Rise And Fall Of Debit-Credit Bookkeeping In China: History And Analysis, Shimin Chen Jan 1998

Rise And Fall Of Debit-Credit Bookkeeping In China: History And Analysis, Shimin Chen

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper presents a century-long history of the debit-credit method of double-entry bookkeeping in China. Since introduced to China at the turn of this century, debit-credit bookkeeping has gone through many years of turbulence until 1992, when the Chinese government officially designated it as the standard bookkeeping method. Rather than taking a narrow technical perspective, this paper examines many historical events that shaped bookkeeping methods in China from a broad socioeconomic and political viewpoint. The story of debit-credit bookkeeping in China exemplifies how accounting is intertwined with the political and socioeconomic environment in which it exists.

Development Of Tagging Techniques For Monitoring Fish Populations At Texas Artificial Reefs, Jan C. Culbertson, Douglas D. Peter Jan 1998

Development Of Tagging Techniques For Monitoring Fish Populations At Texas Artificial Reefs, Jan C. Culbertson, Douglas D. Peter

Gulf of Mexico Science

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has used a broad range of methodologies to monitor the social, economic, and biological impacts of artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. Social and economic issues have been addressed through charter boat and diver mail-in questionnaire surveys and on-site creel surveys. Biological issues have been investigated through hook and line tagging, diver-based visual transects, and video traps. Assessments of hydroacoustic and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) biological survey techniques are also planned for deepwater reef sites. There is also a need to develop inexpensive biological monitoring methods to track target fish populations such as …

Preliminary Evaluation Of The Use Of Phosphogypsum For Reef Substrate In The Gulf Of Mexico, David L. Nieland, Charles A. Wilson, John W. Fleeger Jan 1998

Preliminary Evaluation Of The Use Of Phosphogypsum For Reef Substrate In The Gulf Of Mexico, David L. Nieland, Charles A. Wilson, John W. Fleeger

Gulf of Mexico Science

Phosphogypsum (PG), a solid by-product of phosphoric acid production in the fertilizer industry, contains radionuclides and trace metals in concentrations which are potentially hazardous to human health and to the environment. Due to the presence of these contaminants and to the lack of safe alternative uses for PG, the industry has necessarily resorted to on-site stockpiling as the primary disposal method. Thirty-three such stockpiles, totaling millions of tons of PG, are currently extant in the Gulf of Mexico region. The environmental and economic liabilities associated with PG stockpiling has prompted continuing research into alternative beneficial uses of this solid waste …

Reef Community Stability On The Flower Garden Banks, Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Stephen R. Gittings Jan 1998

Reef Community Stability On The Flower Garden Banks, Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Stephen R. Gittings

Gulf of Mexico Science

Benthic cover and coral growth studies conducted on the coral reefs at the Flower Garden Banks since the early 1970s, as well as investigations on other aspects of biotic assemblages associated with the reefs, suggest fairly high community stability. Changes that have been observed indicate the community's resilience in response to periodic episodes of stress, which are caused primarily by natural factors (e.g., anomalously high temperatures, disease epidemics). There has been no indication of long-term environmental degradation following such events. On the whole, the reef communities appear to have remained unaltered by human activities, despite numerous isolated insults to the …

In The Title Ix Race Toward Gender Equity, The Black Female Athlete Is Left To Finish Last: The Lack Of Access For The “Invisible Woman", Tonya M. Evans

Law Faculty Scholarship

Although each of us is defined by race and gender, those of us who are neither white nor male often experience invisibility as a result of our dual subordinate status.... Black women have been disproportionately located at the lower end of the economic hierarchy and, therefore, have been unable to afford private golf, swimming, or tennis lessons. Overt racial discrimination prevented black women from gaining access to the sports participated in by white women. To the extent that the main thrust of solutions to gender inequity and a lack of adherence to Title IX mandates has been the addition of …

"O Wind, Remind Him That I Have No Child": Infertility And Feminist Jurisprudence, Linda J. Lacey Jan 1998

"O Wind, Remind Him That I Have No Child": Infertility And Feminist Jurisprudence, Linda J. Lacey

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Feminists have constructed a "grand theory" of infertility and new reproductive techniques that has little to do with reality. Much of the discussion of reproductive technology is written in highly abstract, philosophical terms, rather than in the more experiential, narrative style which characterizes much of feminist jurisprudence. The infertile woman is generally voiceless and invisible in the telling of this story; when she does appear she is dismissed or criticized. This Article is an attempt to begin dialogue which incorporates her perspective into the discussion.
