Vegetation Analysis: A Graphical Analysis Of Plant Succession In Desert Communities Affected By Fire, Jeff Lantow Oct 1998

Vegetation Analysis: A Graphical Analysis Of Plant Succession In Desert Communities Affected By Fire, Jeff Lantow

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Mojave Desert is affected by fire every year. With each fire comes the removal of old growth and, in its place, new growth – consisting primarily of those species which thrive in disturbed areas. The focus of my research is to look at plant communities that have been disturbed by fire, and examine the successional pathway of these disturbed environments. The seven environments I analyzed were burned within the last twenty years and are found in the Coleogyne ramosissima ecotone throughout the Spring Mountain range near Las Vegas, Nevada. The data was collected with randomly chosen circle plots in …

Stachybotrys: Is Nevada At Risk?, Terrylynn C. Foley Oct 1998

Stachybotrys: Is Nevada At Risk?, Terrylynn C. Foley

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Stachybotrys chartarum (atra) is a toxigenic fungus that is known to adversely impact the health of animals. Until recently, there have only been a few documented clinical reports linking Stachybotrys chartarum to human health effects. Scientists are increasingly convinced that Stachybotrys and its metabolites are responsible for several adverse health effects experienced by people all over the world, although conclusive proof has yet to be established. All the physical requirements needed for indoor Stachybotrys sporulation and growth is provided through water leaks (plumbing, roof or ceiling), flood events, nutrient sources (cellulose and nitrogen), pH, and temperature(23° - 28°C). Stachybotrys has …

Lead Shot Concentration In Soil At The Overton Wildlife Management Area, Nevada, George R. Bertoty Oct 1998

Lead Shot Concentration In Soil At The Overton Wildlife Management Area, Nevada, George R. Bertoty

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

During the spring of 1998, soil samples were collected from two areas at the Overton Wildlife Management Area (OWMA), located in the Moapa Valley of Clark County, Nevada. Lead shot has been banned for the hunting of waterfowl since 1986 but is still legal for upland game hunting. Both types of hunting occur at OWMA. One area sampled is a cultivated field and serves primarily as a dove hunting area. The other area is primarily a waterfowl hunting area and is flooded during the waterfowl-hunting season. Lead shot was recovered from 83% of the samples from the dove hunting area, …

A Strategic Analysis Of The Rocky Flats Cleanup, Patrick Mccann Oct 1998

A Strategic Analysis Of The Rocky Flats Cleanup, Patrick Mccann

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site is located in Golden, Colorado. It is situated on 384 acres in a 6,550-acre natural preserve. Rocky Flats ended its original mission in 1989, after raids on the site by both the FBI and the EPA for illegal dumping and other environmental violations. Since then the site has been scheduled for cleanup. This thesis will provide background information on the site and on the company hired to perform the cleanup. It also provides an evaluation of some key policies regarding the cleanup procedures. Since the end of the cold war, the production of nuclear …

Bacterial Stress Responses To 1-Megahertz Pulsed Ultrasound In The Presence Of Microbubbles, Amy Cheng Vollmer, Sylvia D. Sakyiama Kwakye , '98, Matthew Evan Halpern , '98, E. Carr Everbach Oct 1998

Bacterial Stress Responses To 1-Megahertz Pulsed Ultrasound In The Presence Of Microbubbles, Amy Cheng Vollmer, Sylvia D. Sakyiama Kwakye , '98, Matthew Evan Halpern , '98, E. Carr Everbach

Engineering Faculty Works

Members of a panel of stress-responsive biosensors have been used to study the effect of megahertz frequency ultrasound onEscherichia coli. Insonification causes acoustic cavitation, the collapse of oscillating microbubbles in solution, which can damage bacterial cells. A focused 1-MHz ultrasound transducer, capable of generating a spatial peak pulse average intensity of 500 W/cm2, was used to treat liquid bacterial cultures. Stress-responsive promoters fused to luxCDABE allowed the continuous measurement of light produced as a result of protein damage, DNA damage, oxidative stress, and membrane perturbation. A promoter responsive to ammonia limitation was not transcriptionally activated under test conditions. In contrast …

Implementing The Oslo Accords, Edward Bennett Miller Oct 1998

Implementing The Oslo Accords, Edward Bennett Miller

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article argues that a stable and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) cannot be achieved without a shared commitment to fundamental values such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. It critiques the current peace process for neglecting these principles and instead prioritizing economic growth and political expediency. The analysis emphasizes that the PA's failure to establish a functioning judiciary, its disregard for human rights, and its authoritarian governance undermine the prospects for long-term stability and peace in the region. The article advocates for a new approach to the peace process that prioritizes democratization and …

Cabining Freedom: A Comparative Study Of Lesbian And Gay Rights In The United States And Canada, Credence Fogo Oct 1998

Cabining Freedom: A Comparative Study Of Lesbian And Gay Rights In The United States And Canada, Credence Fogo

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the divergent approaches of Canada and the United States in addressing gay and lesbian equality, highlighting how their differing legal frameworks and cultural values shape the protection of rights. While Canada, under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its Section 1 balancing test, has expanded relationship rights for sexual minorities, the U.S. has taken a more fragmented approach, emphasizing individual liberties over social rights. The analysis underscores the tension between Canada's communitarianism and the U.S.'s individualistic legal culture in advancing LGBTQ+ rights.

Intergenerational Co-Residence And Children's Incomes, Thomas A. Dunn, John W. Phillips Oct 1998

Intergenerational Co-Residence And Children's Incomes, Thomas A. Dunn, John W. Phillips

Center for Policy Research

This paper examines co-residence arrangements between older parents and their adult children. We sketch a model of the co-residence choice that accounts for the preferences of the parent and the child and incorporates parental altruism and demands for housing, goods, and privacy. The model predicts that poorer, unmarried or childless siblings are more likely than their siblings to co-reside. The empirical analysis exploits the information provided by respondents in the Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD) survey about all of their children living in and outside their household. Indeed, we find that poorer siblings are more likely …

Estate Taxes, Life Insurance, And Small Business, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, John W. Phillips, Harvey S. Rosen Oct 1998

Estate Taxes, Life Insurance, And Small Business, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, John W. Phillips, Harvey S. Rosen

Center for Policy Research

One criticism of the estate tax is that it prevents the owners of family businesses from passing their enterprises onto their children. The problem is that it may be difficult to pay estate taxes without liquidating the business. A natural question is why individuals with such concerns do not purchase enough life insurance to meet their estate tax liabilities. This paper examines whether and how people use life insurance to deal with the estate tax. We find that, other things being the same, business owners purchase more life insurance than other individuals. However, on the margin, their insurance purchases are …
