Building The Imagined Community: Dominican Exempla And Theological Knowledge, Andrea L. Winkler Jan 1998

Building The Imagined Community: Dominican Exempla And Theological Knowledge, Andrea L. Winkler

Quidditas

During the thirteenth century, preachers considered sermons to be among the most important methods of communicating written material to the unlettered. Within a sermon, the use of exempla—short stories used to illustrate a moral point—was a primary means of disseminating theological information, and throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the number of exempla compilations intended as preaching aids increased markedly. Exempla collectors such as Caesarius of Heisterbach and Stephen of Bourbon shared and re-used stories to disseminate theological knowledge. Despite the communal nature of exempla, individual stories were more than unidirectional theological transmissions or stock tales repeated with …

John Skelton's "Agenst Garnesche": Poetic Territorialism, At The Court Of Henry Viii, Victor I. Scherb Jan 1998

John Skelton's "Agenst Garnesche": Poetic Territorialism, At The Court Of Henry Viii, Victor I. Scherb

Quidditas

John Skelton's 1514 flyting "Agenst Garnesche" has been subject to little critical scrutiny. This neglect can perhaps be attributed to the fact that Christopher Garnesche's contribution is missing, but it is also characteristic of the relative neglect accorded to the flyting as a genre, a neglect that has also colored the interpretation of many of Skelton's more abusive poems. One critic, for example, has dismissed the poem as being "nothing but personal abuse of a particularly virulent type . . . adorned with a singular collection of epithets and incomprehensible allusions, which serve only to befog and irritate the reader." …

Characterization Of The Large (L) Rna Of Peanut Bud Necrosis Tospovirus, S. Gowda, Satyanarayana Tatineni, R. A. Naidu, A. Mushegian, W. O. Dawson, D. V. R. Reddy Jan 1998

Characterization Of The Large (L) Rna Of Peanut Bud Necrosis Tospovirus, S. Gowda, Satyanarayana Tatineni, R. A. Naidu, A. Mushegian, W. O. Dawson, D. V. R. Reddy

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The nucleocapsids purified from peanut plants systemically infected with peanut bud necrosis virus (PBNV), a member of the genus Tospovirus, contained both viral(v) and viral complementary(vc) sense L RNAs. Defective forms of L RNA containing ‘core polymerase region’ were observed. The full length L RNA of PBNV was sequenced using overlapping cDNA clones. The 8911 nucleotide L RNA contains a single open reading frame (ORF) in the vc strand, and encodes a protein of 330 kDa. At the 50 and 30 termini of the v sense RNA there were 247 and 32 nt untranslated regions, respectively, containing an 18 …

Hooting: Public And Popular Discourse About Sex Discrimination, Kenneth Schneyer Jan 1998

Hooting: Public And Popular Discourse About Sex Discrimination, Kenneth Schneyer

Humanities Department Faculty Publications & Research

In recent years there have been a surprising number of legal attacks on the restaurant chain called Hooters. These attacks have all been based, one way or another, on a claim of sex discrimination in employment. Yet the attacks vary considerably: some are based on claims of sexual harassment, some on claims by private individuals that they have been discriminated against in hiring because they are male, still others on general claims that the chain is engaged in systemic sex discrimination. Many of these claims are concerned with the troubling boundaries of the bona fide occupational qualification, that uncomfortable defense …

It has been 25 years since the federal policy of Indian self-determination was first conceptualized in the form that was ultimately enacted into Public Law 93-638, the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, in 1975. Through both self-determination contracting and self-governance compacting, tribes have options to transfer tribal shares of Area Offices and Headquarters Offices of the Indian Health Service (IHS) to local tribally-operated health programs. This project provides an assessment of the impacts of tribal control of health care delivery systems. This study explores the impacts of tribal control of health care delivery systems from a tribal perspective and gathers …

Summary Adjudication In United States Civil Procedure, Mary J. Davis Jan 1998

Summary Adjudication In United States Civil Procedure, Mary J. Davis

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article uses one of the high profile mass tort cases of recent decades, the complex silicone gel-filled breast implant products liability litigation, to evaluate summary adjudication measures. Recognizing that not all claims filed are complex tort claims (just the most interesting ones), where commercial claims present the opportunity for use of summary proceedings, those will be discussed as well, particularly regarding mechanisms by which security for a creditor-plaintiffs claim can be obtained prior to a favorable verdict.

While preparing this Report, it became clear that the author has a particular view of what constitutes a "summary adjudication" procedure, but …

Three Generations Of Welfare Mothers Are Enough: A Disturbing Return To Eugenics In The Recent "Workfare" Law, Nicole Huberfeld Jan 1998

Three Generations Of Welfare Mothers Are Enough: A Disturbing Return To Eugenics In The Recent "Workfare" Law, Nicole Huberfeld

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In this Article, Nicole Huberfeld examines recent changes in the welfare system, and considers whether these changes are consistent with the stated goals of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. Turning to the history of “workfare,” Huberfeld reveals parallels between the reasoning of its proponents, and that of eugenicists. She argues that workfare mirrors eugenics theory because its proponents are imposing particular white, middleclass values upon the poor as a condition to providing them benefits: Through her comparison of workfare and eugenics, Huberfeld cautions against legislation that seeks to regulate the private conduct and personal decisions …

Dealing With Death And The Grieving Process, David M. Gabel Jan 1998

Dealing With Death And The Grieving Process, David M. Gabel

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

There are two things that our society doesn't really openly discuss. Oddly enough, they are things that will affect everyone on this planet regardless of race, religion, gender, class, or nationality. I am speaking of the beginning of life, and the end of life. The subject of how life begins is for some reason "taboo" in our society. Children are told absurd things like children are brought to their parents by birds, such as a stork. Another popular tale is that children are "grown" in gardens and are discovered under leaves. The subject of sex seems to be one that …
