Measuring & Monitering Plant Populations, Caryl L. Elzinga, Daniel W. Salzer, John W. Willoughby
Measuring & Monitering Plant Populations, Caryl L. Elzinga, Daniel W. Salzer, John W. Willoughby
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
This technical reference describes the role of effective monitoring and provides a step-by-step overview of the entire monitoring process for single plant species. The challenges of successful monitoring involve efficient and specific design and a commitment to implementation of the monitoring project, from data collection to reporting and using results. The material in this reference is presented in a logical progression from planning and objective setting, designing the methodology, and taking the measurements in the field to analyzing and presenting the data and making the necessary management responses. However, many of the steps occur simultaneously or provide feedback for the …

Perceiving And Feeling Personal Discrimination: Motivation Or Inhibition For Collective Action?, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson
Perceiving And Feeling Personal Discrimination: Motivation Or Inhibition For Collective Action?, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson
Psychology Faculty Publications
Relative deprivation and group consciousness theories differ in their predictions of how personal discrimination and personal discontent will be related to taking collective action. According to relative deprivation theory, assessments of personal status should be unrelated to taking collective action.
In contrast, group consciousness theories suggest that while perceiving personal discrimination is necessary for collective action to occur, feelings of personal discontent may inhibit it. Female students completed questionnaires assessing their perceptions of, and affective responses to personal discrimination, as well as their participation in collective actions. A hierarchical regression analysis found that personal discrimination and discontent interacted such that …

No. 04: Silenced By Nation-Building: African Immigrants And Language Policy In The New South Africa, Maxine Reitzes, Nigel Crawhall
Southern African Migration Programme
All people in South Africa have constitutionallyguaranteed language rights. To what extent do these rights apply to non-citizens and are they actually observed by various state departments and officials? This report presents the results of a preliminary investigation into this question by focusing on the rights and treatment of foreigners in South Africa, particularly foreigners from other African countries.
The report was commissioned by the Southern African Migration Project (SAMP) as part of a broader programme to understand the reception and treatment of non-South Africans in the new South Africa. Our aim, as authors, is to encourage government departments and …
Religious Rituals And Latcrit Theorizing, Margaret E. Montoya
Religious Rituals And Latcrit Theorizing, Margaret E. Montoya
Faculty Scholarship
After the first annual LatCrit conference held at La Jolla, California, Professor Keith Aoki observed that "issues of religion and spirituality are submerged not far below the surface of emerging Latina/o Critical Theory." He proposed that LatCrits begin to "unbracket" religious affiliation and identity in the construction and representation of individual and group racial identities. Professor Aoki further posited that "[i]n a paradoxical way, religion simultaneously may be both more and less difficult to voluntarily discard than race, language or nationality as a constitutive element of one's individual and group identity.

These remarks will focus on the constitutional issues surrounding the treatment and habilitation of children with mental disabilities. I believe that we need to rethink the premises on which we construct our analysis of these problems, and it will surprise few in this audience that I conclude the Supreme Court of the United States did not get it precisely right.

Differentiating Regulation Of Public And Private Institutions: A Preliminary Inquiry, Jonathan G.S. Koppell
Differentiating Regulation Of Public And Private Institutions: A Preliminary Inquiry, Jonathan G.S. Koppell
Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell
Twenty years ago, James Q. Wilson and Patricia Rachal argued that government cannot regulate itself. In an era of revived federalism, increased reliance on contractors, and proliferation of quasi-public organizations, the importance of government self-regulation is greater than ever. This paper tests an underlying assumption of Wilson and Rachal's claim: that regulation of public and private organizations can be differentiated. Employing a meta-research design, this pilot study uses existing regulatory case studies to create "regulatory relationship profiles" for public and private organizations. These profiles include information on the structure of the regulator, the intent of the regulation, the enforcement tools …

Special Collections (Miscellaneous)
The University of Rhode Island campus has over 140 species and cultivars of deciduous and evergreen trees. URI occupies the site of a barren, rocky pasture that was a part of the Oliver Watson-Tefft farm, purchased in 1888. Today the campus is not only endowed with our lovely native shade trees, but also with many exotic and ornamental landscape plants. This self-guided tour identifies many botanically interesting and historically significant trees on the URI Kingston campus.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate a dual action prodrug concept wherein an unnatural myristic acid analogue is coupled via an ester moiety to the 5’-position of FLT or AZT. Subsequent intracellular cleavage of the prodrug ester would simultaneously release FLT or AZT that could inhibit reverse transcriptase (RT), and the myristic acid analogue that could inhibit myristoyl- CoA:protein N-myristoyltransferase (NMT).
Methods: Cytotoxicity (2.2.15 cell culture), and antihepatitis B activity of 5’-O-myristoyl analogue prodrug derivatives of FLT and AZT (2-8) were evaluated in vitro using human liver hepatitis B virus (HBV) producing 2.2.15 cell …

Generic And Professional Culture Care Meanings And Practices Of Finnish Women In Birth Within Leininger's Theory Of Culture Care Diversity And Universality, Judith Kilmer Lamp
Wayne State University Dissertations
The domain of inquiry was generic and professional cultural care meanings and practices of Finnish women in birth. The purpose was to discover culture care diversities and universalities of generic and professional care of Finnish women in birth. Discovery of the epistemic and ontological dimensions of women's health and well being related to providing culture care was held to contribute to the body of transcultural nursing knowledge. Previous transcultural nursing studies of birthing in different cultures with a care focus was held as essential to understand health care practices and well being. The need exists for further indepth studies of …
Critical Thinking Of Nursing Students, Graduate Nurses And Expert Nurses In Simulated Clinical Situations, Cheryl M. Martin
Critical Thinking Of Nursing Students, Graduate Nurses And Expert Nurses In Simulated Clinical Situations, Cheryl M. Martin
Wayne State University Dissertations
Critical thinking is a thought process used by nurses for clinical decision making. This descriptive correlational study focused on the relationships among critical thinking, decision making and clinical nursing expertise during a clinical simulation. A mid-range theory was developed from the work of Benner (1984) and Paul (1992). As persons develop clinical expertise from novice to expert level, through acquisition of knowledge and experience, critical thinking is developed and used for clinical decision making. A convenience sample of 149 nursing students, graduate nurses, and expert nurses was selected from nursing programs and health care agencies in the Midwest. Critical thinking …

This descriptive study examined the economic gains achieved by community college graduates who participated in an urban based Perkins funded Single Parent and Displaced Homemakers program. Indices included ethnicity, age, program of study, salary and wages, age at graduation, length of time required to complete the program, wage, job, and program assistance satisfaction as well as recommendations for program improvement and income reported by certificate of achievement and associate degree graduates as compared with pre-participation income. The college data base, program application, college graduate survey and a modified college graduate survey were included in the research design that had a …
