Agricultural Water Quality Index Field Handout, Jeffrey Cooper, Richard Rediske, Melvin Northup, Mark Thogerson, Jonathan Van Denend Jan 1998

Agricultural Water Quality Index Field Handout, Jeffrey Cooper, Richard Rediske, Melvin Northup, Mark Thogerson, Jonathan Van Denend

Scientific Technical Reports

The Agricultural Water Quality Index (AWQI) is an assessment tool designed for use in agroecosystems. Most existing environmental indices and assessment tools focus on the stream channel and/or riparian zone (the area between the channel and active land use). In contrast, the AWQI places an emphasis on land use and soil types that play a significant role in hydrologic cycles and water quality characteristics within the watershed.

The AWQI is designed to be used by agricultural technicians with limited experience in aquatic ecology; however, it does assume a reasonable background in soil characteristics. This index is intended for use during …

Community-Based Education And Service: The Hpsisn Experience, Sherril B. Glemmon, Barbara A. Holland, Anu F. Shinnamon, Beth A. Morris

Partnerships/Community

Health services delivery is increasingly shifting to community-based settings. The competencies required of future health professionals require a shift in their educational preparation. Service leaning is suggested as an educational method with the potential to reform health professions education in tandem with the changes occurring in the health services delivery. The Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation Program (HPSISN), a US demonstration project of service learning in the health professions, examines the impact of service leaning on students, faculty, communities and institutions across a wide array of universities and community settings. This paper describes the evaluation of the …

Service-Learning In The Community - Are We Ready For The Journey?, William Finger Jan 1998

Service-Learning In The Community - Are We Ready For The Journey?, William Finger

Partnerships/Community

It's late Sunday afternoon in downtown Raleigh, NC, in a low concrete building next to the railroad tracks. We are working in a small room where the 40 residents will eat supper in about an hour, when a church group serves the only full meal of the day for many of the residents. We have folded the tables and pushed them against the wall. Most of the residents are watching television in the only other common room in the building or lying on their bunks in the men's or women's dorm, each a single large room. A few are in …

Sex Differences In The Relations Between Sex Guilt And Sexual Experience, Melanie M. Brown Jan 1998

Sex Differences In The Relations Between Sex Guilt And Sexual Experience, Melanie M. Brown

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine whether sex differences exist in the relations between sex guilt and sexual behavior. Past research has examined variables that affect sex guilt and found that sex guilt and sexual behavior are inversely related. This study specifically examined sex differences and how they affect this relation. The participants were 163 male and female undergraduate students at Eastern Illinois University. Mosher's revised Sex guilt Inventory and Paulson and Sputa's Sexual Behavior Frequency survey were administered along with a biographical data sheet.

Bivariate correlation analyses revealed that sex guilt and sexual behavior were inversely related. …

Validity Of The Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale With A Rural Sample, Julie A. Lindstrom Jan 1998

Validity Of The Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale With A Rural Sample, Julie A. Lindstrom

Masters Theses

The problem that was investigated in the current study was that the norms of the Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale (RADS) (Reynolds, 1987) may have had limited generalizability to students attending Paris High School and Mayo Middle School in rural Paris, Illinois because it was normed on "normal" subjects in only one urban/suburban school district in Wisconsin. The purposes of the current study were to establish Paris norms for the RADS and to fulfill Paris' need for an instrument to efficiently and inexpensively assess students suspected of having depression. This investigator hypothesized that the norms on the RADS would differ between …

Examiner Errors In Scoring The Wisc-Iii Vocabulary, Comprehension, And Similarities Subtests, Ryan L. Neitzel

Masters Theses

Examiner errors when scoring the WISC-III Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Similarities subtests were examined. Twenty-one graduate students enrolled in school psychology training programs and twenty-three certified school psychologist practitioners participated in scoring a constructed record form containing both standard responses (items clearly accounted for in the WISC-III Manual) and ambiguous responses (items not specifically accounted for in the WISC-III Manual). Descriptive Statistics demonstrated that graduate students and practitioners made errors on all subtests and item types. However, the Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Similarities ambiguous responses contained the most errors. Furthermore, Analysis of Variance demonstrated that for each subtest, ambiguous responses …

Heartworm And Lungworms In Illinois' Canids And Their Possible Effect On Coyote Condition And Reproduction, David G. Gregory

Masters Theses

This study focuses on the prevalence of heartworm and lungworms in Illinois' canid species, and the effect that they may have on condition (body weight, kidney fat, marrow fat) and reproduction (placental scars) on coyote populations. A total of 1,150 coyotes (Canis latrans), 2,269 domestic dogs, 47 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), and 2 gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) were examined. Prevalence of heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) averaged 17.8% in coyotes, 3.0% in domestic dogs, 2.0% in red foxes, and 0% in gray foxes. Domestic dogs not receiving any type of prophylactic treatment had a higher prevalence (12.5%) of heartworms than dogs on …

Behavioral Economics Analysis Of Redistributive Legal Rules, Christine Jolls Jan 1998

Behavioral Economics Analysis Of Redistributive Legal Rules, Christine Jolls

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Essay offers a behavioral economic analysis of redistributive legal rules. Redistributive legal rules are rules chosen for their effects in shifting wealth from high-income to low-income individuals(progressive redistribution). The desirability of such rules has been the subject of intense debate within the legal community. Many law and economics scholars have urged that legal rules be chosen solely with an eye towards Kaldor-Hicks efficiency (which I will call simply "efficiency" for the remainder of this Essay); these scholars often urge that distributional considerations be addressed (if they are to be addressed at all) exclusively through the tax and welfare systems. …

"The Past Never Vanishes": A Contextual Critique Of The Existing Indian Family Doctrine, Lorie M. Graham

American Indian Law Review

I don't know my own culture, . . . I am going to need your help in understanding . . . . Teach me, teach my children. These are the words of a forty-three-year-old Navajo woman on her first visit back to the Navajo Nation since her birth. Stolen as an infant, along with her twin brother, and adopted out on the black market, she was finally reunited with her family and community. Her journey home comes at a time when Native American nations are fighting proposed legislation and court-made rules that seek to limit the reach of the Indian …

State Property Taxation Of Tribal Fee Lands Located Within Reservation Boundaries: Reconsidering County Of Yakima V. Confederated Tribes & Bands Of The Yakima Indian Nation And Leech Lake Band Of Chippewa Indians V. Cass County, Scott A. Taylor

American Indian Law Review

Although once the owners of the North American continent, native peoples and the governments that represent them now own only a small percentage of the land within the current United States. Many tribes are interested in reacquiring lands that once belonged to them. Tribes, as governments and as legal entities, have the power to acquire lands through purchase. When tribes buy lands from private owners, the tax status of the lands becomes an immediate issue. All of the fifty states levy an annual ad valorem real property tax. States, constantly vigilant in protecting their tax revenue, readily attempt to tax …

Indian Fishing Rights: Aftermath Of The Fox Decision And The Year 2000, Karen Ferguson Jan 1998

Indian Fishing Rights: Aftermath Of The Fox Decision And The Year 2000, Karen Ferguson

American Indian Law Review

The ongoing Indian fishing rights debate in northern Michigan is intensifying as a 1985 court ordered consent agreement nears its year 2000 expiration date. Many of the local citizenry are concerned that the debate may turn violent as it did in the 1970s. In the 1970s there was fierce competition between Indians and non-Indians over a fish resource that was becoming depleted at an alarming rate. While pollution of the Great Lakes and the presence of non-native parasites were more likely the cause of the depleted stocks, the sport fishermen blamed Indian gill netting for the problem. In recent years, …
