The Effect Of Government Size On Economic Performance: An Empirical Investigation On A Group Of Developing Countries Using A Panel Data Approach, Tayseer Al-Sumadi, Basudeb Biswas
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This paper examines the effect of government size, measured by the ratio of government consumption expenditures to gross domestic product, GDP, on the rate of growth of per capita GDP. Our sample includes 30 low-income and middle-income developing countries over the period 1970-90. We use a panel data approach to avoid the shortcomings of the cross-country models often used in such an analysis. The results indicate government size has a highly significant negative influence on the rate of economic growth. /

A Theory Of Health And Health Policy, Lok Sang Ho
A Theory Of Health And Health Policy, Lok Sang Ho
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
This paper builds a model of health production that relates functional health and the health stock in a dynamic way. This distinction of the concept of health has been made in the health literature but in different contexts but has so far not been related properly. The paper uses the concept of household production and household utility maximization, and household behavior is seen to interact with providers of health care services, given a budget constraint, a time constraint, and various technological constraints including household consumption technology. Implications for public policy are drawn from the model.
Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of The Hawaiian Hawk, Curtis R. Griffin, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas S. Baskett
Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of The Hawaiian Hawk, Curtis R. Griffin, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas S. Baskett
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
We studied the ecology of the endangered Hawaiian Hawk (Buteo solitarius) on the island of Hawaii for three breeding seasons. Their breeding strategy is a prime example of a K-selected species characteristic of many birds in tropical environments: clutch size was one and brood-rearing was among the longest reported for any diurnal raptor. Twenty-eight nests were found in a variety of native and exotic habitats. Incubation lasted 38 days, nestlings fledged after 59-63 days, and parents cared for fledglings for an average of 30.2 weeks, which was 2.5 to 10 times longer than similar-size temperate zone raptors. Males …

Diacylglycerol pyrophosphate (DGPP) is involved in a putative novel lipid signaling pathway. DGPP phosphatase (DGPP phosphohydrolase) is a membrane-associated 34-kDa enzyme fromSaccharomyces cerevisiae which catalyzes the dephosphorylation of DGPP to yield phosphatidate (PA) and then catalyzes the dephosphorylation of PA to yield diacylglycerol. Amino acid sequence information derived from DGPP phosphatase was used to identify and isolate the DPP1(diacylglycerol pyrophosphatephosphatase) gene encoding the enzyme. Multicopy plasmids containing the DPP1 gene directed a 10-fold overexpression of DGPP phosphatase activity in S. cerevisiae. The heterologous expression of the S. cerevisiae DPP1 gene in Sf-9 insect cells resulted in a …

Male-specific bacteriophage (MSB) densities were determined in animal and human fecal wastes to assess their potential impact on aquatic environments. Fecal samples (1,031) from cattle, chickens, dairy cows, dogs, ducks, geese, goats, hogs, horses, seagulls, sheep, and humans as well as 64 sewerage samples were examined for MSB. All animal species were found to harbor MSB, although the great majority excreted these viruses at very low levels. The results from this study demonstrate that in areas affected by both human and animal wastes, wastewater treatment plants are the principal contributors of MSB to fresh, estuarine, and marine waters.

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
The contemporary practice of psychology requires a prudent balance of traditional and emerging communication methods. Interpersonal interactions in the context of human relationship (e.g., speech, emotional expressions, and nonverbal gestures) have been a vital part of emotional healing throughout many centuries, and research findings in the 1990s underscore the importance of relational factors in effective psychological interventions (Whiston & Sexton, 1993). In addition to the time honored interpersonal communication methods of professional psychology, rapid technological advances have propelled psychologists into another sphere of communication. Today's professional psychologist is increasingly expected to attain mastery in both of these communication methods-the very …
Providing Culturally Sensitive Services To Latino Clients: A Case Study Of A Non-Profit Organization, Darlene L. Piña
Providing Culturally Sensitive Services To Latino Clients: A Case Study Of A Non-Profit Organization, Darlene L. Piña
Clinical Sociology Review
This paper describes an evaluation of a non-profit human service organization's attempts to provide culturally sensitive services. Systems and constructivist theoretical perspectives are used to examine the problematic of providing effective and meaningful counseling and educational services to Spanish-speaking, Latino immigrant clients The two models of achieving cultural sensitivity—cultural compatibility and cultural competency—are assessed. Findings reveal that service was hindered by the ghettoization of Latino providers, external constraints on service delivery, role conflicts among Latino providers, and institutional silence and uncertainty about multicultural issues. These problems indicate that culturally sensitive service requires that culturally compatible services be incorporated in an …
