Neuronal Differentiation In The Cerebral Cortexof The Rat: A Golgi-Cox Study, Necdet Demi̇r, Ramazan Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The development of cerebral cortex neurons has been studied in different stages of pre- and postnatal periods of rats. In order to show the neuronal processes, the Golgi-Cox impregnation technique was used. The first neuronal process development was observed in the cranial and caudal poles of the cerebral cortex during the 15th prenatal day and continued spreading from the lateral regions and poles towards the dorsocentral regions of the hemispheres. The cells which showed the first impregnation in the cerebral cortex, were bipolar cells and their bodies were located in the deep regions of the hemisphere wall. Primitive multipolar cells, …

Characterisation Of A Polyclonal Antiserumagaints Ubiquitin And Its Use In The Investigationof Ubiquitin Conjugate Distribution In Normaland Stressed 3t3-Li Cells, İbrahim Pi̇ri̇m

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Antiserum against ubiquitin was used to identify ubiquitin conjugates in 3T3- LI cells, and to investigate changes in the amount and distribution of these conjugates in cells subjected to stress. Stress was induced by incubation with canavanine, an amino acid analogue, and by exposure of cells to temperatures of 43°C (heat shock). SDS-PAGE, followed by immunoblotting, produced no observable change in ubiquitin conjugation with the canavanine as used in this protocol.Heat shock, in a variety of different exposure protocols, appeared to produce an increase in a wide spectrum of ubiquitin conjugates of molecular weight>70kd. The conjugates wereresent in the …

Purification And Characterization Of Pediocin F, Abacteriocin Produced By Pediococcus Acidilacticif, Özlem Osmanagaoğlu, Ufuk Gündüz, Yavuz Beyatli, Cumhur Çökmüş

Turkish Journal of Biology

In this work, Pediococcus acidilactici F isolated from fermented sausage was reported to produce an extracellular antimicrobial peptide, termed Pediocin F, that was protein in nature and effec-tive against many bacteria associated with food spoilage and food related health hazards. Pediocin F is reported here to be sensitive to proteolytic enzymes, resistant to heat and organic solvents, and active over a wide range of pH. We have also reported that the extracellular antimicrobial protein pro-duced by P. acidilactici F was really a small peptide. Coomassie-blue stained SDS-PAGE technique allowed us to estimate the molecular weight of this small peptide to …

Desert, Utility, And Minimum Contacts: Toward A Mixed Theory Of Personal Jurisdiction, Kevin C. Mcmunigal Jan 1998

Desert, Utility, And Minimum Contacts: Toward A Mixed Theory Of Personal Jurisdiction, Kevin C. Mcmunigal

Faculty Publications

In this Essay, I suggest several steps to improve the Supreme Court's approach to minimum contacts analysis. Though they necessitate some modification of current doctrine, these steps require neither radical alteration of the test's current factors nor abandonment of any of its purposes. I propose a new way of looking at the Court's minimum contacts analysis that better explains and integrates the factors, temporal perspectives, and purposes that presently figure in the analysis. My approach draws on criminal law, analogizing a state's imposition of the burdens of jurisdiction to its imposition of a criminal sanction. It sees the minimum contacts …

Rape, Resurrection, And The Quest For Truth: The Law And Science Of Rape Trauma Syndrome In Constitutional Balance With The Rights Of The Accused, Kathryn M. Davis Jan 1998

Rape, Resurrection, And The Quest For Truth: The Law And Science Of Rape Trauma Syndrome In Constitutional Balance With The Rights Of The Accused, Kathryn M. Davis

UC Law Journal

Over the last several years, expert testimony concerning rape trauma syndrome has been widely employed by prosecutors to refute a defense of consent asserted by the accused in rape trials. Recognizing the probative value of syndrome evidence, some courts have concluded that when the state relies on rape trauma syndrome to resolve issues of consent, principles of fundamental fairness require that the accused be permitted to defend with the same evidence. However, when the accused is permitted to use rape trauma syndrome offensively, the social science intended to benefit victims of rape may be used to justify the resurrection of …

Hendricks And The Future Of Sex Offender Commitment Laws, Eric S. Janus Jan 1998

Hendricks And The Future Of Sex Offender Commitment Laws, Eric S. Janus

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court's decision in Kansas v. Hendricks suggests that few constitutional limitations will be imposed. This article discusses the four elements imposed by the Court in Hendricks, and then discusses the likely implications of the decision, using civil commitment laws currently on the books and actual post-Hendricks decisions. The article concludes that the imbalance between commitments and discharges will cause commitment populations to grow over the foreseeable future. Eventually the huge costs of commitment schemes will force serious assessment of whether the facial logic of these programs hides seriously distorted resource allocation and anti-therapeutic side-effects.

Hitler's "Whiff Of Champagne": Curt Goetz And Celebrity In The Third Reich, William Grange Jan 1998

Hitler's "Whiff Of Champagne": Curt Goetz And Celebrity In The Third Reich, William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist German Workers' Party were obsessed with keeping the German theatre tradition vital and maintaining Berlin as a "cultural metropolis" after Hitler's appointment as Reich Chancellor on 30 January 1933. Upholding a dynamic and energetic cultural life for the nation was a task for which National Socialism, as a political movement embodying the "will of the people," felt itself eminently well qualified. The Nazis, therefore, began almost as soon as they took over the reins of government in Germany to support theatre as an art form and theatres as institutions to an extent unprecedented in …

Mycobacterium Bovis In Coyotes From Michigan, Colleen S. Bruning-Fann, Stephen M. Schmitt, Scott D. Fitzgerald, Janet B. Payeur, Diana L. Whipple, Thomas M. Cooley, Thomas Carlson, Paul Friedrich

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

During a survey for tuberculosis in wild carnivores and omnivores, Mycobacteriurn bovis was cultured from pooled lymph nodes of three adult female coyotes (Canis latrans) harvested by hunters in Michigan (USA). No gross or histologic lesions suggestive of tuberculosis were seen in these animals. One coyote was taken from Montmorency county and two coyotes from Alcona county located in the northeastern portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula where free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have been found infected with bovine tuberculosis. It is thought that these coyotes became infected with M. bovis through the consumption of tuberculous deer. …

Declines In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Populations In Southern Lake Michigan, 1980–1993, Thomas F. Nalepa, David J. Hartson, David L. Fanslow, Gregory A. Lang, Stephen J. Lozano Jan 1998

Declines In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Populations In Southern Lake Michigan, 1980–1993, Thomas F. Nalepa, David J. Hartson, David L. Fanslow, Gregory A. Lang, Stephen J. Lozano

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Densities of the major benthic macroinvertebrate groups declined dramatically at sites shallower than 50 m in southern Lake Michigan between 1980 and 1993. Declines in Diporeia, Oligochaeta, and Sphaeriidae ranged from 40 to 75% at these depths. Total densities declined from 16 800·m–2 in 1980–1981 to 4,800·m–2 in 1992–1993 at sites in the 16–30 m depth interval and from 21,300 to 11,300·m–2 at sites in the 31–50 m depth interval. Changes at sites deeper than 50 m were minimal; only sphaeriids declined to any extent. Declines in oligochaetes and sphaeriids occurred uniformly throughout the nearshore region …
