A New Niche For Vibrio Logei, The Predominant Light Organ Symbiont Of Squids In The Genus Sepiola, Pat M. Fidopiastis, Sigurd Von Boletzky, Edward G. Ruby

Biological Sciences

Two genera of sepiolid squids—Euprymna, found primarily in shallow, coastal waters of Hawaii and the Western Pacific, and Sepiola, the deeper-, colder-water-dwelling Mediterranean and Atlantic squids—are known to recruit luminous bacteria into light organ symbioses. The light organ symbiont of Euprymna spp. is Vibrio fischeri, but until now, the light organ symbionts of Sepiola spp. have remained inadequately identified. We used a combination of molecular and physiological characteristics to reveal that the light organs of Sepiola affinis and Sepiola robusta contain a mixed population of Vibrio logei and V. fischeri, with V. logei comprising between …

Cultivating The National Body: A History Of Physical Culture In Republican China, Andrew D. Morris Jan 1998

Cultivating The National Body: A History Of Physical Culture In Republican China, Andrew D. Morris

History

This dissertation is a study of the role played by ideas and practices of physical culture (physical education, sports, recreation, physical fitness) in China over the first half of this century. My focus is on the connections between Chinese physical culture (in Chinese "tiyu," or literally "body-cultivation") and notions of the nation, modernity and a modern citizenry - namely, how the realm of tiyu served as a conduit for teaching Chinese citizens about modernity and the nation. The work is primarily based on Republican-era physical culture journals and bureaucratic reports, collected in libraries and archives in Hangzhou, Beijing, Nanjing and …

Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves Jan 1998

Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

By comparing the papers produced by the laboratory teams of Robert Gallo and Jean Luc Montagnier during the AIDS virus hunt, we have an opportunity to discern the fine line between a bold, explicit rhetoric that may convince as well as offend and a bald, reserved rhetoric that may actually conceal important implications. Going too far in either direction may create misunderstandings and ethical dilemmas as will be demonstrated in a textual analysis deepened by an exploration of historical context and interviews with key participants. Since a public health crisis calls upon communication that thwarts misunderstandings, scientists should understand the …

Norway Rat Exclusion In Alberta, John B. Bourne Jan 1998

Norway Rat Exclusion In Alberta, John B. Bourne

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Since 1950, Alberta Agriculture has supervised and coordinated a rural-based Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) control program that has essentially kept the province rat-free. Success is achieved by eliminating invading rats within a control zone 600 km long and 30 km wide along the eastern border of the province. A systematic detection and eradication system is used throughout the zone to keep rat infestations to a minimum. Strong public support and citizen participation was developed through public education and a sound awareness effort. Although rat infestations within the interior are minor, a rat response plan is in place to …

Field Trial Using Flight Control As A Repellent For Canada Goose (Branta Canadensis) Control In Fort Collins, Colorado, Patrick Devers, Paula Reichert, Richard Poche Jan 1998

Field Trial Using Flight Control As A Repellent For Canada Goose (Branta Canadensis) Control In Fort Collins, Colorado, Patrick Devers, Paula Reichert, Richard Poche

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Flight Control, containing anthraquinone, was field tested during 1997 in Colorado as a repellent to keep Canada geese (Branta canadensis) off turf. The product was sprayed at a rate of 1.9 kg per ha, using a boom sprayer towed by a golf cart. The reduction in goose numbers on the treatment plot was 95.1 % ten days after application. A decline of 64.7% in the number of goose droppings on the area was recorded.

Potential Risks Associated With The Legalization Of Exotic Predators Such As The Ferret (Mustela Putorius Furo) In California, Thomas G. Moore, Desley A. Whisson Jan 1998

Potential Risks Associated With The Legalization Of Exotic Predators Such As The Ferret (Mustela Putorius Furo) In California, Thomas G. Moore, Desley A. Whisson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

The interest in possessing ferrets as pets has given rise to controversy between the "rights" of the individual to own the pet of their choice and the concerns for protection of wildlife in California. An overview of the legislative history in California illustrates the state's attempts at protecting native wildlife species from exotic wild birds and animals. Concerns as to the potential threats associated with the legalization of ferrets in California are warranted in light of the wildlife damage resulting from the deliberate introduction of ferrets in New Zealand and the non-native red fox in California. A framework to assess …

Modified Bait Stations For California Ground Squirrel Control In Endangered Kangaroo Rat Habitat, Desley A. Whisson Jan 1998

Modified Bait Stations For California Ground Squirrel Control In Endangered Kangaroo Rat Habitat, Desley A. Whisson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

California ground squirrels are a major problem in areas that also support populations of endangered kangaroo rats. Traditional bait stations can be easily modified to exclude kangaroo rats, thereby providing landowners with a method of controlling ground squirrels that mitigates hazards to endangered kangaroo rats. Specifications for the design and use of modified bait stations are discussed.

Ruby Canyon/Black Ridge Integrated Resource Management Plan, Record Of Decision And Finding Of No Significant Impact, United States Bureau Of Land Management

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The decision to implement this plan is in conformance with the 1987 Grand Junction Resource Area Resource Management Plan (RMP). Many of the management actions being proposed in the plan constitute an amendment of the RMP. This integrated resource management plan employs a "benefits based management approach" which expands our management focus beyond lands and resources to also address resulting outcomes as improved conditions. Plan implementation for the RCBR ecosystem will be done through an interdisciplinary ad-hoc committee which defines issues and prioritizes management actions. In addition, the vision statement developed by the ad-hoc committee will continue to provide guidance …
