This paper discusses the background and experiences of a recently expanded Extension program. Discussions include initial challenges of a new program and tactics that were not wildly successful. Also discussed are tactics that have proven successful, some of which are tried and true Extension methods while others are relatively new. Extension educators responsible for strengthening families through parenting education. To be effective, they must work to bridge gender differences to include and encourage fathers' participation. Adapting examples from John Gray's popular text, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, the author offers practical applications for female educators working to build fatherhood groups and deliver parenting education across gender lines.

A synergistic algorithm for producing global leaf area index and fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation fields from canopy reflectance data measured by MODIS (moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer) and MISR (multiangle imaging spectroradiometer) instruments aboard the EOS-AM 1 platform is described here. The proposed algorithm is based on a three-dimensional formulation of the radiative transfer process in vegetation canopies. It allows the use of information provided by MODIS (single angle and up to 7 shortwave spectral bands) and MISR (nine angles and four shortwave spectral bands) instruments within one algorithm. Identification And Characterization Of Spcu, A Chaperone Required For Efficient Secretion Of The Exou Cytotoxin, Viviane Finck-Barbançon, Timothy L. Yahr, Dara W. Frank

In recent studies, we have shown that Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains that are acutely cytotoxic in vitro damage the lung epithelium in vivo. Genetic analysis indicated that the factor responsible for acute cytotoxicity was controlled by ExsA and therefore was part of the exoenzyme S regulon. The specific virulence determinant responsible for epithelial damage in vivo and cytotoxicity in vitro was subsequently mapped to the exoU locus. The present studies are focused on a genetic characterization of the exoU locus. Activity-dependent changes in synaptic efficacy of neurons seems to be important for the development of neuronal circuitry and for many forms of synaptic plasticity including memory and learning. Long-term depression (LTD) of synaptic transmission has been recognized in the brain as a mechanism for decreasing synaptic efficacy to modulate activity. In sympathetic ganglia, which is known to have a robust long-term potentiation (LTP), very little experimental work has been performed to explore the possibility of the presence of LTD. Preliminary experiments show that LTD can, in fact, be demonstrated in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG) of rat. Characterizing LTD in …

臨床醫學教育的目標，在培養醫師能有效發揮醫療技能，滿足病人及社會的需求，創造高品質的醫療環境。臨床醫學的教學方法，傳統上以講堂及床邊教學為主，除了缺乏眞實情境的考量外，床邊教學受到時間及病人因素的影響，教學品質不易掌握。臨床醫學教育的評量方法，傳統上以指導教師從有限的觀察中，進行粗略的指導，除了缺乏完整客觀的評量外，醫學生所能得到的收穫有限。為改進教學效果，臨床醫學教育發展出使用標準病人的教學及評量方法，許多研究證實在標準病人的協助下，醫師培育者除了能夠瞭解醫學生的學習能力，靈活運用各種有效的教學方法外，醫學生也能夠獲得眞實有效的回饋，確實改進臨床技能。標準病人亦可有效使用於各級醫師的再教育課程及醫療品質研究。

互動式小組討論教學是台大醫學院醫學教育改革所強調之教學策略。本研究之目的在於瞭解醫學系學生在參與小班教學課程後，對其内容、討論議題、進行方式及短期教學成效之評估，以便提供課程改進之參考；研究對象為八十四、八十五與八十六學年修習此課程之所有醫學系二、三與四年級學生。研究方法為利用結構式問卷於學期末交由學生填寫，問卷內容包括對小組討論方式之滿意度、認為小組討論之學習效果、參與小組討論之興趣、為小組討論課前準備所費之精力、參考資料獲取之困難度、討論主題之興趣、討論主题之困難度，學習指引中參考資料之滿意度及整體滿意度。共有753位學生完成調查，分析結果發現三個學年度學生均相當滿意小組討論之方式及具高度參與興趣，對學習效果之滿意度與討論主题之興趣之評估居其次。對參考資料之滿意度卻都偏低，唯整體滿意度均高，不滿意者僅佔4.0-1.8％。三學年度之評量比較，各項均無明顯差異。而醫二、醫三、醫四不同年級之學生評量結果，則顯示醫二對小組討論方式、學習效果、參考資料及整體之滿意度比醫三、醫四滿意；在課前準備上，醫二學生較多認為容易，且具統計學上之差異。對參與興趣、對主題之興趣或困難度而言，則無明顯差異。為減少個人之干擾因子影響，以經歷三學年度小組討論之同班學生之評量進行比較，亦發現上述評量變項之相同趨勢。整體看來，醫學生均相當認同此種模式之學習及肯定此種課程。不同年級學生評量之差異結果可能與討論題材之性質及課業負擔有關。本研究提示討論題材之編纂，提供適切之參考資料及加強小組運作技巧是增進小班教學成效之關鍵。

本研究目的旨在探討醫學系推行「問题基礎學習小班教學」之可行性。共有25名臨床主治醫師擔任小班老師和40名醫學系三年級的學生參加本研究。學生分成5組，每組7至8人，實際小組討論在暑期進行，連續5週，每週討論一個個案，每個個案分三次討論完畢（每週一、三、五下午）。每個老師只需指導一組學生討論完成一個個案。每個個案討論結束時，老師和每位學生均立即塡寫評量問卷，同時學生接受臨床知識筆試。本研究老師出席率為96%，問卷回收率為96%；學生出席率為77%，問卷回收率為68.5%。68.4%的學生自認為能夠自動自發地完成討論議題；75%的學生在討論上充份發言；74.3%的學生認為，經過這門課後，對課程中討論的主題有深入的了解；75%的學生對課程中討論的主題很有興趣；高達87.5%的學生贊成繼續小班教學。79.2%的老師認為學生討論時能明確地抓住討論重點；87.5%認為學生在課堂上討論熱烈；66.7%認為在討論時學生的發言平均；91.6%認為學生對討論主題的觀念正確；95.8%均贊成繼續實行小班教學。臨床知識筆試除最後一週回收率低無法準確評估外，其餘4週之成績均達及格標準。本研究認為台灣醫學院醫學系學生的適應力強，足以接受「問題基礎學習小班教學」之新的教學方式。

青少年正處於行為模式以及生活型態養成的關鍵階段，因此，本研究利用1477名台北市國中生的資料進行典型相關分析，以探討青少年的個人特質及其社會環境在此過程中所扮演的角色。結果顯示，預測男女物質濫用行為的因子有些許不同。在男生方面，當朋友愈有吸菸或飲酒或嚼檳榔行為、家人愈有吸菸或飲酒行為、年級愈高、從家人得到的支持程度愈低時，他們會有吸菸、飲酒或嚼檳榔行為的可能性就愈大。在女生方面，則是當朋友愈有吸菸或飲酒行為、家人愈有吸菸或飲酒行為、從家人得到支持的程度愈低、加上本身的內控傾向愈低時，他們有吸菸或飲酒行為的可能性就愈大。此結果說明了朋友和家人的行為、家人給予支持的程度、以及個人特質，在青少年行為養成過程中很重要，可作為未來發展物質濫用防制介入計畫之參考。

醫學工程的廣泛定義是以物理與數學的觀念方法有規劃地去解決生命科學的問題，而實際的醫學工程則包括應用電機、電子、機械、化工、光學、材料、等其他工程原理於暸解、修改、或控制生物系統（人與動物），以致於設計、製造、用於監測患者生理功能與協助診斷、治療程序之儀器與設備。有鑑於此一醫工領域的多樣性與整合性，本院醫學工程研究中心自八十七年八月一日起正式改制為醫學院與工學院合設之醫學工程研究所，為本校醫學工程敎育設立重要的里程碑。値此重要轉型時刻，實有必要依國內現況對未來之課程、研究領域與學生之生涯規劃提出說明，作為將來敎學與研究的方針。
