School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We analyzed the relationship between new ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (NEE) and irradiance (as photosynthetic photon flux density of PPFD), using published and unpublished data that have been collected during midgrowing season for carbon balance studies at seven peatlands in North America and Europe. NEE measurements included both eddy-correlation tower and clear, static chamber methods, which gave very similar results. Data were analyzed by site, as aggregated data set for all peatland type (bog, poor fen, rich fen, and all fens) and as a single aggregated data set for all peatlands. In all cases, a fit with a rectangular …

Hunting And Exposure: Estimating Risk And Future Use At Nuclear Production Sites, Jessica Sanchez, Joanna Burger

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

The authors advocate specific criteria for informed decisions about the future use - of contaminated nuclear sites. They also compare the implications of official recommendations for one site with results from a study.

The Return Of Sam Brannan To Hawaii, Riley Moffat Mar 1998

The Return Of Sam Brannan To Hawaii, Riley Moffat

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

We have all heard the story of Sam Brannan and how he led a party of Latter-day Saints from New York to California aboard the ship Brooklyn around Cape Horn in 1846. As part of that journey they stopped for awhile in Honolulu to resupply the ship. This journey was highlighted again as part of the sesquicentennial celebration of the pioneer trek west.

What I was not aware of was that Sam Brannan later returned to Hawaii under quite different circumstances.

"...To Produce The Highest Type Of Manhood And Womanhood": The Ontario Housing Act, 1919, And A New Suburban Ideal, Jason Gilliland, Matt Sendbuehler Mar 1998

"...To Produce The Highest Type Of Manhood And Womanhood": The Ontario Housing Act, 1919, And A New Suburban Ideal, Jason Gilliland, Matt Sendbuehler

Geography & Environment Publications

While most scholars generally focus on the failings of the post-WWI Federal-Provincial housing scheme in Canada, we contend that it had far-reaching implications for three major facets of urbanism: housing policy, town planning, and residential architecture. We do so primarily through an examination of the impacts of the Ontario Housing Act, 1919, in the context of contemporary visions of ideal residential environments.

In the 1920s, a major reconceptualization of planning and architecture generated a new ideology of house, home and city which intended to remake existing cities and to create new, efficient and healthy settlements. The ideal city featured increasingly …

Claims On Housing Space In Nineteenth-Century Montreal, Jason Gilliland, Sherry H. Olsen Mar 1998

Claims On Housing Space In Nineteenth-Century Montreal, Jason Gilliland, Sherry H. Olsen

Geography & Environment Publications

Space per person is a fundamental measure of equity in an urban society. From small samples of the Montreal population over the years 1861-1901, we infer substantial improvement in the average dwelling space available per person, but an extreme and persistent inequity in the distribution among households. The housing market remained polarised in terms of class and cultural identity. As crowding diminished, urban density increased, and the problem of working-class housing became, increasingly, one of collective rather than individual space. Families, through networks of kinship and neighbouring, found new ways to exert some control over vital urban micro-spaces. In a …

No. 06: Trading Places: Cross-Border Traders And The South African Informal Sector, Sally Pederby, Jonathan Crush Mar 1998

No. 06: Trading Places: Cross-Border Traders And The South African Informal Sector, Sally Pederby, Jonathan Crush

Southern African Migration Programme

Non-South African street traders are often portrayed in the South African media as “illegal”, ill-educated, new arrivals who take opportunities from South Africans and money from the country. The findings of this study challenge some of the basic myths about non-South African street traders and their activities.

The study also makes policy recommendations for changes in both immigration and customs policy on informal cross-border trade. The study examines the participation of non-South African street traders in regional cross-border trade and its implications for customs and immigration policy.

The study focuses on traders in the handicraft and curio sector, as they …

Notes On Polyphylla Harris With A Description Of A New Species. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae), Delbert A. La Rue

Insecta Mundi

Polyphylla aeolus La Rue, new species, is described from the Kelso Sand Dunes, Mojave Desert, San Bernardino County, California, U.S.A. Illustrations of dorsal habitus, significant morphological details, and adult genitalic forms are provided. A description of the type locality including geographical and ecological parameters is presented. Taxonomic problems within the genus and limitations of recently proposed methods of species identification are discussed. A modified key is provided to distinguish the new species.

The heretofore undescribed females of Polyphylla anteronivea Hardy, P. rnescalerensis Young, P. nubila Van Dyke, and P. pottsorum Hardy, are described. The larval host of P. erratica Hardy …
