The Social Construction Of Feminine Sexualities In Women's Popular Periodicals: 1920-1996, Judith Jackson Pomeroy Jan 1998

The Social Construction Of Feminine Sexualities In Women's Popular Periodicals: 1920-1996, Judith Jackson Pomeroy

Doctoral Dissertations

Some of the most significant changes in women's statuses and roles have occurred over the last eight decades. These changes in women's lives have been precipitated by social, economic, political, and cultural arrangements and technological developments. In varying degrees, some of the most significant of these events have had the effect of transforming women's lives in this century. Since these events have also led to shifts in perceptions of feminine status, roles, and sexuality that mirror and reinforce women's changing reality, we might anticipate a parallel transformation in cultural representations of feminine sexuality.

This study relies on two popular women's …

The Field Of Meanings Of Childlessness In Contemporary Film Culture, Susan Marie Ross Jan 1998

The Field Of Meanings Of Childlessness In Contemporary Film Culture, Susan Marie Ross

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine contemporary cultural meanings of female childlessness and come to understand these meanings in relation to historical meanings of childlessness. The contemporary shifts in the meaning of childlessness reflect America's struggle with women's changing social roles, particularly since the mid-1960s. As more women are stepping outside of the domestic sphere and forging new nondomestic pathways, the meaning of childlessness is undergoing changes and reflects our culture's ambiguity about women's new roles.

In order to examine the shifts in themes regarding childlessness, this study focuses on the thematic analysis of 67 films released by …

Synthesis Of Vicinal Bisamidines And Bisaminals For The Preparation Of Tetraazamacrocycles And The Synthesis Of Cross-Bridged Cyclam Derivatives And Studies On Their Complexation Of Small Cations, David Philip Reed Jan 1998

Synthesis Of Vicinal Bisamidines And Bisaminals For The Preparation Of Tetraazamacrocycles And The Synthesis Of Cross-Bridged Cyclam Derivatives And Studies On Their Complexation Of Small Cations, David Philip Reed

Doctoral Dissertations

A new methodology for the preparation of tetraazamacrocycles is presented. This new methodology utilizes a regioselective reduction of vicinal bisaminals (33) and bisamidines (16) precursors to afford ring expanded tetraamines. This chemistry has provided a synthetic route for the preparation of benzocyclam (34), a compound whose preparation is unreported in the literature.*.

This methodology has aided in the preparation of cross-bridged cyclam derivatives (83, 92, 95). Cross-bridged cyclam derivatives are bicyclic tetraamines which adopt low energy conformations appropriate for the complexation of small cations. Cross-bridged cyclam derivatives have potential utility in clinical and nuclear medicine as well as bioinorganic chemistry. …

Single Gender Marriage: A Religious Perspective, Raymond C. O'Brien Jan 1998

Single Gender Marriage: A Religious Perspective, Raymond C. O'Brien

Scholarly Articles

This Article will offer a religious perspective which is a response to the legal arguments in favor of single-gender marriage. Three arguments will be made: first, that the religious perspective identified and associated with the Roman Catholic tradition offers a fundamental basis for family life that has been proven to be beneficial to society as a whole, and to the message of revelation consigned to Christians by Jesus Christ; second, inasmuch as the religious perspective is being contradicted by judicial interpretation rather than through legislative process, a tyranny of judicial activism has and is subverting a public policy consensus; and …

Pinning The Blame & Piercing The Veil In The Mists Of Metaphor: The Supreme Court’S New Standards For The Cercla Liability Of Parent Companies & A Proposal For Legislative Reform, Lucia A. Silecchia Jan 1998

Pinning The Blame & Piercing The Veil In The Mists Of Metaphor: The Supreme Court’S New Standards For The Cercla Liability Of Parent Companies & A Proposal For Legislative Reform, Lucia A. Silecchia

Scholarly Articles

This article tackles the complex question of the liability of parent corporation for the CERCLA misadventures of their subsidiaries. In 1998, the United States Supreme Court tried to resolve this complex question. In many respects, this decision was a significant step in the right direction, and the article begins by analyzing the Court’s opinion. However, the article then identifies three significant questions left open after Best foods. In light of these open questions, the article proposes a legislative proposal to further refine the parent-subsidiary allocation of liability to better serve CERCLA’s broad remedial goals and to clarify the expectations of …

Complexities In Biomedical Decision-Making, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1998

Complexities In Biomedical Decision-Making, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Within the contemporary debate over medical ethics, without question the most striking weakness found is the lack of a basic yardstick against which either the "rightness" or "wrongness" of a physician's actions may be measured. No general agreement is to be found among physicians or ethicists acknowledging what ethical determinant the physician should or should not follow in a particular case. Yet, despite this conflict of uncertainties, a framework for principled decisionmaking does exist and can be found within the rubric of medical ethics.

Foreword: The ‘Right To Marry’ In The Decisions Of The United States Supreme Court, Robert A. Destro

Scholarly Articles

Given the importance of Loving in American constitutional law, we were somewhat surprised to learn that no commemorative conferences or symposia had been planned to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the decision. We designed our conference, "Law and the Politics of Marriage: Loving v. Virginia After 30 Years," to fill that gap.

The conference was held at The Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law, 19-21 November 1997, and was co-sponsored by three institutions, each having a unique and abiding interest in the subject matter: The Catholic University of America, the Howard University School of Law, and the J. …

Physical Therapy Evaluation Techniques For Determination Of Psychological Factors Affecting Low Back Pain, John Brandt Jan 1998

Physical Therapy Evaluation Techniques For Determination Of Psychological Factors Affecting Low Back Pain, John Brandt

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Low back pain continues to represent the leading musculoskeletal cause of disability in the United States and is the most frequently reported condition for which people receive outpatient physical therapy. In several of these instances, evaluation reveals no known pathological cause for a patient's symptoms. Studies have shown that psychological factors can play a role in the presentation of low back pain. In order to effect treatment, assessment tools are needed that can be utilized by physical therapists to identify the presence of these psychological factors. The purpose of this literature review is to outline methods of assessment that the …

A Comparison Study Of Strength Training Outcomes Between Progressive Resistive Training And Regressive Resistive Training, Carrie Brossart

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in strength training outcomes between the progressive resistive program and the regressive resistive program. The subjects consisted of 14 students at the University of North Dakota. They were randomly assigned to either the progressive or regressive group and performed their respective training two times per week for five weeks. Each subject was tested prior to beginning the program and after finishing the program. These pretest and posttest values were compared to determine strength gains. A paired samples t-test was used to determine that each group had significant …

An Overview Of Dupuytren's Disease, Michel Burgess Jan 1998

An Overview Of Dupuytren's Disease, Michel Burgess

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Dupuytren's disease is defined as a pathologic change in the palmar and digital fascia which often results in a secondary, painless, fibrous, flexion contracture of the digital joints. Normally, the disease process is painless, but a severe contracture of 30° or more at the metacarpophalangeal joint and 15° or more at the proximal interphalangeal joint can interfere with the biomechanics of the hand, preventing the performance of activities of daily living. Though the use of modalities is ineffective as a conservative approach to treat the disease, a therapist can positively affect postoperative rehabilitation outcomes using manual techniques, physical modalities, and …

An Overview Of Compensatory Pronation At The Subtalar Joint And Orthotic Correction, Jacy Greff

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Excessive compensatory pronation at the subtalar joint is a common foot disorder that affects a large population of people. It is a disorder that stems from a wide variety of causes including both congenital and acquired as well as intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Excessive compensatory pronation is also the cause of many other disorders which may affect not only the foot but other joints including the knee, hip, and back. The scope of this study will focus on acquired pronation and its causes as well as the proper orthotic choice and prescription to best treat the problem.

Theoretical And Practical Considerations For Enhancing Power To Improve Athletic Performance, Douglas A. Herron Jan 1998

Theoretical And Practical Considerations For Enhancing Power To Improve Athletic Performance, Douglas A. Herron

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Power is of extreme interest to coaches and athletes alike because of the crucial role it plays in athletic performance. This independent study examines the essence of power and attempts to describe its components in detail as they relate to various sporting events and explores theoretical and practical considerations for anaerobic power augmentation using mathematical arguments as a basis for the suggested changes to traditional training protocol.

Specifically, this study suggests changes to traditional resistance training protocol during the power phase of a mesocycie by decreasing the percentage of the maximal lift from 90% through 95% to 60% through 85%. …
