Hamstring Tendons As Autograft Replacements In Acl Reconstructions: A Review Of The Literature, Jason Anderson Jan 1998

Hamstring Tendons As Autograft Replacements In Acl Reconstructions: A Review Of The Literature, Jason Anderson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Hamstring tendons have gained a great deal of acceptance in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction procedures in the 1990's, but some misconceptions concerning the ability of hamstring grafts to successfully replace ruptured ACLs still exist. More surgeons are using hamstring tendons to reconstruct ACL-deficient knees because their harvest does not disrupt the extensor mechanism of the knee. Enthusiasts of the hamstring graft believe that it promotes quicker return of quadriceps strength and knee range of motion without a prevalence of postoperative pateIIofemoral symptoms.

The purpose of this review is to dispute the concerns that exist concerning the initial tensile strength, …

A Review Of Periodization Of Strength And Its Clinical Implications To Physical Therapy, John Andrew Jan 1998

A Review Of Periodization Of Strength And Its Clinical Implications To Physical Therapy, John Andrew

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Currently no literature or studies in the physical therapy profession explore the use of periodization of strength principles. Therefore, the purpose of this independent study will be to perform a literature review of periodization of strength and how these training concepts are applicable to physical therapy.

Periodization is a strengthening technique which varies the training stimulus so that continuous gains in strength are accrued. The general progression of training is from low intensity and high volume to high intensity and low volume. To achieve these changes in intensity and volume the number of sets, repetitions, and load is periodically changed. …

Geophysical Characterization, Redox Zonation, And Contaminant Distribution At A Groundwater/Surface Water Interface, John Lendvay, W A. Sauck, M L. Mccormick, M J. Barcelona, D H. Kampbell, J T. Wilson, P Adriaens Jan 1998

Geophysical Characterization, Redox Zonation, And Contaminant Distribution At A Groundwater/Surface Water Interface, John Lendvay, W A. Sauck, M L. Mccormick, M J. Barcelona, D H. Kampbell, J T. Wilson, P Adriaens

Environmental Science

Three transects along a groundwater/surface water interface were characterized for spatial distributions of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons and geochemical conditions to evaluate the natural bioremediation potential of this environmental system. Partly on the basis of ground penetrating radar measurements, a conductive sediment layer was detected from the shore out to at least 300 m offshore which exhibited gradients in redox pairs and contaminant profiles. The cis-Dichloroethene and 1-chloroethene were predominant in the presence of elevated methane and ferrous iron concentrations and depressed sulfate and aquifer solids-bound iron concentrations. The shallow monitoring points were generally hypoxic to aerobic and exhibited values …

Patterns In Avian Community Structure And Non-Point Source Disturbance Potential Along The Land-Water Interface Of A Prairie Pothole Lake, Kristel K. Bakker, N. H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that bird community structure varies significantly between areas which are prone versus not prone to disturbance within the land-water interface of a prairie lake. On-site assessment of land cover and a Geographic Information System (GIS) with coverages of slope, soil erodability, soil hydrologic group and drainages were used to delineate sites prone and not prone to non-point source disturbance. Habitat and community attributes were examined within these site classes during the summer of 1995. While habitat differences between classes (prone and not prone) were inconclusive, results of avian community analyses indicated that …

Interactive Image Cases For Medical Problem Solving, Erika Rogers, Barb Ericson

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The development of an intelligent assistance agent for diagnostic radiology faces a number of challenges: e.g., how to gain access to the knowledge used an such visual problem solving tasks, how to operationalize it for further processing, and how to present it an the most useful manner for diagnosis. Our previous work an this domain placed an emphasis on the first two issues, and has shown that both perception and problem solving need to be supported an these types of tasks. However, the interface to the underlying intelligence in our first prototypes did not reflect how medical practitioners physically interact …
