The Impact Of Learning Environment And Gender On Client Satisfaction With Counseling, Denise Thornhill Jan 1998

The Impact Of Learning Environment And Gender On Client Satisfaction With Counseling, Denise Thornhill

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated whether clients of different genders perceive the counselor differently when they work with a counselor whose therapeutic interventions correspond with the client's learning style. The sample consisted of 380 undergraduate students from universities in three geographical regions of the country. Participants were randomly assigned to groups based on learning style and gender. The three independent variables in the study were: (1) learning environment; (2) match between client learning style and the learning environment provided by the counselor; and (3) client gender. The Learning Style Inventory (Kolb, 1985) was used to measure client learning style. Client satisfaction, the …

Adenoma Characteristics At First Colonoscopy As Predictors Of Adenoma Recurrence And Characteristics At Follow-Up, Rosalind U. Van Stolk, Gerald J. Beck, John A. Baron, Robert Haile, Robert Summers Jan 1998

Adenoma Characteristics At First Colonoscopy As Predictors Of Adenoma Recurrence And Characteristics At Follow-Up, Rosalind U. Van Stolk, Gerald J. Beck, John A. Baron, Robert Haile, Robert Summers

Dartmouth Scholarship

All patients with colorectal adenomas may not require identical follow-up. We aimed to determine if adenoma characteristics at initial colonoscopy could predict adenoma recurrence or characteristics at follow-up. The number of adenomas and the size, type, and degree of atypia in 479 patients in a polyp prevention trial were evaluated as predictors of the same characteristics at follow-up using odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine if several baseline characteristics were simultaneously associated with outcome.

Standards Of Review In Texas., W. Wendell Hall Jan 1998

Standards Of Review In Texas., W. Wendell Hall

St. Mary's Law Journal

This Article presents a substantial and comprehensive update of the standards of review applied by Texas appellate courts. It focuses on appellate standards for reviewing trial court rulings on pretrial, trial, and posttrial proceedings. Standards of review distribute power within the judicial branch by defining the relationship between trial and appellate courts. These standards “frame the issues, define the depth of review, assign power among judicial actors, and declare the proper materials to review.” Sometimes a trial court’s errors are so egregious and harmful that reversing the trial court is relatively simple. When the trial court’s error is only marginal …

St. Mary's Law Journal

This Comment analyzes the Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 166a(i) for a “no evidence” motion and discusses its likely application in Texas courts. Part II reviews summary judgment practice in federal and Texas state courts in order to determine the likely construction of the new rule. Part III discusses Rule 166a(i) and explores the role of litigation reform in shaping the no-evidence motion. This part also addresses the procedural shortcomings of the new rule and compares Rule 166a(i) with federal summary judgment practice. Part IV assesses whether Rule 166a(i) violates the Texas Constitution by denying citizens the right to a …

Feminism And Defending Men On Death Row Symposium: Thoughts On Death Penalty Issues 25 Years After Furman V. Georgia., Phyllis L. Crocker Jan 1998

Feminism And Defending Men On Death Row Symposium: Thoughts On Death Penalty Issues 25 Years After Furman V. Georgia., Phyllis L. Crocker

St. Mary's Law Journal

In this Essay I explore the relationship between being a feminist and representing men on death row. It is appropriate to engage in this inquiry in considering how the law has developed in the twenty-five years since Furman v. Georgia. During that time both Furman and the advent of feminist legal theory have required a restructuring in the way we think about two fundamental legal questions: for death penalty jurisprudence, how and why we sentence individuals to death; and for feminist jurisprudence, how the law views crimes of violence against women. The relationship between these two developments becomes apparent when …

Governance And Hiv - Government-Civil Society Interface: An Aspect Of Governance Critical To An Effective Response, Fernando T. Aldaba, Josefa Petilla Jan 1998

Governance And Hiv - Government-Civil Society Interface: An Aspect Of Governance Critical To An Effective Response, Fernando T. Aldaba, Josefa Petilla

Economics Department Faculty Publications

There exists a dynamic interrelationship between good governance, a successful government organisation (GO) - civil society organisation (CSO) interface and an appropriate response to the HIV-AIDS epidemic. Good governance creates an environment that promotes collaboration among various sectors of society. Appropriate response to the epidemic, on the other hand, are engendered by positive interfaces and cooperation between key sectors of a community. The case study will specifically examine three examples of interface: the Philippine National AIDS Council (PNAC) at the national level; and for the local implementation, Olongapo city, and the province of Palawan.

Characteristics of good governance that promote …

A Comparison Of Adolescent Drug Use Between Urban And Rural Populations, Randall G. Rhodes Jan 1998

A Comparison Of Adolescent Drug Use Between Urban And Rural Populations, Randall G. Rhodes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prior research has found extensive levels of drug use among the adolescent population from standard metropolitan statistical areas. The reviestudies show high drug use rates in the urban minority population, particularly in regards to cocaine use. Also, arrestee data examining law violations compared to drug usage and the age of initial usage correlates to the onset of delinquent behavior in the juvenile population. There are relatively few studies that have examined rural populations in regards to drug usage rates in comparison to urban populations. This study compares, through descriptive statistical analysis, arrestee data from the rural adolescent population of Cape …

Educational Technology And State Reform: Examining The First-Year Impact Of Louisiana's State Technology Policy On Public School Districts., Jeffrey Paul Gagne Jan 1998

Educational Technology And State Reform: Examining The First-Year Impact Of Louisiana's State Technology Policy On Public School Districts., Jeffrey Paul Gagne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the 1990's educational technology became a major educational policy issue for every state (White, 1997; Education Commission of the States, 1997; National Council of State Legislators, 1996; Trotter, 1997). By early 1998, all 50 states had state-level technology plans in various stages of implementation, and state funding for educational technologies was rapidly increasing across the country (Trotter, 1997). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of recently enacted Louisiana state-level technology reforms on public school district technology efforts between the 1996--97 and 1997--98 school years. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect data, creating …

Applications Of Band Ratioing At Fort Irwin, California., Alexander Wright Taylor Jan 1998

Applications Of Band Ratioing At Fort Irwin, California., Alexander Wright Taylor

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes the results of two projects that demonstrate the power of band ratioing of remote sensing data. The first method, Band Ratio Differencing (BRD), challenges the more traditional techniques for detecting environmental disturbance of the surface in and terrains. These traditional techniques are inadequate because they cannot identify the nature of the change (physical, chemical, biological) or the processes (natural, anthropogenic) involved in causing the change. In contrast, BRD of Landsat TM data has the advantage of providing information about changes in the composition of alluvial surfaces. These compositional changes, when combined with empirical field data provides insight …

Effects Of Selected Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons On Cell Proliferation, Protein Phosphorylation, And Intracellular Calcium Concentration In Lepomis Macrochirus., Helen Runnels Connelly

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) have been demonstrated to affect signal transduction in higher vertebrates. In this research, the freshwater species of fish, Lepomis macrochirus (bluegill) was used to test the effects of a 14-day diet of PAH on lymphocyte signal transduction. PAH tested included: 2-aminoanthracene (2-AA), 2-methylnaphthalene (2-MN), 9,10-dimethylanthracene (9,10-DMA), and a mixture of these three compounds (MIX). Individual compounds were tested at a total PAH dose of 3.1 $\pm$ 0.01mg over the 14 day period. The MIX diet was a total PAH dose of 0.13 $\pm$ 0.01mg 2-AA, 0.19 + 0.01mg 9,10-DMA, and 0.22 $\pm$ 0.02mg 2-MN over the …

Living Arrangements Of The Elderly In The United States: Comparing Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, And Asians' Households., Kiyomi Ando Jan 1998

Living Arrangements Of The Elderly In The United States: Comparing Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, And Asians' Households., Kiyomi Ando

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

My dissertation analyzed the living arrangements of the elderly, focusing on differences across gender and racial/ethnic lines. Drawing upon rational choice and family solidarity theoretical perspectives. I derived hypotheses dealing with the effects of individual resources, cultural characteristics, and geographic context on the elderly's living arrangements. These hypotheses were empirically tested using logistic regression models to estimate the odds of the elderly choosing from among three options of living arrangements--independent living, joint living, and dependent living. Separate models were applied to non-Hispanic white, African American, Hispanic, and Asian subsamples. Data were from the 1990 Census Public Use Sample (PUMS-L). The …

Temporal Variation In Larval Fish Condition Indices., Michael John Burger Jan 1998

Temporal Variation In Larval Fish Condition Indices., Michael John Burger

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A sensitive methodology for the determination of RNA and DNA concentrations was developed which allowed for the quantification of nanogram amounts of both DNA and RNA. The method uses a combination of thiazole orange, a non-specific nucleic acid stain, and the RNA degrading enzyme RNase. Thiazole orange had high fluorescence yield. The fluorescence was additive for combinations of RNA and DNA. The addition of proteinase-K increased the fluorescence of the tissue sample by 100%. Recovery of nucleic acid standards added to tissue extracts yielded $\sim$100% recovery. The method is compatible with assays for protein concentration and electron transport system (ETS) …

Assessing Applicant "Fit" Within The Selection Process: Which Interviewer Perceptions Matter?, Dawn Ebe Haptonstahl Jan 1998

Assessing Applicant "Fit" Within The Selection Process: Which Interviewer Perceptions Matter?, Dawn Ebe Haptonstahl

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The research literature has noted that organizations are moving beyond simply hiring individuals with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) that fulfill the requirements of the job--employers are also looking for people who can fit in with a particular work group or even an entire organization. This study tested an exploratory model that predicted recruiter selection decisions from their evaluations of applicants' person-job (P-J), person-group (P-G), and person-organization (P-O) fit. The model also postulated that P-G and P-O fit would be predicted by the perceived congruence (similarity) of work values between applicants and groups/organizations, Hypotheses were field-tested with 64 …

The subjects were 431 individuals with mild and moderate mental retardation in state schools and developmental centers in Texas and Louisiana. Almost 65% of the sample met the cutoff for further assessment using the newly established criteria, while approximately 40% of the sample had elevations on two or more of the subscales. Critical items were identified for the Schizophrenia, Affective Disorders, Somatoform Disorders, and Adjustment Disorders subscales. No significant differences were noted for gender with respect to the subscales. …

Predicting Driving Ability In Alzheimer's Disease Patients., Judith Rosemary O'Jile Jan 1998

Predicting Driving Ability In Alzheimer's Disease Patients., Judith Rosemary O'Jile

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies have shown that individuals with Alzheimer's disease have a greater number of automobile crashes than normal elderly controls. Assessment of driving ability is usually conducted by use of an on-the-road examination. These examinations are costly, time intensive, and sometimes dangerous. Finding other measures that are predictive of driving ability will enable screening of patients to decrease the number of on-road examinations. Alzheimer's disease patients and normal elderly control subjects were administered neuropsychological measures as well as the Driver Performance Test (DPT) and Driver Risk Index (DRI), both videotaped tests of driving knowledge and risk assessment. Driving histories based on …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of oral vaccination with radiation-attenuated Strongylus vulgaris larvae on the cytokine responses of ponies to oral challenge with S. vulgaris was examined. Message was quantified using RT-PCR by interpolation against a plasmid-derived standard curve. PCR product was detected using the Perkin-Elmer QPCR System 5000. Standard curves were analyzed with a two parameter exponential rise to maximum fit of the data. By altering the cycling parameters to maintain $\beta$-actin amplification within its exponential phase, $\beta$-actin was used as a normalization factor. The assay resolves 2 fold changes in message, has a linear dynamic range on the order of 3 …

Evaluation Of The Toxicological Consequences Of Dietary Exposure To Individual Classes Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Or A Mixture In The Fischer-344 Rat., Mary Durand Boudreau Jan 1998

Evaluation Of The Toxicological Consequences Of Dietary Exposure To Individual Classes Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Or A Mixture In The Fischer-344 Rat., Mary Durand Boudreau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is special concern about the potential health effects of by-products released into the environment after combustion or conversion of fossil fuels. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), while initially released largely into the atmosphere, are subsequently deposited in soil and water and on foods. Although the significance of PAH contamination with regard to environmentally caused diseases and cancer in humans is difficult to estimate, it is suggested that the potential hazards may be underestimated. In an effort to understand the potential adverse health effects of PAHs, a comprehensive study was undertaken to determine the metabolic fate of selected PAHs as individual …

Antimycobacterial Natural Products From Higher Plants., Charles Lowell Cantrell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two-hundred and thirty crude organic extracts from 118 plant species distributed among ten families of higher plants have been evaluated for antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H$\sb{37}$Rv) and M. avium using the BACTEC 460 radiorespirometric assay. At 100 $\mu$g/ml, twenty-four and ten of the extracts caused more than 95% inhibition of growth of M. tuberculosis and M. avium, respectively. Bioactive chromatographic fractions of Borrichia frutescens (Asteraceae) provided two new triterpenes and one known cycloartenol. In radiorespirometric bioassays against M. tuberculosis, the new (24R)-24,25-epoxycycloartan-3-one and the known (24R)-24,25-epoxycycloartan-3$\beta$-ol exhibited minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 8 $\mu$g/ml. In contrast, the new (23R)-3-oxolanosta-8,24-dien-23-ol …

Dietary Nitrogen And Energy Metabolism In The Ruminant: Effect Of Source Of Nitrogen., Angelica Maris Chapa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of dietary nitrogen on the energy status of ruminants and the feasibility of using L-carnitine to prevent the negative effects associated with overfeeding nitrogen. The objectives of the first experiment were to monitor the nitrogen and energy status of cows grazing ryegrass pastures through the measurement of key blood metabolites and insulin and to determine the protein supplementation scheme which would maximize milk yield and maintain plasma urea nitrogen levels below dangerous levels. In the first experiment, the protein supplement that supplied excess total protein exerted negative effects on body condition and …
