Race-Class Interactions In Stereotyping, Claudine Hoffman Truong Jan 1998

Race-Class Interactions In Stereotyping, Claudine Hoffman Truong

Masters Theses

The present study investigated race and class stereotypes about Whites and African-Americans. The study recruited 160 subjects (eighty White and eighty African-American). Each subject read a brief class and race description of a person, and listed ten adjectives rating how positive or negative they intended the adjective to be. They also had to place themselves in a class and rate the importance of criteria used in that class placement. The study revealed that African-American (A.A.) subjects gave highest ratings to a person described as A.A., and White (W.) subjects gave highest ratings to a person described as W. Furthermore, subjects …

Women's Studies At Umass Boston: Celebrates 25 Years 1973-1998, Sherry H. Penney, Jean Mcmahon Humez, Women's Studies Program, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Women’s and Gender Studies Faculty Publication Series

What follows is an impressionistic overview of our program's first twenty five years, derived in part from our archives and in part from our collective recollections, and written by the current program director. As with any celebratory institutional history, it makes no claim to objectivity. Our aim is to look back at the main lines of our growth and development, and in so doing to acknowledge many of the individuals who have contributed to the building of the program over time.

We gratefully acknowledge the work of our first archivist, UMass Women's Studies / Sociology graduate dian fitzpatrick who, in …

Spirituality Of Caregiver Wives Of Dementia Patients, Martha Preston-Devries

Masters Theses

The spiritual perspectives o f 30 caregiver wives of dementia patients and 30 non-caregiver wives were compared using a convenience sample in the Midwest. Spiritual perspective includes behaviors such as praying privately, mentioning spiritual matters to others, and seeking spiritual guidance as well as beliefs such as forgiveness, the belief that spiritual views influence their life, and feeling close to God or a higher power during prayer or worship. The Spiritual Perspective Scale was used to measure spiritual perspective in participants. Scores on the Spiritual Perspective Scale were analyzed for the two groups using the t test for individual variables. …

Living Arrangements Of The Elderly In The United States: Comparing Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, And Asians' Households., Kiyomi Ando Jan 1998

Living Arrangements Of The Elderly In The United States: Comparing Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, And Asians' Households., Kiyomi Ando

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

My dissertation analyzed the living arrangements of the elderly, focusing on differences across gender and racial/ethnic lines. Drawing upon rational choice and family solidarity theoretical perspectives. I derived hypotheses dealing with the effects of individual resources, cultural characteristics, and geographic context on the elderly's living arrangements. These hypotheses were empirically tested using logistic regression models to estimate the odds of the elderly choosing from among three options of living arrangements--independent living, joint living, and dependent living. Separate models were applied to non-Hispanic white, African American, Hispanic, and Asian subsamples. Data were from the 1990 Census Public Use Sample (PUMS-L). The …

Identification Of Speeded And Slowed Familiar Melodies By Younger, Middle-Aged, And Older Musicians And Nonmusicians, Melinda W. Andrews, W. Jay Dowling, James C. Bartlett, Andrea R. Halpern Jan 1998

Identification Of Speeded And Slowed Familiar Melodies By Younger, Middle-Aged, And Older Musicians And Nonmusicians, Melinda W. Andrews, W. Jay Dowling, James C. Bartlett, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

There is a range of tempos within which listeners can identify familiar tunes (around 0.8 to 6.0 notes/s). Faster and slower tunes are difficult to identify. The authors assessed fast and slow melody-identification thresholds for 80 listeners ages 17–79 years with expertise varying from musically untrained to professional. On fast-to-slow (FS) trials the tune started at a very fast tempo and slowed until the listener identified it. Slow-to-fast (SF) trials started slow and accelerated. Tunes either retained their natural rhythms or were stylized isochronous versions. Increased expertise led to better performance for both FS and SF thresholds (r = .45). …

Spiritual Assessment And Care Plan Development In A Long Term Care Facility, Eugene J. Neff Jan 1998

Spiritual Assessment And Care Plan Development In A Long Term Care Facility, Eugene J. Neff

Theses

A healthy spirituality in the long term care resident is an important factor in holistic care. A review of literature coupled with the knowledge and experience of the author, an ordained clergy person with pastoral care training, and experience in the long term care setting, has indicated a growing need to ensure that the long term care resident's spiritual needs are properly assessed. The results of that assessment must be incorporated into the care plan. Appropriate steps must be taken to respond to surfaced needs and reinforce the areas of spiritual strength.

The purpose of this thesis will be to …

The Reciprocal Effects Of Aging And The Ability To Choose And Wear Clothes Of One's Choice, Patricia A. Forde Jan 1998

The Reciprocal Effects Of Aging And The Ability To Choose And Wear Clothes Of One's Choice, Patricia A. Forde

Theses

As men and women age, their ability to successful perform the typical activities of daily living become limited because of physical disabilities associated with the aging process. The ability to perform one of these activities, dressing oneself without assistance, has been demonstrated to be especially vulnerable to age-related physical disabilities.

The inability to dress oneself has been demonstrated to have a negative impact on the independence, sociability and self-esteem of older adults, and is linked to the reliance on personal care assistance, an extra financial burden for the elderly person or a public expense.

Adaptive clothing designed to accommodate for …

The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer Jan 1998

The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer

Theses

This study examines previous and forthcoming knowledge of ancient medicinal remedies and solutions which provide and enable]e the acquisition of better and safer health care. Because of political reasons which appear to be dominant over all others, this inherent knowledge continues to seemingly remain obscure within the medical world and within our society. Continued education plays a vital role in the assessment of health care today because statistics stress that too many Eves are daily being snuffed out because of careless and improper drug administration and insidious drug reactions which follow thereafter. As a result, many people are striving to …

Aquatic Exercise : Program Profile And Perceived Benefits On People With Arthritis, Sara Di Trolio

Honors Capstones

The main focus of this project was to research the program profiles and perceived benefits on people with arthritis in aquatic exercise programs. Fifty-five participants in aquatic exercise classes were asked to respond to a questionnaire and comparisons were made between arthritic and non-arthritic groups. A majority of the individuals in the aquatic exercise program reported having arthritis. Approximately half of the respondents reported having participated in the program for more than one year. More than half of the individuals reported exercising three to four times per week. Two of the program sites employed certified aquatic instructors. All four of …

Student Perceptions Of Aging And Disability As Influenced By Service Learning, David Greene Jan 1998

Student Perceptions Of Aging And Disability As Influenced By Service Learning, David Greene

Intergenerational

This study examined the effects of two community service learning experiences on student perceptions of aging in a nursing home and on community-based living with a disability. According to content analysis of student narratives, service learning resulted in increased student awareness of issues pertinent to the students' companions in both settings. This heightened awareness was discussed in terms of the capacity for empathy. While both experiences were effective. there were differences in student responses to the two service learning settings. This suggests a uniqueness in benefit from different settings for service learning. Instructors should design community placements accordingly being cognizant …
