curriculum to develop the skills said to be required in the next millennium. The study found that five year old children are capable of "designing" and that technology is an effective vehicle for developing socially, contextually and culturally appropriate learning experiences.

Bureaucracy In The Postmodern World: Problems And Solutions, Paul C. Godfrey, Grant C. Madsen Jan 1998

Bureaucracy In The Postmodern World: Problems And Solutions, Paul C. Godfrey, Grant C. Madsen

Faculty Publications

This paper considers the problems presented by modern bureaucratic organizations within the framework of postmodern philosophy. Bureaucracy represents the logical outcome of the rational tradition in western philosophy. Because of their efficiency properties, individuals are both the beneficiaries and victims of bureaucratic behavior. We suggest that a solution to these problems will not be found by using existing philosophical frameworks. The French philosopher Jean-Francois Lyotard presents a model of postmodern relationships based on language games. We explore the concept of language games within bureaucratic settings.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

There is no escaping the mentality--or the burden--of e pluribus unum, writes EDWARD M. GRIFFIN, whether there is a oneness or a plural character to being an American or another notion entirely of what kind of people our multicultural backgrounds have fashioned. Whether national policy or educational philosophy, this concept, these concepts, must be confronted. Professor of English at the University of Minnesota, Griffin has written widely on such colonial figures as Jonathan Edwards and Charles Chauncy, and he has recently turned his attention to the American poet/playwrights Robert Lowell and William Alfred.

JESSICA B. TEISCH examines the story …

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect that a five-day horseback riding program had on the standing and/or sitting balance of children ages eight to eighteen afflicted with a variety of disabling diagnoses. The stated hypothesis is that after participating in a five-day session of therapeutic riding, subjects will show significant improvement in standing and/or sitting balance as measured by the Functional Reach Test (FRT) and the Modified Functional Reach Test (MFRT). The 15 subjects tested using FRT and the 17 subjects tested using the MFRT were all participants of the Cheff Center riding program. Subjects were …

College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Newsletter

As educators and future educators, we will be working with students from diverse groups and all walks of life. Many of us enter this field entrenched in our own culture with no real understanding of how others' life experiences have influenced their values and beliefs. The multicultural courses in the College of Education force us to examine how we came to adopt our values and from where our beliefs originated. No other course in the graduate curriculum forces us to challenge the myths and stereotypes of American society as profoundly as these courses.

Family And Service Coordinator Agreements In The Development And Implementation Of The Individualized Family Service Plan (Ifsp), Byoung-In Lee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Part C of Public Law 105-17 (originally Part H of Public Laws 99-457, 101-476, and 102-119), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1997, strengthened incentives to states to provide services for infants and toddlers, from birth to age three, who have disabilities or are at-risk for developmental delays. The law and its regulations require that the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is a written plan for services to be developed and implemented for the child and family. Inclusion of family members as full participants in the design and implementation of services is emphasized; This study was designed to …

Critical Multiculturalism In The Classroom: From Theory To Practice, Denise Michelle Dalaimo Jan 1998

Critical Multiculturalism In The Classroom: From Theory To Practice, Denise Michelle Dalaimo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since Paulo Freire's (1970) revolutionary work Pedagogy of the Oppressed, "radical" (critical/feminist/multicultural) educators have endeavored to change the face of education by altering traditional power relations and by including the work and experiences of previously under- or unrepresented groups. Research to date in the field of radical pedagogy has been largely focused on and performed in the small and intimate classroom. Many of the approaches and techniques proposed by radical educators---though effective in smaller classes---are difficult to implement in the larger, more impersonal classroom which is becoming more and more prevalent in contemporary higher education. This research has been largely …

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise In Reading The Interracial Canon, Craig Andrew Magee Jan 1998

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise In Reading The Interracial Canon, Craig Andrew Magee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise in Reading the Interracial Canon has two purposes. First, it offers detailed readings of three American novels: An Imperative Duty by William Dean Howells (1891), What Answer? by Anna Dickinson (1868), and Kingsblood Royal by Sinclair Lewis (1947). These readings are accomplished within the context of the "interracial canon", a set of writings dealing with the expression of various aspects of interracial relationships. The interracial canon, as well as its specialized vocabulary and unique theoretical outlook, is roughly sketched in an introduction and several appendices.

Indexing Androgyny: The Transgendered Phenomenon And Its Challenge To Ethnology, Christopher Todd White

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will focus on the life experiences of transsexual individuals living in the Las Vegas community. This is an ethnographic study that includes field research, extensive interviews, and library research; Through this study I hope to gain better insight as to what motivated these individuals to seek surgical sex reassignment. I wish to explore the similarities and differences between preoperative transsexuals and other transgendered persons, and I hope to tie the experiences of local transsexuals to the experiences of transsexuals in other parts of America in order to determine if there are any social or environmental conditions that may …

Philosophical Foundations, Social Power And Social Work Practice, Timothy Duane Hamilton Jan 1998

Philosophical Foundations, Social Power And Social Work Practice, Timothy Duane Hamilton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The contemporary philosophical landscape, which affects the fields of philosophical endeavor and the ways power is framed, is described. The covert manner these influences effect social work practice is made more visible through the use of ethically oriented decision making patterns; Ways that authority and discretion are used and abused, and abusive decision-making, are described making them easier to recognize and mitigate. Knowledge of current and potential ways that social power operates provides social workers tools in promoting the goals of empowerment and uncovering and enhancing clients' strengths; Finally, a public sphere within which a reflective social work practice could …
