Teaching For Educated Children, Jane Ericson Jan 1998

Teaching For Educated Children, Jane Ericson

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Considering the question, "What are the qualities of an educated child?" has been both a personal and professional journey for me. That question was what I sought to answer nearly a year ago and have been thinking about ever since. Through this paper I intend, not just to share any conclusions I have reached, but also describe the thinking process I went through to get there. Actually, the process may have been more significant than the end. I believe that it has been a worthwhile topic to investigate, helping me to grow as I complete my own formal education and …

Lost In The Judicial Wilderness: The Stateless Corporation After Matimak Trading, Mark Baker Jan 1998

Lost In The Judicial Wilderness: The Stateless Corporation After Matimak Trading, Mark Baker

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Statelessness clearly implicates issues concerning basic human rights. The United Nations has addressed some of these issues by taking steps to reduce statelessness and to minimize its results, most notably with the Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness and the Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons. Although mitigating the effects of statelessness is noble and quite worthwhile, these efforts may fail to reach certain stateless persons, and, more specifically, certain stateless entities. Enter Matimak Trading Company ("Matimak"), a corporation formed under the laws of, and with its principal place of business in, Hong Kong. Recently, the U.S. Second …

Experiencing Physical Violence During Pregnancy: Prevalence And Correlates, Vilma E. Cokkinides, Ann L. Coker Jan 1998

Experiencing Physical Violence During Pregnancy: Prevalence And Correlates, Vilma E. Cokkinides, Ann L. Coker

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Violence during pregnancy directly impacts the mental and physical health of pregnant women. We assessed the prevalence and correlates of physical violence around the time of pregnancy in a representative sample of 6,718 women in South Carolina. Physical violence, defined as "being physically hurt by husband or partner" or "being involved in a physical fight" was reported by 10.9% of recently pregnant women. These were correlates of violence: experiencing increased numbers of stressful life events, being unmarried, having increased parity, being on Medicaid, and having an unwanted pregnancy. Screening to identify violence in pregnancy in health care settings is vital …

Violence Against Women In Sierra Leone: Frequency And Correlates Of Intimate Partner Violence And Forced Sexual Intercourse, Ann L. Coker, Donna L. Richter

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Violence against women is a significant public health problem which impacts women, men, and children. Little is known about the frequency or correlates of violence against women in Africa. In this cross-sectional study, we found that 66.7% of 144 women surveyed in a study of AIDS knowledge, attitude, and behaviours, report being beaten by an intimate male partner and 50.7% report having ever been forced to have sexual intercourse; 76.6% of women report either forced sex or intimate partner violence. Circumcised women were most likely to report intimate partner violence and forced sexual intercourse. To improve the health of women …

Immunopathogenesis Of A Spectrum Of Inflammatory Lung Diseases Induced By Experimental Reovirus Infection, Stephen Clifford Bellum Jan 1998

Immunopathogenesis Of A Spectrum Of Inflammatory Lung Diseases Induced By Experimental Reovirus Infection, Stephen Clifford Bellum

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Inflammatory lung diseases cause a significant amount of morbidity and mortality. However, the mechanisms that control the initiation and resolution of pulmonary inflammatory responses have not been well-elucidated. Histopathological data suggests that the lung responds with a similar pattern of inflammation to diverse range of injurious stimuli. In order to investigate the immunopathogenesis of lung inflammation, a series of in vivo models of lung inflammation were generated in CBA/J and CD-I mice by respiratory reovirus 1/L infection. Using this approach, it was observed in CBA/J mice that a relatively low titer of reovirus 1/L induced a pattern of intraluminal fibrosis …

Involvement Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1 Splice Sites In The Cytoplasmic Accumulation Of Viral Rna, Keith Thomas Borg Jan 1998

Involvement Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1 Splice Sites In The Cytoplasmic Accumulation Of Viral Rna, Keith Thomas Borg

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 is a complex retrovirus, which produces a large number of proteins from a 10 Kb genome. The virus utilizes three overlapping open reading frames, a ribosomal frameshift event and three different classes of RNA (unspliced, partially spliced and fully spliced RNA) to perform this feat. To regulate the expression of these RNAs, HIV-1 requires Rev, a viral trans regulatory protein. The fully spliced RNAs are not dependent upon Rev for their expression. The unspliced and partially spliced RNAs are dependent on Rev to produce proteins. Rev binds to the Rev Response Element (RRE) located …

Observations On Acidosis Through Continual Feed Intake And Ruminal Ph Monitoring, Rob Cooper, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock, Cal Parrott Jan 1998

Observations On Acidosis Through Continual Feed Intake And Ruminal Ph Monitoring, Rob Cooper, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock, Cal Parrott

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A system of continual data acquisition of feed intake and ruminal pH has been developed for studying subacute acidosis in finishing steers. Feed intake is monitored with feedbunks which are suspended from weigh cells. Ruminal pH is monitored with submersible pH electrodes suspended in the rumen. Numerous anecdotal observations of subacute acidosis have been made throughout the feeding periods of several steers, providing information unlikely to be recognized during a planned trial. Therefore, this model for studying subacute acidosis offers many unique opportunities for enhancing our understanding of the interactions between feed intake and acidosis.

Effects Of Feed Intake Variation On Acidosis And Performance Of Finishing Steers, Rob Cooper, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock, Cal Parrott, Dan Herold Jan 1998

Effects Of Feed Intake Variation On Acidosis And Performance Of Finishing Steers, Rob Cooper, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock, Cal Parrott, Dan Herold

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Four metabolism and two finishing trials were conducted to determine the effects of imposed feed intake variation on acidosis and performance of finishing steers. In metabolism trials, intake variation of 3 lb DM/day increased acidosis of limit-fed steers as measured by ruminal pH. However, when steers were fed at ad libitum levels of intake, intake variation of up to 4 lb DM/day did not increase acidosis. In finishing trials, imposed intake variation of 4 lb DM/day neither decreased daily gain nor feed efficiency of steers fed at ad libitum levels of intake.

Phosphorus Requirement Of Finishing Yearlings, Galen E. Erickson, Mark Klemesrud, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 1998

Phosphorus Requirement Of Finishing Yearlings, Galen E. Erickson, Mark Klemesrud, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Sixty yearling crossbred steers (849 lb) were fed individually either 0.35 or 0.70 % of DM as Ca and 0.14, 0.19, 0.24, 0.29 or 0.34 % P. Ash content was determined on bones from the lower front legs and one rib from each carcass was used to determine breaking strength. Performance and bone characteristics were not affected by dietary P concentration or P intake. Steers fed the 0.70 % Ca diets had lower gains and poorer efficiencies when compared to those fed 0.35 % Ca. These results indicate the requirement for finishing yearlings is 0.14 % P or less and …

Prolonged Elevated Concentrations Of Estradiol Do Not Affect Conception Rates In Beef Cattle, Karol Fike, Michael Wehrman, Ellen G. M. Bergfeld, Freddie Kojima, James E. Kinder Jan 1998

Prolonged Elevated Concentrations Of Estradiol Do Not Affect Conception Rates In Beef Cattle, Karol Fike, Michael Wehrman, Ellen G. M. Bergfeld, Freddie Kojima, James E. Kinder

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Following treatments causing either prolonged elevated concentrations of estradiol associated with development of persistent follicles or inhibited elevated concentrations of estradiol and development of persistent follicles, conception rates were compared. Beef females received either four norgestomet implants for 9 days (day 0 = treatment initiation; n=59) or one norgestomet implant for 7 days and three additional norgestomet implants for 2 days (n=60). All implants were removed on day 9 followed by estrous detection and AI for 7 days. Treatment and day interacted to affect estradiol concentrations from day 0 to day 9 with elevated estradiol in females treated with one …

Lipid Sources In Finishing Diets For Yearling Steers, Ivan G. Rush, Burt Weichenthal, Brad Van Pelt Jan 1998

Lipid Sources In Finishing Diets For Yearling Steers, Ivan G. Rush, Burt Weichenthal, Brad Van Pelt

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Adding Synergy2 to a corn-based finishing diet to provide 1.12% lipid did not significantly increase steer performance in this trial or in pooled results between this trial and one reported in 1995. However, numerical increases were observed in daily gain and feed dry matter intake for Synergy when compared to control values. Pooled results for additions of pork fat (white grease) to provide 1.12 or 2.24% lipid were intermediate to those for the control and Synergy treatments. Any performance benefit attributed to Synergy may be as much from its effect on dry matter intake as it is from nutrient …

An Enzyme-Microbial Feed Product For Finishing Steers, Burt Weichenthal, Ivan G. Rush, Brad Van Pelt Jan 1998

An Enzyme-Microbial Feed Product For Finishing Steers, Burt Weichenthal, Ivan G. Rush, Brad Van Pelt

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Feeding MSE (multiple stabilized enzymes in an enzyme-microbial feed product) at the rate of 2 lb of product per ton of diet dry matter in two trials with finishing yearling steers, increased daily gain by an average of 6.9% over feeding Rumensin-Tylan at 29 g and 10 g per ton, respectively. Feed-to-gain ratio was improved by an average of 5.6% with MSE in the same comparison. Carcass measurements were similar, except for slight increases in hot carcass weight and dressing percent for cattle fed MSE. Percentages of liver abscesses were low and similar for both treatments.
