Intercultural Training For Global Organisations, Irene Matin Rubio Jul 1998

Intercultural Training For Global Organisations, Irene Matin Rubio

IIMB Management Review

Liberalisation has seen many economies, especially in Asia, opening their hitherto sheltered domestic markets to global competition and providing greater opportunities to trade and foreign investment. The spinoffs of liberalisation bring in new implications, opportunities and challenges for the governments as well as the organisations involved. Round Table features some of the issues discussed in the conference on 'Managing Economic Liberalisation in South Asia : Directions for the 21st Century' held in Chennai, India, from August 10 -13. Selvarajah examines the realignment of economies towards globalisation as a development of regionalism. The shift in economic forces away from multilateral arrangements …

"The Best Laid Schemes . . . ": Land-Use Planning And Historic Preservation In Cambodia, William Chapman Jul 1998

"The Best Laid Schemes . . . ": Land-Use Planning And Historic Preservation In Cambodia, William Chapman

Washington International Law Journal

This Article examines existing land use laws and proposed historic preservation-related legislation in Cambodia and offers a critical appraisal of their applicability and hopes for success. Cambodia is a small country that faces (and has faced) numerous political and economic difficulties. It possesses a rich architectural and archaeological heritage that is threatened by proposed land-use changes and future development. Initiated primarily by outsiders, principally planners and archaeologists from Europe and the United States, Cambodia's newly formulated land-use laws attempt to take irreplaceable cultural resources into account. However, plans such as those proposed by UNESCO and consultants to the government appear …

Infrastructure Services And Financing In Chinese Cities, Kam Wing Chan Jul 1998

Infrastructure Services And Financing In Chinese Cities, Kam Wing Chan

Washington International Law Journal

As urbanization accelerates and cities expand their role in the Chinese economy, expensive urban infrastructural facilities and financing have become major policy issues. Drawing on fieldwork in five cities in 1994 as well as national statistics, this Article analyzes the provision of urban infrastructure services and financing. As marketization proceeds, an overhaul of the urban public finance system, along with a redefinition of the role of local government in China, is urgently required.

The Mentawai Of Siberut Island, Indonesia: A Case Study Of Indigenous Land Use And Conservation Areas, Stacy Crevello Jul 1998

The Mentawai Of Siberut Island, Indonesia: A Case Study Of Indigenous Land Use And Conservation Areas, Stacy Crevello

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Indonesia has been blessed with the second most ecologically diverse rain forests in the world. The Indonesian government has recognized the importance of preserving these natural resources as they are in jeopardy of extinction with wide spread logging in direct competition for forest resources. These forests are also home to most of Indonesia's 1.5 million indigenous people who rely on natural resources for survival.

This study analyzes the natural resource use and exploitation of the indigenous Mentawai of Siberut Island, Indonesia. The Mentawaians are atypical as they have historically practiced conservation by following strict taboos and "Adat", the customary law. …

Review Of Wallace Stegner: His Life And Work By Jackson J. Benson, Robert Thacker Jul 1998

Review Of Wallace Stegner: His Life And Work By Jackson J. Benson, Robert Thacker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

When he died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in April of 1993, Wallace Stegner left a list of eight writing projects he had yet to do pinned above his desk, awaiting his return. Noting this fact toward the end of this thorough biography, Benson writes that "Stegner's career as a novelist followed a pattern of lifelong growth, reaching its zenith near the end." He was, his biographer says, "simply, by far, the brightest man I've ever known," and ultimately Benson concludes that "Perhaps Wallace Stegner's greatest creation was himself-a good man who always did the best he could. …

Trains Through The Plains The Great Plains Landscape Of Victorian Women Travelers, Karen M. Morin Jul 1998

Trains Through The Plains The Great Plains Landscape Of Victorian Women Travelers, Karen M. Morin

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The young British novelist Iza Hardy, during her travels to America in 1881-83, anticipated the American West as terra incagnitae, a place completely beyond civilization. Like many other British tourists to America in the late nineteenth century, Hardy traveled extensively throughout the East Coast and South, and took a transcontinental journey to the Pacific Coast by train (Fig. O. Out of her American travels Hardy produced Between Two Oceans: Or, Sketches of American Travel (1884) and a book about Florida. Hardy's coverage of the western portion of her American journey followed the transect the railroad did, with chapters of …

The Reality Of Bytes: Regulating Economic Activity In The Age Of The Internet, Michael A. Geist Jul 1998

The Reality Of Bytes: Regulating Economic Activity In The Age Of The Internet, Michael A. Geist

Washington Law Review

By utilizing both a backward and forward looking perspective, this Article develops a model conducive to better understand the Internet's legal implications on economic regulation. The model is also intended to help legislators and regulators adapt their legal and regulatory frameworks to the Internet. This Article canvasses and builds upon the burgeoning development of Internet law. It suggests that the Internet's impact on economic regulation is best understood by classifying its effects into four categories, each of which requires a different regulatory response. It also considers potential solutions for adapting economic regulation to the Internet. This Article concludes that no …

Justice N.D Krishna Rao Memorial Lecture On Protection Of Human Rights: Judicial Obligation Or Judicial Activism, The Hon Justice Mr. A.S. Anand

National Law School Journal

The growth of judicial review is the inevitable response of the judiciary to ensure proper check on the exercise of public power. Growing awareness of the rights in the people; the trend of judicial scrutiny of every significant Governmental action and the readiness even of the executive to seek judicial determination of debatable or controversial issues, at times, may be, to avoid its accountability for the decision, have all resulted in the increasing significance of the rile of the judiciary. There is a general perception that the judiciary in this country has been active in expansion of the field of …

Land Law Subsystems? Urban Vietnam As A Case Study, John Gillespie Jul 1998

Land Law Subsystems? Urban Vietnam As A Case Study, John Gillespie

Washington International Law Journal

Throughout Vietnam's long history, the central elite and peripheral farming communities have been legally and culturally divided. This dichotomy was never as complete as the famous injunction that "the emperor's writ stops at the village gate" infers. Initially, during the period of French colonisation and more recently since the introduction of doi moi (renovation) economic reforms, central authorities have attempted to unify land management with universal normative law. This experiment has stimulated widespread non-compliance with land laws in urban centres; in some areas compliance is a fringe phenomenon. In this divided legal geography, pockets of non-compliance give the appearance of …

Knowledge: The New Republic, K L Chopra Jul 1998

Knowledge: The New Republic, K L Chopra

IIMB Management Review

As the societies of the world have progressed from the spoken to the written medium, to the audiovisual and finally to the electronic media for communication, civilisations have undergone enormous changes. With the IT revolution, coupled with an era of globalised economics and commerce, 'knowledge' power, as K L Chopra puts it, will increasingly dominate the governance, social and economic structure and lifestyle of a nation. In this Republic of Knowledge, the 'knowledge worker', 'knowledge engineering' and 'knowledge factories' will play a pivotal role in determining its health and wealth. However, it remains to be seen whether the new Republic …

The Efficacy Of Teaching Conflict Resolution, Joan E. Grigaitis Jul 1998

The Efficacy Of Teaching Conflict Resolution, Joan E. Grigaitis

Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of Conflict Resolution Programs in an elementary school. The question to be studied was whether incidents of disciplinary referrals would be reduced after implementing a Conflict Resolution Program. The entire student population of Simpson Elementary School for the academic years 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 served as subjects for this study. Disciplinary referrals were tallied for the students for the 1994-1995 academic year (i.e., the "control" group or prior to the Conflict Resolution Program). A Conflict Resolution Program was implemented coincident with the start of the 1995-1996 academic year. Disciplinary referrals were …
