Demographic Viability Of Populations Of Silene Regis In Midwestern Prairies: Relationships With Fire Management, Genetic Variation, Geographic Location, Population Size And Isolation, Eric S. Menges, Rebecca W. Dolan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

  1. We studied the demographic viability of populations of a long-lived iteroparous prairie perennial, Silene regia, in relation to management regimes, population sizes, geographical region (Ohio and Indiana vs. Missouri and Arkansas), degree of isolation and amount of genetic variation. Demographic data were collected from 16 populations for up to 7 years.

  2. This species has high survivorship, slow growth, frequent flowering and episodic seedling recruitment. Matrix projection methods were used to summarize population performance with and without recruitment. Median finite rates of increase by population varied from 0.57 to 1.82 and from 0.44 to 0.99, respectively.

  3. Populations with the highest rates …

Battered Women Syndrome As A Tort Cause Of Action, Heather Tonsing Jan 1998

Battered Women Syndrome As A Tort Cause Of Action, Heather Tonsing

Journal of Law and Health

The focus of this Note is the upcoming development of a new tort cause of action which would afford battered women full recovery and also help alleviate a growing public health epidemic. This Note argues that battered women syndrome is a valid psychological theory which has a place in civil litigation as a recognized cause of action. Although the theory is criticized by feminist scholars who believe that the testimony may perpetuate gender bias in criminal trials, the syndrome is still advantageous for women seeking redress in civil courts. Part I examines the phenomenon of battered women syndrome and its …

Toxic Television, Editorial Discretion, & (And) The Public Interest: A Rocky Mountain Low, Clay Calvert Jan 1998

Toxic Television, Editorial Discretion, & (And) The Public Interest: A Rocky Mountain Low, Clay Calvert

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

In the modem world of newsmedia, the lines between informative news and gratuitous entertainment have been blurred by a increase in "infotainment" broadcasting and by news shows which often use violence or other entertainment devices to increase audiences. This trend has given rise to concerns that the current regulatory scheme is not properly categorizing this type of "news" and is not sufficiently warning or protecting viewers. In this article, Professor Calvert examines the questions surrounding this controversy. To illustrate some of these issues, this article looks at a recent challenge brought by a Colorado group to the renewal of the …

Tobacco Is A Filthy Weed And From The Devil Doth Proceed: A Study Of The Government's Efforts To Regulate Smoking On The Silver Screen, Jason Edward Lavender

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Many of the negative effects of tobacco have been addressed by recent litigation and federal regulations. The federal government already regulates tobacco label and advertisement content and prohibits tobacco promotion on television and radio. There are lingering concerns, however, about the effects of depicting tobacco use in movies. This Note examines current tobacco regulations and the justifications asserted for new restrictions on the use of tobacco in movies. This Note further analyzes the First Amendment implications of a ban on tobacco use in movies, and concludes that such use is commercial speech that should be granted heightened Constitutional protection.

The Effects Of Constant Darkness And Constantlight On The Pineal Gland And Thymusmorphology In The Rats, Nihal İçten, Filiz Karagöz, K. Ali Güneç Jan 1998

The Effects Of Constant Darkness And Constantlight On The Pineal Gland And Thymusmorphology In The Rats, Nihal İçten, Filiz Karagöz, K. Ali Güneç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It is known that periods of constant darkness and constant light cause stim-ulation and inhibition of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. It is also suggested that neuroendocrine responses to environmental stimuli, such as light, can influence immune responses through the pineal gland. For these reasons, in this study the effects of the alterations in the photoperiod rhythm on the pineal gland and thymus morphology were experimentally investigated. 30 Swiss albino rats, aged 4 wk, were divided into 3 groups. Group I rats were kept in a dark room, group II in a room under a bright artificial light and …

Democracy And Dispute Resolution: Individual Rights In International Trade Organizations, Andrea K. Schneider

Faculty Publications

The question of dispute resolution systems for international organizations is of growing importance. Not only has there been a plethora of new international and regional organizations created in the last decade, but this trend is likely to continue. There are numerous proposals for multilateral free trade areas and agreements across Latin America and the Caribbean as well as in Asia. At the same time, existing international trade organizations have come under increasing scrutiny for their inability to reflect accurately the needs and concerns of the citizens of the member countries.

This article takes a different approach to understanding questions of …

Uncertainty And Variability Analysis In The Estimation Of Human Exposure To Mercury From Seafood Consumption Using Two-Dimensional Monte Carlo Simulations, J. Keith Bangerter Jan 1998

Uncertainty And Variability Analysis In The Estimation Of Human Exposure To Mercury From Seafood Consumption Using Two-Dimensional Monte Carlo Simulations, J. Keith Bangerter

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Fish and shellfish are a beneficial food source due to their high protein content, low saturated fat content, and low cholesterol content; they possess beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium. Recent studies identified a decreased risk of sudden cardiac death in seafood consumers. Per capita seafood consumption increased 27% from 1975 to 1990, with nearly 95% of the U.S. population consuming some kind of fish or shellfish product each year. But seafood consumption may pose health risks which need to be weighed against benefits. One of potential risks is the toxicity of methylmercury. Mercury …

Clear Cell Sarcoma Of The Kidney And Congenital Mesoblastic Nephroma: Cellular And Molecular Characterization Of Primary Tumors, Tumor Cell Lines, And Nude Mouse Xenografts Delineate Wilms' Tumor-Distinct Histopathogenetic Properties, Noel Anderson Brownlee

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK) and Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) are both pediatric renal tumors that differ from Wilms' tumor based on their distinctive histopathologic characteristics and clinical behavior. CCSK is a very malignant tumor characterized by a propensity for bone metastases, contrasting the relatively benign course characteristic of the majority of Wilms' tumors. CMN, in contrast, is a tumor of the newborn usually diagnosed within the first three months of life that is generally cured with surgery alone. To investigate further the cellular and molecular relationships of CCSK, CMN, and Wilms' tumor, a nude mouse xenograft and …

Use Of Leadership Practices By The Managers And Their Impact On The Job Satisfaction Of Employees In The Hotel Industry, Jasvir Singh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine the differences, if any, between leadership practices used by hotel managers and the perceptions of those leadership practices by employees relative to their job satisfaction. Differences in perception of leadership practices were measured using two identical instruments--one for managers, and the other for their employees. Employees' overall job satisfaction was measured using an additional instrument. Data were collected from 26 managers and 294 employees at five participating non-gaming hotel properties in Las Vegas, Nevada. Five research questions along with two hypotheses were tested. The finding of this study indicated that employees' …

The Illusion Of Autonomy At The End Of Life: Unconsented Life Support And The Wrongful Life Analogy, Philip G. Peters Jr. Jan 1998

The Illusion Of Autonomy At The End Of Life: Unconsented Life Support And The Wrongful Life Analogy, Philip G. Peters Jr.

Faculty Publications

Overwhelming evidence indicates that physicians routinely ignore patient preferences about life-sustaining care. Yet, the ability of wrongfully treated patients to recover compensatory damages has recently been placed in doubt. Both courts and commentators have suggested that actions for unconsented life support are analogous to actions for wrongful life and should, for that reason, be rejected. In this article, Professor Philip Peters argues that the obvious similarity between the two kinds of claims is overshadowed by many factors that distinguish the two settings. As a result, Professor Peters concludes that a physician who wrongfully administers life-sustaining care over the objections of …
