Does The Volatility Of Exchange Rate Hamper Hong Kong's Domestic Exports?, Ching Yi, Bonita Leung

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Since the collapse of the Bretton Woods system and the advent of the floating exchange rate regime in the spring of 1973, there has been a great concern over the volatility of exchange rate and its impacts on the volume of international trade. This paper aims at examining whether the volatility of exchange rate hampers Hong Kong’s domestic exports. In this paper, I use the quarterly data from the first quarter of 1984 to the third quarter of 1997 and select five major trading partner countries of Hong Kong to reflect three diverse regions: North American, Europe and the Pacific …

醫療人員對醫院內環氧乙烷管理的重視與滿意度調查, 燦煮 蘇, 月枝 陳

Journal of Medical Education

Partnerships For Progress: Summer Youth Nutrition Programs, Lisa A. Guion

Journal of Extension

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service 4-H EFNEP program, in collaboration with Out For Lunch, implemented youth nutrition programs in nine counties during the summer of 1997. These experiential programs were designed to provide limited resource youth with information on the fundamentals of proper nutrition and contribute to their personal development and overall well-being. Collaboration played a large role in the success of all the programs, both internally among Extension professionals, and with external partners. External partners provided various types of resources that enabled the program to serve a total of 1,469 youth in the nine counties. In the article, …

Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee Dec 1998

Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee

Theses

This thesis is an exploration of possibilities of the translation of Chinese characters into furniture. It is not just the two dimensional image of the character that I wish to interpret into three dimensions, but I intend that the functions and uses of the furniture are to be the meaning of the word. The final pieces are intended to be recognized as to their meaning by anyone literate in Chinese character forms. Furniture that has both form and meaning will create new possibilities for furniture's role in the environment by having this extra dimension.

Molecular & Physical Characterization Of Threonine Dehydrogenase From Serratia Marcescens, Michael Wetherell Dec 1998

Molecular & Physical Characterization Of Threonine Dehydrogenase From Serratia Marcescens, Michael Wetherell

Theses

Threonine dehydrogenase has been purified from Serretia marcescens 450 fold to obtain 1300 micrograms of enzyme from 15 grams of cells. The amino-terminus has been sequenced and places it in a class with medium chain alcohol dehydrogenases from both Z.mobilus and E.coli. The native enzyme is a dimer of 35.6 kD sub-units containing approximately 324 amino acids. The gene structure of the enzyme is dissimilar from that of the E.coli TDH and may represent a mutation of an alcohol dehydrogenase with possible preference to propanol.

Acquisition Of Observing Responses With Delayed Conditioned Reinforcement, Gregory A. Lieving Dec 1998

Acquisition Of Observing Responses With Delayed Conditioned Reinforcement, Gregory A. Lieving

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Six pigeons were trained to key peck for 3-s access to mixed grain on a multiple variable-interval 60-s extinction schedule. The schedule then was changed to a mixed variable-interval 60-s extinction schedule. Simultaneously, a treadle was introduced into the chamber. For 3 pigeons, the stimulus correlated previously with the variable-interval schedule could be produced by treadle pressing (i.e., an observing response) on a tandem fixed-ratio 1 differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior 10-s schedule. For the other 3 pigeons, no contingency was implemented for treadle pressing. Treadle pressing was established equally in the presence and absence of the observing contingency. The results did not extend …

Fixed -Interval Timeout From Avoidance With Humans, Janet L. Emmendorfer Dec 1998

Fixed -Interval Timeout From Avoidance With Humans, Janet L. Emmendorfer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

On fixed-interval (FI) schedules of reinforcement, humans and other animals often have different response patterns. For example, the pattern typically associated with animals is the scallop: a pause followed by a gradual acceleration in responding. Humans generally show terminal-minimum (i.e., pause until the end of the interval, then make 1 or 2 responses) or constant-rate patterns. There have been numerous investigations of the variables that control such different response patterns. The most common variables in those studies are instructions, verbal ability, response cost, concurrent tasks, and food and points as reinforcers. The purpose of the present experiments was to investigate …

Processing Resources, Cautiousness, Memory Self -Efficacy, And Age Differences In Free Recall, Wei Huang Dec 1998

Processing Resources, Cautiousness, Memory Self -Efficacy, And Age Differences In Free Recall, Wei Huang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Both experimental and individual-differences approaches were used in the present study to investigate the effects of processing resources, cautiousness, and memory self-efficacy on adult age differences in free recall performance. A total of 80 young college students (mean age = 23 years) were used for the experimental manipulations; 40 older adults (mean age = 75 years) served as a comparison group. The experimental manipulations were based on a 2 (sex) by 2 (processing speed) by 2 (cautiousness) by 2 (working memory) mixed design. Cautiousness was manipulated by monetary incentive and punishment. Age-related reduction in working memory capacity was simulated by …
