Iowa's Changing Forest Resources, Steven E. Jungst, Donald R. Farrar, Michael Brandrup Jan 1998

Iowa's Changing Forest Resources, Steven E. Jungst, Donald R. Farrar, Michael Brandrup

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

After a period of decline in area extending from the 1850s to 1974, Iowa's forest area increased between 1974 and 1990. Although the area increase is encouraging, it may be fleeting. In addition, changes in forest stand structure and forest ownership patterns along with other pressures may make it difficult to maintain healthy forest ecosystems in the future. Notes from the original land survey in Iowa coupled with information from U.S. Forest Service forest inventories make it possible to look at changes in forest area and forest tree types. Unfortunately, similar long-term data do not exist to make possible a …

The Status Of Iowa's Lepidoptera, Dennis W. Schlicht, Timothy T. Orwig Jan 1998

The Status Of Iowa's Lepidoptera, Dennis W. Schlicht, Timothy T. Orwig

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Including strays, 122 species of butterflies have been confirmed in Iowa. However, since European settlement the populations of taxa of Iowa Lepidoptera have declined. While certain generalist species have experienced declines, species with life cycles that include native habitats, especially prairies and wetlands, have been particularly vulnerable. In a 1994 revision of the Iowa endangered and threatened species list, the Natural Resource Commission (NRC) listed two species of butterflies as endangered, five as threatened, and 25 as special concern, using general legal definitions of those rankings (NRC 1994). But after examining recent records, we have revised that list, using numbers …

Weighing The Listener's Interests: Justice Blackmun's Commercial Speech And Public Forum Opinions, William S. Dodge Jan 1998

Weighing The Listener's Interests: Justice Blackmun's Commercial Speech And Public Forum Opinions, William S. Dodge

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Justice Blackmun's commercial speech and public forum opinions reflect a distinctive balancing approach that takes seriously the listener's interests in receiving information and, sometimes, in not receiving information. The Justice consistently advocated this listener-oriented balancing approach throughout his tenure on the Supreme Court, and, contrary to the conventional wisdom, this approach proved to be substantially more protective of free speech than the more categorical approaches the Court ultimately adopted. Professor Dodge argues that Justice Blackmun's approach is preferable to the Court's current doctrine by examining two types of cases that current doctrine finds hard to handle: restrictions on protesters in …

Crime Or Punishment: The Parental Corporal Punishment Defense - Reasonable And Necessary, Or Excused Abuse, Kandice Johnson Jan 1998

Crime Or Punishment: The Parental Corporal Punishment Defense - Reasonable And Necessary, Or Excused Abuse, Kandice Johnson

Faculty Publications

The parental right to use physical force to discipline and restrain children is a privilege firmly rooted in the American system of jurisprudence. This privilege is often asserted as a defense when parents are charged with a crime of aggression against their child. While the privilege to use disciplinary force is universally recognized as a defense in criminal actions, it is equally acknowledged that child abuse is a pervasive reality of American life. This article postulates that current laws, addressing assertion of the parental privilege defense in criminal actions, fail either to provide adequate guidance to parents or to sufficiently …

Hypocrites And Barking Harlots: The Clinton-Lewinsky Affair And The Attack On Women, Christina E. Wells Jan 1998

Hypocrites And Barking Harlots: The Clinton-Lewinsky Affair And The Attack On Women, Christina E. Wells

Faculty Publications

This essay defends against the wholesale castigation of women who support the President. It reveals that such criticism is wrong and unfair. Specifically, it demonstrates that the critics have unreasonably characterized women's responses to Clinton as hypocritical or extremely naive, rather than as examples of astute political decision-making. The essay further exposes the sexism underlying the critics' arguments, revealing that stereotypes regarding (1) women's role as the keeper of morals and (2) women as non-political or non-rational beings are at the heart of much of the criticism. By reinforcing these stereotypes, the critics pose a greater danger to women than …

Molecular Analysis Of Salmonella Paratyphi A From An Outbreak In New Delhi, India, Kwai Lin Thong, S. Nair, R. Chaudhry, P. Seth, A. Kapil, D. Kumar, H. Kapoor, S.D. Puthucheary, T. Pang Jan 1998

Molecular Analysis Of Salmonella Paratyphi A From An Outbreak In New Delhi, India, Kwai Lin Thong, S. Nair, R. Chaudhry, P. Seth, A. Kapil, D. Kumar, H. Kapoor, S.D. Puthucheary, T. Pang

Pre-2000

In the context of emerging infectious diseases, enteric fever caused by Salmonella paratyphi A deserves increased attention and vigilance, although its severity is often milder than that of S. typhi disease. Outbreaks associated with this organism are exceedingly rare but have recently been reported in India (1) and Thailand. In India, the first reported outbreak of disease associated with S. paratyphi A (1) provided an opportunity to study the molecular epidemiology of infection caused by this organism.

Molecular Epidemiology Of Malaysian Dengue 2 Viruses Isolated Over Twenty-Five Years (1968-1993), M.Y. Fong, C.L. Koh, S.K. Lam Jan 1998

Molecular Epidemiology Of Malaysian Dengue 2 Viruses Isolated Over Twenty-Five Years (1968-1993), M.Y. Fong, C.L. Koh, S.K. Lam

Pre-2000

The limited sequencing approach was used to study the molecular epidemiology of 24 Malaysian dengue 2 viruses which were isolated between 1968 and 1993. The sequences of a 240-nucleotide-long region across the envelope/non-structural 1 protein (E/NS1) gene junction of the isolates were determined and analysed. Alignment and comparison of the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of the isolates revealed that nucleotide changes occurred mostly at the third position of a particular codon and were of the transition (A<->G, C<->U) type. Five nucleotide changes resulted in amino acid substitutions. Pairwise comparisons of the nucleotide sequences gave divergence values …

Outbreak Of Salmonella Enteritidis Gastroenteritidis: Investigation By Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis, Kwai Lin Thong, S.D. Puthucheary, T. Pang Jan 1998

Outbreak Of Salmonella Enteritidis Gastroenteritidis: Investigation By Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis, Kwai Lin Thong, S.D. Puthucheary, T. Pang

Pre-2000

Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to investigate an outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella enteritidis. The outbreak occurred among university undergraduates who consumed contaminated food. Molecular typing was done by analyzing DNA band patterns of isolates of S. enteritidis after digestion of chromosomal DNA with infrequently-cutting restriction endonucleases Xbal,Avrll, and Spel and separation of DNA fragments using PFGE. Twentv-nine outbreak isolates of S. enteritidis had identical or highly similar PFGE patterns, whereas different PFGE patterns were observed among three epidemiologically-unrelated isolates obtained durinq the same period. The data obtained confirm the value of PFGE in epidemiologic investigations of outbreaks …

Rethinking Educational Design In New' School Construction, Daniel Duke, William Bradley, Dan Butin, Margaret Grogan, Monica Gillespie Jan 1998

Rethinking Educational Design In New' School Construction, Daniel Duke, William Bradley, Dan Butin, Margaret Grogan, Monica Gillespie

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"The primary impetus to new school construction, of course, typically involves relieving overcrowding or replacing outdated or dangerous facilities. Bradley (1996), however, in a study about the role of architecture in education, notes that the physical structure of a school has the potential to be a vehicle for change. In other words, the design. of school facilities can inspire alterations in the nature, quality, and future direction of what goes on inside. The present study sought to determine the extent to which five school systems in Virginia took advantage of building a new secondary school to address the need for …

Effect Of Wet Corn Gluten Feed, Supplemental Protein, And Tallow On Steer Finishing Performance, C. J. Richards, Rick Stock, Terry J. Klopfenstein, D. H. Shain Jan 1998

Effect Of Wet Corn Gluten Feed, Supplemental Protein, And Tallow On Steer Finishing Performance, C. J. Richards, Rick Stock, Terry J. Klopfenstein, D. H. Shain

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two trials evaluated the effects of level of wet corn gluten feed (WCGF), type of supplemental protein, and supplemental tallow on steer finishing performance. In Trial 1, WCGF was fed at 0, 25 (two diets), or 50% of the dietary DM replacing dry-rolled corn (DRC), molasses, and a portion of the supplement. The DRC control diet and one 25% WCGF diet were supplemented with a combination of protein sources. The second 25% WCGF diet was supplemented with urea alone. The 50% WCGF diet contained no additional protein supplementation. No differences in DMI (P > .10) were observed. Calves fed 25% WCGF …

Effect Of Degradable Intake Protein Level On Finishing Cattle Performance And Ruminal Metabolism, D. H. Shain, Rick Stock, Terry J. Klopfenstein, D. W. Herold Jan 1998

Effect Of Degradable Intake Protein Level On Finishing Cattle Performance And Ruminal Metabolism, D. H. Shain, Rick Stock, Terry J. Klopfenstein, D. W. Herold

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two finishing trials and a metabolism trial were conducted to evaluate level of supplemental degradable intake (crude) protein (DIP) in finishing diets on cattle performance, carcass characteristics, and ruminal metabolism. Finishing trials were conducted in two consecutive years using 128 crossbred yearling steers (BW = 343 ± 5 kg, Trial 1) and 176 crossbred yearling steers (BW = 375 ± 4 kg, Trial 2) in a randomized complete block design. Steers were fed dry-rolled corn diets containing urea at 0, .88, 1.34, or 1.96% (DM basis). No differences in DMI, daily gain, or feed efficiency were noted among steers receiving …

Expression Of An Inter-Α-Trypsininhibitor Heavy Chain-Like Protein In The Pig Endometrium During The Oestrous Cycle And Early Pregnancy, R. D. Geisert, J. V. Yelich, T. Pratt, Daniel Pomp Jan 1998

Expression Of An Inter-Α-Trypsininhibitor Heavy Chain-Like Protein In The Pig Endometrium During The Oestrous Cycle And Early Pregnancy, R. D. Geisert, J. V. Yelich, T. Pratt, Daniel Pomp

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

In pigs, changes in an unidentified endometrial glycoprotein, pGP30, are temporally associated with rapid trophoblast elongation and initial placental attachment on day 12 of gestation. Identification of endometrial pGP30 was undertaken through protein purification, NH2-terminal amino acid sequencing and cDNA sequencing of products generated through reverse transcription-polymerasechain reaction. Sequencing of 35 amino acids from the NH2-terminal end of pGP30 revealed that the 30 kDa glycoprotein is a cleavage product from the C-terminal region of inter-α-trypsininhibitor heavy chain 4 (IαIH4), previously known as inter-α-trypsininhibitor heavy chain-like protein. IαIH4 is unique compared with the three other inter-α-trypsininhibitor heavy chains as it does …

Hüseyin Eray Bulut,Erdoğan Gürsoy, An Ultrastructural Study Jan 1998

Hüseyin Eray Bulut,Erdoğan Gürsoy, An Ultrastructural Study

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cryptorchidism causes a failure in testosterone secretion from the testicles. The metabolism of the adrenocortical steroids is influenced by sex hormones. Therefore testicular failure may cause structural and func-tional alterations in adrenal cortex. It is the aim of the present study to evaluate the effect of experimental caryptorchidism on the ultrastructure of the rat adrenal cortex, especialy on the reticularis region during prepubertal and postpubertal ages. Three groups of animals were used in the present study. The first (prepubertal) group consisted of 5,21-day old rats whereas the second (postpubertal) group was made of 5,3-month old rats. Third group was the …
