Emergence Of Western Diseases In The Tropical World: The Experience With Chronic Cardiovascular Diseases, Terrence Forrester, Richard S. Cooper, David Weatherall Jan 1998

Emergence Of Western Diseases In The Tropical World: The Experience With Chronic Cardiovascular Diseases, Terrence Forrester, Richard S. Cooper, David Weatherall

Faculty Publications

Our knowledge of the disease burden components of tropical populations is fragmentary. Historically, the infectious diseases have been emphasized but, as some populations have undergone socio-economic changes, vital statistics have described a change in the pattern of disease. The picture is of a decline in infectious and a rise in chronic non-communicable disease. We focus here on the emergence of chronic cardiovascular diseases, and use hypertension as the paradigmic example. Early blood pressure surveys showed a virtual absence of hypertension among rural Africans and moderate prevalences in the Caribbean. Prevalence was highest among US and UK blacks. In a recent …

The Relationship Between Rural Low-Income Women's Knowledge And Short-Term Duration Of Breastfeeding, Jefferey J.A. Enstad Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Rural Low-Income Women's Knowledge And Short-Term Duration Of Breastfeeding, Jefferey J.A. Enstad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although patterns of breastfeeding initiation and duration among American women have made dramatic changes over the past 100 years, these patterns have not been studied in rural, low-income women. Furthermore, even less is known about the characteristics of rural low-income women who practice short-term breastfeeding. Therefore, the problem under investigation was to explore the relationship between rural low-income women's knowledge and short-term duration of breastfeeding. The objectives of the study were to: 1) describe what are the characteristics of rural low-income women who breastfeed for four or more weeks postpartum, 2) describe what sources did they receive breastfeeding instruction and …

Differences In Body Image And Depression Scores In Postmenopausal Women Who Do And Do Not Take Hormone Replacement Therapy, Doreen M. Boomsma Jan 1998

Differences In Body Image And Depression Scores In Postmenopausal Women Who Do And Do Not Take Hormone Replacement Therapy, Doreen M. Boomsma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine differences in depressive symptomology and perceived body image in postmenopausal women who currently used HRT with women who never used HRT and women who had previously used HRT but were currently not. Few medical treatments presently available for postmenopausal and menopausal women have such substantial benefits, and risks, as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The study is based on findings that document the use of HRT in preventing chronic illnesses that afflict elderly women. Chronic illness and disability has been shown to increase the incidence of depression in the general population. Chronic …

Effects Of Temperature, Water Hardness, And Recirculation On Copper Corrosion, Brian R. Weiss Jan 1998

Effects Of Temperature, Water Hardness, And Recirculation On Copper Corrosion, Brian R. Weiss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In previous work, the effects of water quality have been shown to influence the formation of scale from copper corrosion. A general understanding of the effects of water quality on copper corrosion have been difficult to obtain because of complex interactions of water quality variables on copper corrosion in different water supply systems. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of temperature and water hardness on copper corrosion occurring in a household water supply system. The effects of recirculation were also studied in concurrence with the above water quality parameters. Electrochemical corrosion testing and corrosion by -product …

American Family Law: History -- Whostory, Ana M. Novoa Jan 1998

American Family Law: History -- Whostory, Ana M. Novoa

Faculty Articles

Family law should be rooted in preserving and protecting intimate relationships; instead, it is rooted in preserving those domestic systems that created or expanded the economic empire of the "Founding Fathers," the white males of the colonial northeast. This northeastern colonial perspective continues to underpin most of the basic assumptions in family law. Concurrently, with the increased privatization of the cooperative virtues, Americans have developed an excessive preoccupation with self and a cult of consumerism.

Consumerism has driven American society toward increased individualism and narcissism. A by-product of the increased individual-consumer culture is the mistaken belief that our personal values …

Resurrection Of The Prohibition On The Corporate Practice Of Medicine: Teaching Old Dogma New Tricks, Andre Hampton Jan 1998

Resurrection Of The Prohibition On The Corporate Practice Of Medicine: Teaching Old Dogma New Tricks, Andre Hampton

Faculty Articles

The corporate practice of medicine doctrine was a creature of the organized medical profession, state legislatures, and the courts in an effort to both protect the physician-patient relationship and help physicians operate as fiduciaries. It aimed at improving the reputation of the medical profession by prohibiting entanglements between a physician’s professional judgment and the profit-making endeavors of lay organizations. The doctrine found its genesis in ethical codes promulgated by the American Medical Association (AMA), which essentially prevented physicians from taking salaried positions, or splitting professional fees, with lay organizations. The rationale was that such a doctrine was necessary in order …

Law’S Alienation: Furies And Nomoi And Bears (And Nuns), Emily A. Hartigan Jan 1998

Law’S Alienation: Furies And Nomoi And Bears (And Nuns), Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

The inclusion of spirit in the law is necessary because the exclusion of the spirit from the law separates the law from its dynamic source of animation. The inclusion of the spirit or spirituality with the law will better allow the United States to craft laws and policies designed to address undocumented workers and illegal aliens.

Even Socrates wrote about the separation of spirit and the law when he wrote about the Nomoi and the Furies; however, he also discussed his Daemon, an inner voice enters into dialogue with the Nomoi, the law. This inner voice that was essential for …

The Return Of Lake Agassiz: The University Of North Dakota And The Flood Of 1997, Jan M. Orvik, Richard P. Larson

UND Publications

On April 19, 1997, Grand Forks and East Grand Forks were overtaken by the largest flood seen in the cities in modern times. Tens of thousands abandoned their homes. Scattered throughout the region, they could do little more than wait for news reports and worry about what they would find when the waters subsided. At the University of North Dakota, the academic year had come to an abrupt end. Students, faculty and staff were among the evacuated. A small group of UND personnel now had to decide how to protect, as much as possible, an institution worth hundreds of millions …
