Holmes And The Romantic Mind, Anne C. Dailey
Holmes And The Romantic Mind, Anne C. Dailey
Duke Law Journal
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. is perhaps best known for his "tough-minded" jurisprudence based on objective standards of reasonableness. Scholars have traditionally understood Holmes's jurisprudential outlook as fundamentally behavioristic. Professor Dailey challenges that understanding, revealing the importance of Romantic psychology in Holmes's major writings. His outlook, she argues, was shaped by his belief in unconscious motivations, imagination, irrationality and instinctual drives. Rather than simply characterize Holmes as a "Romantic," Professor Dailey draws out the conflict in his thought, illuminating his struggle to develop an empirical approach to law that could also account for the depth and complexity of human nature.
Visual Images Of Late Anglo-Saxon Kings And Kingship, Kevin L. Glick
Visual Images Of Late Anglo-Saxon Kings And Kingship, Kevin L. Glick
Masters Theses
The role of ideology in the creation of tenth- and eleventh-century Anglo-Saxon visual representations of Anglo-Saxon kings is the focus of this study. This study assesses Anglo-Saxon images in manuscripts and on coins, seals, and textiles produced during the tenth and eleventh centuries. Each image included depicts Anglo-Saxon kings who ruled during the tenth and eleventh centuries. The thesis begins with a discussion of the term ideology and a historical introduction to the political developments in rulership and monasticism that influenced images of kings. The thesis covers each art form separately, examining what evidence exists, what problems exist in dealing …

Predictive Relationships For Uptake Of Organic Contaminants By Hybrid Poplar Trees, Joel Gerard Burken, Jerald L. Schnoor
Predictive Relationships For Uptake Of Organic Contaminants By Hybrid Poplar Trees, Joel Gerard Burken, Jerald L. Schnoor
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Twelve Organic Compounds Commonly Found at Hazardous Waste Sites Were Studied for Uptake by Hybrid Poplar Trees. the Vegetative Uptake of Many of These Compounds Has Not Previously Been Demonstrated for Plant Species Being Utilized for Phytoremediation, Such as Hybrid Poplar Trees. Experiments Were Conducted Hydroponically Utilizing 14C-Labeled Compounds to Ascertain Translocation and Fate. Predictive Relationships for the Translocation and Partitioning to Plant Tissues Were Developed from the Experimental Data. Translocation and Partitioning Relationships based on Compounds' Octanol- Water Partitioning Coefficients (100 K(Ow)) Produced the Best Results, But the Relationships Did Not Allow for Fully Accurate Prediction of Each Contaminant's …

IIMB Management Review
Round Table features an exhaustive discussion on Indian Brands ? beginning with the definition of an 'Indian' brand and elaborating upon the origin, the home and the 'soul' of brands, the various aspects of building and managing Indian brands particularly in the face of competition from MNCs; brand extensions and how brands cope with the vagaries of the market. Several interesting issues on methodology and research were raised. In order to present a truly broad spectrum of views on brands and complement the Round Table discussion, Pradeep Kumar spoke to a cross section of marketers in various product and service …

Lives Of The Little-Known: Women Children And Servants In Augusta County, 1745-1779, Nancy B. Osborne
History Theses & Dissertations
The court and its justices exerted a great deal of control and power over all the people of eighteenth-century Augusta County, Virginia. The justices oversaw the economic life of the county. They also arbitrated in civil matters and punished those convicted of crimes. The court exerted its authority most heavily over the less powerful of Augusta County society, its women, children, and servants. The justices' control of these people was based upon considerations of economic values and the justices' own prestige and power in the community. The women, children, and servants, in turn, used the court system to regain some …
Fact Or Fiction? The Use Of Eighteenth-Century Criminal Biographies In Historical Studies, Steven M. Wakefield
Fact Or Fiction? The Use Of Eighteenth-Century Criminal Biographies In Historical Studies, Steven M. Wakefield
History Theses & Dissertations
Marxist studies concerning crime and criminality in eighteenth-century England, and especially London, have explained the problem strictly in terms of a class based struggle between the elites and the working poor. Marxists further contend that the majority of criminals hanged for capital offenses during the eighteenth-century also came Rom the working poor. Using an analysis of criminal biographies written between 1723 and 1783, this study questions the Marxist paradigm by suggesting that eighteenth-century crime and criminality were not inter-class conflicts but more intra-class struggles, and hangings reflected this.

Exposing "Secrets Worth Knowing" In The Early Republic: Robert R. Henry's Papers As A Problem In Documentary Research, Robert Scott Davis Jr.
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The "Journal of Archibald Clark" proved to be the papers of Robert R. Henry. They document Henry's 1820s political crusade in Georgia, New York, and Washington to replace Clark as the port master at St. Marys, Georgia. Henry meticulously recorded his thoughts and actions in what he eventually left as a memoir to his descendants. He even saw ammunition for his causes in documents critical of his efforts, which he copied without obvious prejudice. These papers provide an extremely rare documented case study of political activism of the period.
Catholic Intellectual Traditions And Contemporary Scholarship, James Turner
Catholic Intellectual Traditions And Contemporary Scholarship, James Turner
Journal of Catholic Education
The Catholic university can make a natural home for experimenting with the foundations of knowledge because Catholic scholars retain faith in a God who created the universe and human reason as a reliable God-given instrument for comprehending this creation. The central question is: How can the Catholic university reconstruct itself to bring the resources of Catholic tradition to bear on our common task of rebuilding the house of learning? Our common problem is the fragmentation of knowledge. The Catholic university needs to inhabit the domains of both secular learning and Christian knowledge. The participation of Catholic intellectuals and universities in …

Using a 73.6 pb-1 data sample of Υ(2S) events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have investigated the hadronic transitions between the Υ(2S) and the Υ(1S). The dipion transition Υ(2S) → Υ(1S) π+π- was studied using two different analysis techniques. Selecting events in which Υ(1S) → e+e-, μ+μ- (‘‘exclusive’’ analysis), and using the Υ(1S) leptonic branching fractions world averages from the PDG review, we obtained Ɓ(Υ(2S) …

An Examination Of The United States Air Service's Logistics Operations, Andrew W. Hunt
An Examination Of The United States Air Service's Logistics Operations, Andrew W. Hunt
Theses and Dissertations
This historical study details the U.S. Air Service's logistics operations at home and abroad in an attempt to determine the relationship between the process and more recently established logistic principles. The information in the study was collected through an extensive review of both first hand accounts and historical compilations of the nature of World War I aviation logistics. Information regarding the production of the De Haviland DH-4 and Liberty Engine serve as the primary case examples of the operation of the logistics system. The established principles required for comparison were extracted from the writings of a number of expert military …
