Improvisation In Latin Dance Music: History And Style, Peter L. Manuel Jan 1998

Improvisation In Latin Dance Music: History And Style, Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

Latin dance music constitutes one of the most dynamic and sophisticated urban popular music traditions in the Americas. Improvisation plays an important role in this set of genres, and its styles are sufficiently distinctive, complex, and internally significant as to merit book-length treatment along the lines of Paul Berliner's volume Thinking in Jazz (1994). To date, however, the subject of Latin improvisation has received only marginal and cursory analytical treatment, primarily in recent pedagogical guidebooks and videos. While a single chapter such as this can hardly do justice to the subject, an attempt will be made here to sketch some …

Indian Fishing Rights: Aftermath Of The Fox Decision And The Year 2000, Karen Ferguson Jan 1998

Indian Fishing Rights: Aftermath Of The Fox Decision And The Year 2000, Karen Ferguson

American Indian Law Review

The ongoing Indian fishing rights debate in northern Michigan is intensifying as a 1985 court ordered consent agreement nears its year 2000 expiration date. Many of the local citizenry are concerned that the debate may turn violent as it did in the 1970s. In the 1970s there was fierce competition between Indians and non-Indians over a fish resource that was becoming depleted at an alarming rate. While pollution of the Great Lakes and the presence of non-native parasites were more likely the cause of the depleted stocks, the sport fishermen blamed Indian gill netting for the problem. In recent years, …

Patriarchy And Discordant Discourses In The Contemporary Roman Catholic Church : The Voices Of Priests And Women In Parish Settings, Geraldine Sharp Jan 1998

Patriarchy And Discordant Discourses In The Contemporary Roman Catholic Church : The Voices Of Priests And Women In Parish Settings, Geraldine Sharp

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This thesis explores the sexual theology and contemporary teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and considers their implications for women and priests. It examines the salience and relevance of traditional teaching in the everyday lives of priests and women. It questions the link between a traditionally formed priesthood and the customary beliefs and practices of 'ordinary' English Catholics. Feminist scholarship has produced powerful insights into the ways in which organised religion has subordinated women through patriarchal structures and organisation, although there has been little exploration of the gendered nature of Catholic sexual theology. This thesis suggests that the negative construction …

Discount Accretion Task Force, American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants. Accounting Standards Executive Committee

Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

This proposed Statement of Position (SOP) addresses accounting for differences between contractual and expected future cash flows from an investor's initial investment in certain loans and debt securities (loans) acquired in a transfer when such differences are attributable, at least in part, to credit quality. It includes such loans acquired in purchase business combinations and would apply to all enterprises. The proposed SOP would limit the yield that may be accreted (accretable yield) to the excess of the investor's estimate of undiscounted expected future principal and interest cash flows (expected future cash flows) over the investor's initial investment in the …

Toward A Model Of Work And Family Balance: How Families With Children Having Serious Emotional Disorders Manage Caregiving And Worklife, Julie M. Rosenzweig, Alice Myrth Ogilvie, Eileen M. Brennan

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Employed parents of children with serious emotional disorders must manage the competing demands of home and job. Although every situation is unique, all parents cope daily with the interface between employment and home. As the number of single employed mothers and dual-worker households has increased, so has the research on work and family. A review of this literature offers an examination of the different ways work and family relate within the busy lives of employed parents. Three primary models emerge from the review that describe experiences of mothers and fathers challenged by meeting both the needs of family members and …

New Wave Computer Technology And The Administration Of Speech Communication Performance Courses, Chris R. Sawyer, Ralph R. Behnke Jan 1998

New Wave Computer Technology And The Administration Of Speech Communication Performance Courses, Chris R. Sawyer, Ralph R. Behnke

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article talks about the continued interest of the speech communication field in technology-supported instruction. Earlier detailed descriptions of teaching/learning laboratories in speech communication are based upon older computer-assisted instruction models and such laboratories were financially out of reach for most small-to-average sized departments. Recent, dramatic enhancements of the memories and processing speeds of microcomputers has made them ideal for recording, editing, and replaying sound supported motion picture clips of speech presentations. Clearly, evaluating student performance and providing substantial and prompt instructional feedback can easily be accommodated by the course web site. Aside from the interactive testing and automated grading …

Administering The Hybrid Department: A National Survey Of Combined Communications/Theatre Arts Departments, Ellen Halperin-Royer Jan 1998

Administering The Hybrid Department: A National Survey Of Combined Communications/Theatre Arts Departments, Ellen Halperin-Royer

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article presents a study which aims to discover characteristics of hybrid speech/theatre departments that describe themselves as highly cooperative and collegial. To test the hypothesis that departments that are highly integrated between disciplines enjoy higher degrees of cooperation than departments where the disciplines function independently, a national survey of combined speech/theatre departments was conducted. The first procedure was a mail survey, which was followed by a telephone survey. The mail questionnaire began with a question regarding the types of degrees offered by the department. The survey then included a series of yes/no questions pertaining to the degree of integration …

The Praxis Of Narrative Assessment: Communication Competence In An Information Age, Pat Arneson, Ronald C. Arnett Jan 1998

The Praxis Of Narrative Assessment: Communication Competence In An Information Age, Pat Arneson, Ronald C. Arnett

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article suggests addressing communication competence from a perspective outside the behavioral orientation to communication. Dialogue presupposes both the general public and the academy meeting one another in serious conversation about educational assessment. Ignoring assessment will not make persistent calls for accountability disappear. The routine use of negation of authority leads the way for a powerful enemy to take the public stage from the spectators who by that time have confused the critical life of a spectator with active participation in the culture for too long. Assessment is an inescapable part of the evaluation process. How to determine when communication …

The substance of classroom …

Developing An Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Program In Communication: Values, Curriculum, And Preliminary Assessment, Thomas J. Socha

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article describes a case study of a Communication Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) program and reports a limited, preliminary assessment of the teaching effectiveness of 25 UTA. The article concludes by identifying various benefits and drawbacks of Communication UTA programs and offers recommendations for departments interested in developing similar programs. Communication faculty were initially skeptical of the idea of having undergraduates serve as teachers. This prompted discussions about the underlying values that might serve as building blocks of a UTA program. The label UTA is used to refer to a supervised teaching role occupied by an undergraduate. The role of …
