Agricultural Concentration: An Analysis By Commodity, Don E. Albrecht
Agricultural Concentration: An Analysis By Commodity, Don E. Albrecht
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
One of the most striking consequences of the industrialization of agriculture in the United States is the extent to which production is becoming increasingly concentrated on a relatively few farms. In this study, a human ecological perspective and nationwide census data at the county level from 1982, 1987, and 1992 were used to explore concentration in the dairy, hog, and beef cattle industries. Wide differences were found in the extent of concentration from commodity to commodity and from county to county. It was found that in counties where the production of one commodity is highly concentrated, the production of other …

Publications and Research
Background
The number of reports of influenza-vaccine-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome to the national Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System increased from 37 in 1992-1993 to 74 in 1993-1994, arousing concern about a possible increase in vaccine-associated risk.
Methods
Patients given a diagnosis of the Guillain-Barré syndrome in the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 influenza-vaccination seasons were identified in the hospital-discharge data bases of four states. Vaccination histories were obtained by telephone interviews during 1995-1996 and were confirmed by the vaccine providers. Disease with an onset within six weeks after vaccination was defined as vaccine-associated. Vaccine coverage in the population was measured through a random-digit-dialing …

How Pigs' Blood Could Save Lives: Canadian Study Could End Need For Human Donations, Allison Hanes, Randy Boswell
How Pigs' Blood Could Save Lives: Canadian Study Could End Need For Human Donations, Allison Hanes, Randy Boswell
Data and Test Instruments
Dr. [Vivian McAlister] agrees that the risk of inter-species infection remains a key obstacle to producing safe pigblood products for people: "The most important thing is that the safety of this sort of thing has to be thoroughly assessed before any implementation. We're dealing more with the immunological barriers, not the infectious disease," he says of his research. "However, if the infectious risks were overcome, or they were understood, an animal source for blood donation" could revolutionize blood-supply services around the world, he says. Currently mired in a depressed pork market that is threatening to put many producers out of …

A New Eimeria Species (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) Infecting Onychomys Species (Rodentia: Muridae) In New Mexico And Arizona, John A. Hnida, Wade D. Wilson, Donald W. Duszynski
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Fecal samples from 3 species of Onychomys (Rodentia: Muridae) captured in New Mexico and Arizona were examined for coccidia. Six of the 59 (10%) were infected with a new species of Eimeria. Sporulated oocysts (n = 105) of this new species are subspheroidal, 17.4 × 16.1 (14-21 × 13-19) μm, with ellipsoidal sporocysts 10.4 × 5.7 (9-12 × 5-8) μm. This species occurred in 3 of 24 (13%) Onychomys arenicola, 2 of 31 (6%) Onychomys leucogaster from New Mexico, and 1 of 4 (25%) Onychomys torridus from Arizona. Isolates recovered from O. leucogaster and O. torridus were …

A Serological Survey Of Equine Infectious Diseases In Thailand, Urasri Tantaswasdi, Ruenrudee Punyahotra, Surapong Wongkasemjit, Patchima Indrakamhang
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
During 1997-1998, a serological survey of equine infectious diseases in Thailand was undertaken. Blood, sera and blood smears were taken from 400 horses, donkeys and mules out of an equine population of 8,600. Tests were carried out at the National Institute of Animal Health, Bangkok, Thailand, and at the USDA laboratories, USA, for 10 diseases. There was no evidence of the presence of African Horse Sickness, Glanders, Dourine, Surra and Equine Viral Arteritis. There was one reactor to Babesia caballi and 62 to Babesia equi. Fourteen reactors to equine influenza virus subtype 1 (Praque) and 24 to subtype 2 (Newmarket …
Cellular Mechanisms Of Altered Neuronal Sensitivity In The Genetically Epilepsy-Prone Rat, Lance Russell Molnar
Cellular Mechanisms Of Altered Neuronal Sensitivity In The Genetically Epilepsy-Prone Rat, Lance Russell Molnar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR) is an animal model of epilepsy which exhibits deficits in GABAergic neurotransmission in a variety of brain regions. However, the underlying cause for this deficit has yet to be described. The present studies were therefore performed in order to elucidate the mechanism(s) underlying this GABAergic deficit. To accomplish this task, electrophysiological recordings of Purkinje neurons in sagittal slices of the cerebellar vermis were performed. The initial aim was to compare the basic electrical membrane characteristics of Purkinje neurons from GEPR and control animals using standard intracellular recording techniques. These studies indicated that there is no …

Univercity News (1998-11-09)
UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Sequence Analysis Of Bacterial Dna In The Colon Of An Andean Mummy, Massimo Ubaldi, Stefania Luciani, Isolina Marota, Gino Fornaciari, Raul J. Cano, Franco Rollo
Biological Sciences
We have isolated DNA from 14 tissue samples from the internal organs of an Andean human mummy (10th–11th century A.D.) and have checked the persistence of the original human and bacterial templates using the following main approaches: 1) amino acid racemization test; 2) quantification of mitochondrial DNA copy number; 3) survey of bacterial DNA in the different organs; 4) sequence analysis of bacterial amplicons of different lengths. The results demonstrate that both the original human DNA and the DNA of the bacteria of the mummy gut are preserved. In particular, sequence analysis of two (respectively 100 and 196 bp in …
